2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor The parishioners of St. Francis extend our sympathies to the family of Loretta P. Koester, who was buried in our cemetery on Monday morning. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord. At the time I am writing this article for the bulletin, all the news and events that you will know about on Saturday evening and Sunday are unknown to me! Did our Teutopolis Wooden Shoes win their sectional title Thursday? Were our 8 th graders victorious on Thursday!? How is the dinner show on Friday and Saturday evenings? And how about the Finance Council meeting and Pastoral Council meeting on Thursday? We had the Anointing Service on Tuesday afternoon, and that went well. Saturday morning over 50 children are receiving the sacrament of reconciliation for the first time. We congratulate them and their parents. The big event, of course, was the accident on Friday afternoon, 10 February, as our high school basketball team, with their cheerleaders and all the staff were enroute to Lincoln Junior College in order to play Rockridge High School. How many times have you watched the film shot by the surveillance camera in the gas station, the tape that shows the bus tipping over and sliding? When we think of the possibilities, of the tragedy that could have happened, with the loss of multiple lives or victims maimed for life, we thank the Lord for protecting us and keeping our people safe. The passengers on the bus will remember this event for many years to come. In the midst of their trauma, may they also remember the people who reached out to them and assisted them. We pray for their continual healing, and we also pray for the driver of the van. You can go to our parish website and set up an appointment for the photo session for our new pictorial directory. That s what I did took 2 minutes! Please participate in this project. You know the frustration of looking for someone in the current directory and then realizing for whatever the reason(s) their photo is missing. 100% participation is wishful thinking. Let s try for 80% or 85% The Year of Grace Be perfect lovers. What a challenge! What a duty! The true identity of those loved by God is to be lovers. The duty is not to waste time and energy on cherishing hatred, vengeance, grudges and retaliation. Since we belong to Christ (Baptism makes this so), we are already holy (set apart) like God, we are on the way to being perfect (devoted to divine instruction) like God. How will I place no limits on love of neighbor-even if he or she does to me? How will I imitate God in being perfect? How will I be like God and love by doing? HIGH SCHOOL High School Bible Study has been an AWESOME gathering of people! Come join us in the Teen Center Wednesday nights 8:30 pm - 9:15 pm. This week, Matthew 6:24-34 has us taking a really hard look at "what is it you value?" and also, "What are you worried about?" We have Bibles or you can bring your own! All high school students are invited regardless of whether they go to religious ed classes or not. It's been a great experience! RCIA sessions continue on Monday nights. This week our topic is a Consistent Ethic of Life. It is one of the most challenging commands of the Gospel for believers. We should consider how well we fulfill this command of the Lord.

5 February 19, th Sunday in Ordinary Time page 5 MARCH FOR LIFE REFLECTIONS and THANKS From the group that traveled by van: The March for Life has always seemed like it would be a cool experience to me. Now that I have experienced it myself, I can say that it was something I won t forget. We went to Mass the morning of the March and headed to the rally. It felt really good to walk the streets of Washington DC with people who wanted to make a difference. I couldn t believe how many people came to stand up for what they believed in. The March for Life was a special event that I m so glad I could be a part of. Macy Vogt This was my second year attending the March for Life. This year was way different than last year s March because of the weather and crowd. But I still expected it to make the same difference in the world. We got into Washington DC early Friday morning and then went to St. Peter s Church for Mass with the Diocese of Springfield groups, then we went down to the rally. After the rally was over at about 1:30 we started the March. I would have to say this year was one of the years that I won t forget. Liz Kremer 40 DAYS FOR LIFE The spring campaign for 40 Days for Life is March 1 - April 9. Before Lent begins, let us plan how we might offer extra prayer and sacrifice for this important prayer effort to end legalized abortion and for a renewed reverence for all human life in our world. The Forget-Me-Not Café for 2017 will begin on February 28th at the Tuscan Hills Winery from noon - 3:00 pm. The Forget-Me-Not-Café is an opportunity to leave Alzheimer s and dementia behind and enjoy an outing with your loved one in an environment of support and understanding. Praying the rosary will begin at 6:00 pm followed by a 6:30 pm Mass. The 7:30 pm business meeting will be in the parish center. It is a time for each of us to draw closer to God as we prepare for his death & triumphant resurrection.. We accomplish this through prayer, fasting, & almsgiving. These are the three pillars of Lenten observance. We do these individually, but we can do these as a parish community as well. Just as we take on the Giving Tree project during Advent in preparation for Christ's birth, St. Francis Parish Council has approved a Lenten project in preparation for Easter. The Social Concerns Committee continues to be in close contact with Fr. Damien in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They have explained to us the continued needs of these orphaned boys entrusted to Fr. Damien's care. Your regular monthly donations to our Assisi for Africa mission project have helped tremendously! We have provided food, clothing, & shelter. Their needs; however, don't stop there. They need financial assistance with medications, counseling, & doctor visits. One of Fr. Damien's goals is that these boys learn a trade in order to become employable when they finish school. Another goal is to teach them how to work the land so that they will have the skills to grow their own food, with the hope of becoming self-sufficient one day. These goals, although basic, require additional funds. Funds that Fr. Damien does not have. It is our hope that you will search your heart & give generously during the holy season of Lent so that the hearts of our brothers in Africa will be equally full and forever linked to you, the parishioners here at St. Francis. There will be a special collection taken up on April 2 for this cause. You will also notice prayer cards at all church entrances featuring individual pictures of the boys from Africa. Please take a prayer card home with you, pray for this child, and add this prayer to your other daily prayers. We will recite this prayer at all weekend Masses during Lent. May Almighty God, who has given us so very much, reward you abundantly for your efforts to help the poorest of His children! Sewing Project Little Dresses for Africa is a registered non profit Christian organization began in 2008 by Rachel O'Neill from Brownstown Michigan. Donated dresses are sent through mission teams or mailed to designated communities in Africa where the clothing is then distributed to children through orphanages, schools and churches. St. Francis parish is inviting anyone willing to help with our Little Dresses for Africa sewing project to come to the Monastery Museum on Monday, February 20th from 10:00-4:00. You are welcome to come and go as your schedule allows. Lunch will be provided. Items needed are sewing machines, thread, scissors, lace or trim, 1/4 inch elastic and fabric (1 yard minimum). A container will be placed in the entrance of the rectory for anyone unable to come on February 20th but still wanting to make a donation of the needed items.
