2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 What am I doing for Lent this year? Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Jn. 12:24 You die to yourself when you keep Lent. Just what does it mean to die to yourself? It means saying no to yourself. It means reigning in those desires, wants, unthinking actions that we do everyday that chip away a strong, solid relationship with God. One of the most common practices of Lent is to give up something. When I was a child giving up candy was a big thing but now that I am older giving up doesn t seem to mean the same thing. Of course, if you are like a friend of mine who gave up buying any new clothes for six weeks giving up was a big deal. In her case, during those six weeks she was named Woman of the Year by her home town in Alabama. She was named Principal of the Year by the NCEA and she won an award for being an outstanding teacher of high school religion. Each of these awards came with a banquet, pictures and the usual celebration. She desperately wanted to buy some new clothes but made herself stick to her Lenten promise. She said that Lent was one of the most difficult but most rewarding in her spiritual journey. She had died to herself many times over. Does anyone need to know what I give up? My brother and I have the same discussion every Lent. One thing he does is give up drinking alcohol. That is a big thing because wining and dining clients is a big part of his job. Because he doesn t want to embarrass his client he will have a beer (one beer) at a meal so that his client isn t uncomfortable drinking alone. I tell him that if his client wonders why he isn t drinking a simple response of I don t really care to tonight or something (he is a lawyer and can make words work for him) should be sufficient to put his client at ease. He believes it is more important for him to be sensitive to his client s feelings than to forgo the drink. My response is: what a witness to someone that you stand up for what you believe. You don t lord it over them but say why you do or don t do something shows them that you are serious about becoming a better person in your faith. What do you think? What will you give up this Lent? Women at Work Thursday, March 10th, the Effingham Deanery Council of Catholic Women will gather for their Spring meeting at St. Mary s parish in St. Elmo beginning with Mass at 6 pm. Be a friend and bring a friend to share in our faith and commitment to serve others. Lenten Regulations 1. Abstinence Everyone 14 years of age and over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Fast Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 is required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is permitted. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength may be taken according to each person s needs, but together these two should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids (including milk and fruit juices) are allowed. 3. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. Help Needed! We are in need of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion for the 12:10 pm Mass and the 7:00 pm Mass on Ash Wednesday, March 9th. Please come to the sacristy before Mass and see where you are needed. Thank you for your help! Please Note Mass times on Ash Wednesday, March 9th will be 6:00 am, 12:10 and 7:00 pm. There will be a prayer service with distribution of ashes for the grade school children at 8:05 am. Mass times will be changed during Lent. The early morning weekday Mass will start at 6:15 am instead of 6:30 am Monday thru Friday starting Thursday, March 10th. There will be a 12:10 pm Mass on Monday and Thursday during Lent starting on March 10th. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday there will be a regularly scheduled Mass at 8:05 am. Stations of the Cross Stations of the Cross will be every Friday evening at 7:00 pm during Lent and will hold a different view or theme each week. 4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 Family Corner Lent is a time for learning about giving to those in need. There are many ways that children become compassionate people. One of them is through early lessons on giving alms. Here is a simple idea for the family. On Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, put a clean, recycled jar on the kitchen table. Make a special label to cover and identify the jar. It might be: Help the Poor, Feed the Hungry, Pennies for Peace, etc. Encourage every family member to put a coin in the jar each day. Help the children count up the money at the end of Holy Week. Put the donation in an appropriate envelope and submit it with your Easter Sunday collection money or give it to Catholic Charities or a favorite charity of choice. As with most values, the earlier learned the better. The value of self-denial is no exception. Lent provides an excellent opportunity to teach children the necessity of self-denial in our permissive society. Learning about the spirit of fasting can include restriction of luxuries such as having dinner in a restaurant, watching television, playing computer games, shopping or going out with friends. A good spring cleaning can help children evaluate the excesses in their lives. They can be encouraged to give away clothing, toys, games or other possessions to those in need. They can also be encouraged to give time to the Lord by volunteering their services. Volunteering at home is not a bad idea either. It doesn t always have to be outside the home. Pre-Lenten Parish Mission March 7-9 from 7-8 each evening at Sacred Heart Church in Effingham. Fr. Larry Gillick, a blind, Jesuit priest, will discuss Sacra-Mental Living. The Vatican International Exhibit of Eucharistic Miracles of the World will be on exhibit in the Sacred Heart Parish Center on March 6 9am-3pm; March 7, 8 & 9 5:30pm-7pm & 8pm-9pm. 5 March 6, 2011 Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time page 5 Letter from the Grade School Religion Office Dear Parents, Grandparents, other parishioners, Even though this is the 3rd quarter of religion school year and Spring is right around the corner, the grade school religion office has not yet filled its roster of substitute catechists for this year. We are still in need of substitute (occasional) religion teachers for the classrooms 1 to 4 for Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Especially during these past Winter months, it has been very difficult to staff classrooms with substitutes when the regular catechist calls in sick, or has a sick child, or has another emergency. One day Sister Ann needed to look for 6 substitutes other days 4 substitutes. Where does she turn? Right now we need persons, who have a free day or free hour (8:00-8:45) on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, to call in a week or a month ahead of time and let us know that day.. The substitute will be given plenty of help naming the lesson to be covered, along with the textbook and directions; a Bible from which to read Bible stories; a class list of names of children in the classroom and an activity to do. Also, perhaps you could share one thing you liked about your religious education classes when you were their age. You would be surprised what a good catechist you could turn out to be and how much you would enjoy your effort and the children s response. Ask any of the present catechists and Mass supervisors and helpers! Call TODAY! Counting on your response Religious Education Grade School Office Religious Education representatives on the Parish Council Prayer, Fasting and Mercy One of the greatest preachers of the early Church explains the key penitential practices of Lent prayer, fasting, and almsgiving or mercy. St. Peter Chrysologus was the bishop of Ravenna, Italy in the middle of the 5th century. His sermons were so inspiring that he was given the title Chrysologus (Greek for Golden-worded) and was eventually declared a Doctor of the Church. There are three things, my brethren, by which faith stands firm, devotion remains constant, and virtue endures. They are prayer, fasting and mercy. Prayer knocks at the door, fasting obtains, mercy receives. Prayer, mercy and fasting: these three are one, and they give life to each other. Fasting is the soul of prayer, mercy is the lifeblood of fasting. Let no one try to separate them; they cannot be separated. If you have only one of them or not all together, you have nothing. So if you pray, fast; if you fast, show mercy; if you want your petition to be heard, hear the petition of others. If you do not close your ear to others, you open God s ear to yourself. When you fast, see the fasting of others. If you want God to know that your are hungry, know that another is hungry. If you hope for mercy, show mercy. If you look for kindness, show kindness. If you want to receive, give. If you ask for yourself what you deny to others, your asking is a mockery. Let this be the pattern for all men when they practice mercy: show mercy to others in the same way, with the same generosity, with the same promptness, as you want others to show mercy to you. Therefore, let prayer, mercy and fasting be one single plea to God on our behalf, one speech in our defense, a threefold united prayer in our favor. Taken from St. Mary s in Metamora parish bulletin. Adult Catholics who have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation and have a desire to be confirmed, please contact Sr. Pierre Bishop Paprocki will confirm adult Catholics on Pentecost Sunday, June 12 at the cathedral in Springfield. Please keep her in prayer as her journey intensifies. We meet in the basement of St. Rose in Montrose following the 9:00 a.m. mass. Anyone interested or curious regarding teachings of the Catholic Church is welcome. This week s topic: Sacramental Adult Enrichment opportunity during Lent is presented by Fr. Ted Bracco, OFM. The topic is: An Historical & Spiritual Look at the Passion & Death of Jesus. The presentation is to be held on Tuesdays from 7:00-9:00 at St. Anthony Parish Center beginning March 8 to April 19. Update on Recycling If you did not read the article about our recycling program in the paper, we would like to let you know that our recycling is now going to single stream type of collecting. What this consists of is collecting plastic in one large container. No separation of your plastic recyclables will be needed. The tin cans must be kept separate and should be placed in the boxes in the same large container as the plastics. However, lids still need to be removed and discarded and everything must be clean and recyclable. This may not look as neat and appealing when mixing everything together, but it will be less labor intensive and require less draws, saving on the cost to keep our program going. Continue placing your cardboard in the cardboard container, and place all aluminum cans in the paper depot. Also, part of the cost of the recycling is hoped to be recovered from donations. A drop safe is being installed on the west side of the paper barn in hopes to recover the expense incurred by the collecting of the recyclables.
