2 St Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 Meditations for Sunday, January 25th Mark 1:14-20 Is it really true that all Jesus had to say was Follow me for Simon and Andrew to drop everything? Or that just a few moments later, James and John would do the same thing? Probably not Today s Gospel is a kind of summary passage that introduces us to Jesus first disciples It tells us that Jesus won them over, but a lot of the details of how he did it are left unsaid We can be sure that Jesus knew exactly what to say He knew how to win men and women to him and to his Father It was a combination of love, truth, leadership, purity, and passion While we may lack Jesus holiness or his talent, we are still called to evangelize (Matthew 28:19) So here are some steps that might help us spread the good news: First, have a passion for people Jesus once said that he would leave ninety-nine faithful sheep in order to find one lost sheep Jesus values every soul He wants everyone to come to heaven And that kind of passion made him effective Second, pray Make a list of people you know who are lukewarm in their faith or who have left the church altogether Pray for them every day, asking the Holy Spirit to draw them home by grace Believe that the Spirit will work, and trust that he will Third, prepare Try to write down what you would say to someone should the opportunity arise But before you write, ask the Spirit to help you formulate your thoughts Ask him, too, to help you overcome any fear or rejection Hundreds of thousands of people die every week, and many of them are not ready to face judgement Some assume that heaven is a foregone conclusion, while others simply don t want to have anything to do with God So get to work! If we can help to bring just one person back to the Lord this year, we will be doing great Lord, give me a spirit of evangelism Help me to overcome fear and shyness And please move in the people I am praying for THE WORD AMONG US As Promised last week, more information on Why Catholic? is here You did not need to be a part of the last session to join a Why Catholic? 4 St Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 Religious Education News Grade 2 Baptismal information sheet (last page in packet) should be returned this week Thank you Grade 5A and Grade 5B will be taking the diocesan religious education test this week Grade 6 We are needing 2 more helpers for the Sunday Pre/K religion program for the months of Feb, Mar, and April Thank you for offering to help Parish Council Nominations It is that time of year again to accept nominations of parishioners to serve a three-year term on the Parish Council Theresa Funneman, Jim Quatman and Marita Weber have served the parish for three years and their terms have now expired Therefore, we will be voting for 1 man and 2 women to fill these openings All parishioners 18 years of age and older are invited to nominate parishioners You can nominate people by sending the name/s to Fr Austin, PO Box 730, or by dropping them off at the parish office, or by placing them in the collection basket You may also nominate yourself Please include the phone number or address of the person/s you nominate, in case there are two people in the parish with the same name Deadline to turn in nominations is February 1st Election will be held the third weekend in February How Beautiful! Junior High Dance February 6 at the TGS gym Permission slips are available at the entrance of church or online! Ice Skate with us! Jr High & High School students are invited to an ice skating trip at U of I at Champaign on February 21 Vans will leave the parking lot at 11:45 am We ll skate from 1:30 4 & then attend Mass at St John s/newman Center We ll have pizza & tour the Newman & be home by 9 pm It will be an awesome day! Cost for the trip is just $900 Permission slips are available at the entrance of church or online! Girls~ Celebrate February with a Date with DAD! CHWC invites YOU to dance the night away with your dad on February 7 at the Grade School Gym from 7 9 pm We ll have dancing, snacks, games, crafts & a chance to get your picture taken with Dad Cost of the event is $15 per couple for advance tickets or $20 at the door Additional daughter tickets are just $5 each!
