2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From Father Ed I m so glad we had this time together, just to have a laugh and sing a song Does anyone remember those words from the old Carol Burnett song at the end of her show? The song has been ringing in my ears these past weeks as the beginning of July beckons me back to Chicago. I m feeling all kinds of emotions these days, and more than anything I am absolutely filled with gratitude. THANK YOU, Teutopolis, for planting that T-Town spirit inside of me these past 7 months, and I promise you that I will continue to raise that T-Town spirit up as I go forth from here. You know me by now, so you know that I love a new adventure, and even though I am going back to where I came from, it definitely feels like a new adventure, because I have been changed. And quite frankly, I want you to know that I am really sad to leave here! But like I ve learned over and over again in my life, the work of grief is to create a cherishable memory and there is a LOT to cherish from these past months. Speaking of adventures, I gotta tell you that my experience of Catholic Heart Work Camp out in Denver was really over the top! As I said in my reflection, it was a wonderfully new and refreshing experience of the future of the Church. actually not the future but the present! And our T-Town people were a huge success story, as I am sure they are every year. You know all those jobs that you want your kids to do around the house and they complain about doing?? Well they did them with gusto in Denver! Every time there was a project that needed to be done at any of the 52 work sites, you could be sure that someone from the T- Town group was the first to volunteer. I am so proud of our Church! And speaking of our Church, now is the time for YOU to raise that T-Town spirit up" and volunteer for ministry. We need Readers and Sacristans and Altar Servers and all the rest of the liturgical ministries. Please know that you are INVITED and NEEDED. It s easy and it keeps us all involved please sign up! Hopefully I ll see you this coming week, although I m sure it ll be a bit of a whirlwind I m leaving for good" next Sunday, July 3rd, but like a bad penny I ll be back from time to time. Proverbs 29:18 How often when faced with a task to do, a situation to resolve, or an event to plan do we begin with action steps. We make our to-do list until someone asks why we are doing this or what we hope to accomplish or what values we want to uphold. Such questions call us to tap into that contemplative space out of which vision grows into articulation and gives meaning, purpose, and passion to action. WE become the vision. Making peace is no different. Peace will come when we find in contemplation a vision for peace, a vision that gives meaning, purpose and passion to peace actions. To do peace, we must become peace. PROLIFE ACTION NEEDED - Please contact Governor Rauner to ask him to veto S.B. 1564, a pro-abortion bill that has already passed the Illinois House and Senate and is awaiting the governor's signature. According to Americans United for Life (AUL), this bill would dramatically reduce Illinois conscience protections for health care providers and pro-life pregnancy centers. Pro-life pregnancy centers (like the Family Life Center) would have to, at minimum, provide in writing a list of providers they reasonably believe offer abortion. AUL states that the bill will be forcing pregnancy centers to advertise for abortion clinics. LifeSiteNews.com states the bill would require all medical providers in the state to refer for abortions and counsel clients as to the benefits of abortion. Call the Governor's office in Springfield at (217) or in Chicago at (312) and respectfully ask him to veto Senate Bill 1564 and House Bill 5576, which forces insurance companies to pay for abortion drugs like Plan B and Ella. Beckwith, professor of Church-State Studies at Baylor University, will be given on Sunday, July 3, after the l0:00 Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Springfield. He states The challenge of religious liberty today is the result of a general skepticism about the reasonableness of faith itself. This is why we need to be prepared not only to offer legal, historical, and constitutional arguments in our defense of religious liberty, but also to carefully explain why our beliefs are reasonable More information may be found online at pdf.html. Joleen is the daughter of Joseph and Carleen Deters. Congratulations, Joleen! We all are stewards of God s creation, but there is someone that really is a steward of God s creation. That is my dad, a farmer. Farmers are stewards of God s creation because they care about more than one thing. They care about their family, their farm, and their neighbors. Why are farmers stewards of God s creation? They watch over the land, care for animals, communities, and their families. Watching over their families and farms is very important. It takes dedication and strength to watch over their farm and family. But they can do it. They do this by never harming anything and always being patient. This is just one way that farmers are stewards of the Lord s Creation. Farmers, they farm the land. That is their job and no one else does it better. Farming shows that they are stewards of God s creation because they care for the Lord s beautiful world and respect everything in it. Also, farmers are always there to help their friends or neighbors that are in need. If they are sick or injured they are always there ready to help. Most importantly, farmers take care of the environment that God created. They take care of the land by watching over it and farming the land. They plant fields, feed animals, and watch over their livestock. Being a steward of God s creation takes strength, honesty, and guts. St. Francis Church Picnic--Sunday, July 10, 2016 Chicken and ham dinners will be served 11:00 am to 7:00 pm at Teutopolis Grade School Auditorium. REMINDER: Our picnic can only be a success if we all work together. We are counting on everyone to work their shift. If you have a conflict with your scheduled shift/time, please change with someone else, or at least please call the chairman of your stand. Parents, please remind your children to work their shift and to look for their names on the Monday morning duties as well. Items needed for the Picnic: Cakes and Pies: All ladies of the parish are asked to donate 2 pies and/or cakes for the picnic - cake boxes are at all entrances of the church. Please label the cake box with the type of pie/cake. They can be dropped off at the entrance to TGS gym beginning at 7:30 am on Sunday, July 10. There will be workers at the west auditorium door who will carry them to the cake/pie room. We are also accepting low sugar or sugar free desserts - please be sure to label it accordingly. Ice Cream Buckets: Ice cream buckets and lids are also needed. Please bring them to St. Clare Hall by July 1. Mystery Boxes: Please label all mystery boxes (girl, boy, man or lady) and mark it with a price. Children s mystery boxes sell the best with the price range of 25 to 50 cents. Fancy Work/Country Crafts: Donations of fancy work, crafts, baked goods, jellies, outdoor plants and bulbs are appreciated! Please securely wrap and label all baked items. They may be brought to the stand the day of the picnic. Forget-Me-Not Café will take place Tuesday, June 28th, from 12:00-2:00 pm at Tuscan Hills Winery. Forget-Me- Not Café is for individuals with early to middle stages of dementia and their spouse or other family caregivers. Important Update about Teutopolis Recycling Site Due to circumstances beyond our control, beginning July 1, 2016 the Teutopolis Recycling Program will no longer be accepting CARDBOARD or STEEL (soup/vegetable) CANS. Chase s Cardboard Recycling is going out of business on June 30. We are still accepting recyclable plastics in the dumpster. Aluminum cans, newspaper and plastic WalMart bags inside the Paper Depot building. Please do not bring cardboard and/or steel cans to the site after June 30. Baby Bottle Project Please return your baby bottle with your donation to the display in front of Mary s altar. After this weekend, bottles with donations may be brought to the church office during regular hours, or to the Family Life Center, 605 Eden Ave, Effingham. Empty bottles may be placed at church entrances. Thank you for your generosity in this pro-life effort! Next Baptism Prep Date: Thursday, July 7, 7:00 pm, St. Clare Hall. A class is required every five years before having your baby baptized. Next FOCCUS Date: Saturday, July 9, 5:30 pm, St. Clare Hall. 6 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 6 Congratulations to Liz Kremer for receiving the Our Lady of Good Counsel Women of Distinction Award in Springfield on Saturday, June 18. For the past 6 years the Springfield Diocesan Council of Catholic Women honor women from each parish who actively live their Catholic faith, display their spirituality and share their time and talents by doing acts of service and leadership toward their parish and community. At our March CCW meeting, Liz was nominated and selected as the recipient from St. Francis Parish. Liz has been going on the March for Life for the past 34 years, serving as the bus captain for 20 of those years. She also volunteers at the Family Life Center Rummage Sale and various fundraisers for Catholic Charities and CHWC. A member of the Social Concerns Committee and an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist at church, these are just a few of the ways she shares her time and talent. She definitely is worthy of this award. Liz, her mom and members of her family, along with CCW President Chris Mette, attended the Mass at the Cathedral and luncheon in Springfield on Saturday, June 18. Congratulations Liz! Liz Kremer and Bishop Thomas John Paprocki The Divine Mercy Image will be at Sacred Heart Church today, June 26, until Sunday, July 10. The Lord has promised through St. Faustina many graces for those who gaze upon the image while reciting the prayer, Jesus, I trust in you. This is a particularly special image of the Divine Mercy, as it is the one that is on pilgrimage in our churches throughout the diocese. This image will be coming to St. Francis Church on October 2 through 16. Galatians 3:28 When I worked as a cashier back in college, I ll admit that customers were not always my favorite part of the job. But then, as a customer, how often do I fight annoyance with a cashier or receptionist? Too often. As a teacher, I wanted to blame parents for education s ills. As a parent of students, I can rant about the schools. Working in a parish, I was tempted to wonder, What is wrong with the people out there? Sitting in the pew now, I can always find fault, if I m not careful, with what s going on around me. In other words, division in this world is real. And I can t honestly deny my own contribution to it. But it doesn t have to be that way. Grounded in Christ, I can see another path. Paul reminds me that in my baptism, I take on another view that reaches far beyond my own limited vision and self-regard. Drawing on grace now, all around me and in the journeys of others, I can see Christ. Loving Jesus, bind me closer to others in you. LIVING FAITH Amy Welborn
