Right to Life Sunday Our church will be celebrating the Right to Life Sunday on October 6 th at the 8:30 Mass. We will have the Young at Heart people, 70 and older, and the babies born this year.

2 Right to Life Sunday Our church will be celebrating the Right to Life Sunday on October 6 th at the 8:30 Mass. We will have the Young at Heart people, 70 and older, and the babies born this year. They will sit up in the front of church: Yound at Heart on the right side, and the babies on the left side. After Mass we will have refreshements in the basement. Everyone is invited to come. ****We are asking the ladies of the parish to bring cookies, sweet breads, or tolls for our Right to Life Sunday. Scripture Study has returned this fall for the third year. Morning and evening sessions are being offered. The first course The Bible Timeline, The Great Adventure, is the study of the Old Testament which tells the Bible in order from Creation to the time of the Church. It is an excellent course to begin to learn and understand Scripture. It will be offered on Tuesday mornings at 9:30am, beginning September 17, in the St. Anthony Parish Center, and on Thursday evenings, at 6:30pm, beginning September 19, at St. Anthony High School. The second course ACTS: The Spread of the Kingdom will be held on Thursday mornings at 9:30am, in the St. Anthony Parish Center, and at 6:30pm at St. Anthony High School, both starting on September 19. You may choose to attend either course, although the Old Testament is a logical place to start on your spiritual journey. You may register by notifying the parish office, either at St. Anthony or Sacred Heart Courses will run for 26 and 20 weeks respectfully. A donation of $40.00 is suggested to assist in defraying the cost of the materials. Please invite your spouse, family member, or friend to come join the journey. 3 Gruen VonBehrens Cancer Benefit A benefit is being held for Gruen VonBehrens on September 28, 2013 at the Effingham Elk s Lodge. Gruen and his family are members of St. Anthony Church and lifetime residents of Stewardson. The benefit will include a free will donation for food that is being served from 3-8 pm. There will also be silent and live auctions, 50/50 Raffles, music from 9pm- 12am, and more. We are in need of desserts the day of the event. If you would like to donate desserts you can drop them off on Friday, September 27, 2013 during parish office hours at St. Anthony parish office or the Effingham Elks Lodge. You can also drop off donations on Saturday at the Effingham Elks Lodge or St. Mary s church in Shumway between 8am -11am. Any questions please contact Christy Brown. Town Hall Meeting follow-up Discussion- Tuesday, September 24 at 7 pm in the church basement. All parishioners are welcome to attend. Parish Council Meeting Tuesday, October 8 at 7 pm. September 21 & Reflection for this weekend: God is so patient in His mercy! In our Gospel reading Jesus was judged for eating with sinners. He then used the image of a man who had lost a sheep, a woman who had lost a coin, and then the parable of the prodigal son to explain why he did it. We can see by the end of those parables that God respects our free will but at the same time is actively seeking our return when we choose to go away from Him. The joy at our return is also very evident. Where have I turned away from God and put something else ahead of Him? The first reading gives the image of an angry God who seems to be very quick to execute justice. At the same time it seems odd that he would bother to warn Moses or talk to Him about it. Let me alone, then, that my wrath may blaze up against them to consume them. Then I will make of you a great nation. Why does God care what Moses thinks? It seems to me that God is treating Moses as a partner here. He is drawing him in through conversation. Moses suddenly becomes an intercessor or mediator for the Israelites. This fits completely with his role as a priest. A mediator is meant to stand in the breach between God and humanity. In this way God even partners with humanity for the sake of our own salvation. This becomes another image of the Christ and His role as our savior/mediator. We can then see that God has the patience to spend all of history working out our salvation even though we often don t care or have a clue. God respects our free will even while putting everything possible in action toward our salvation. May we respond to His limitless merciful grace and turn to Him with our whole heart! Priest Convocation: This week from Monday thru Wednesday we have our annual priest convocation. This is a time for the priests of our diocese to get together and to work on a kind of continuing education. The focus will be on renewal and transformation of the priest. Those who care for others need to find ways to take care of themselves. Please pray for our priests during this convocation that we may have good healthy leaders. Because of the convocation we will not have Masses at either Effingham parish Tuesday or Wednesday. Squires: Last Sunday the Squires of St. Nicholas circle 5651 sponsored a Blue Mass at 5:30 Sunday evening at Sacred Heart. The Squires are associated with the Knights of Columbus Council 665 of Effingham. It is a group of boys under 18 who want to be active in a role similar to the Knights of Columbus. A Blue Mass is a Mass offered in prayerful support and in honor of our protective services, e.g. firefighters and police. Thanks again to all of the firefighters and police of our area who often put their own life aside for the sake of our protection. May God bless them and keep them safe. If you know of a family member, a neighbor, a friend or someone who is interested in learning more about the Catholicism, please encourage them to enquire. To register, or for more information please call the parish office The Shumway Union Church Service will be held on September 22 this year at 10:30 in Plum Park. All parishioners are invited to attend. A catered noon meal will be served right after the services. Prices for the meal is $7.00 for adults and $3.50 for children under the age of 10. We would like to see our Parish well represented. Please contact Marcella or Don Antrim for advance tickets or tickets will also be available at the door. Marcella and Don's phone number is or at onthehill@consolidated.net. TMIY (That Man Is You) The program addresses the pressures and temptations that men face in our modern culture. TMIY seeks to inform men who will be capable of transforming homes and society. Each Friday morning at 5:45 we start with breakfast, then have a DVD presentation, small group discussions and conclude at 7:30. All men are invited, even if you did not participated in session one. Last year we had an average attendance of 70 men each week. We d like to double that this year. Effingham Knights of Columbus Upcoming Events The Effingham Knights of Columbus FAMILY PICNIC for members and prospective members is on September 15 and starts at 11:30 with lunch at noon. There is food, refreshments and fun for the whole family. If you know of a fellow Knight and his family who has not taken the opportunity to make this event, be sure to bring them with you or if you know of a prospective Knight, bring him and his family and show them some Fraternal Hospitality! THE ANNUAL KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INTELLECTUAL DISABILITES FUND DRIVE AND BETTER KNOWN AS THE TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE WILL BE ON SEPTEMBER 20 AND 21. This event involves a number of volunteers either collecting donations or counting money. In addition to Knights and their families, anyone who is interested in helping can volunteer. If you would like to help, please give Greg Koester ( ), Tim Faber ( ) or Art Geen ( ) a call. A number of students need service hours for school and while they cannot collect on the streets or by themselves, this would be an great opportunity for the kids to get some service hours and spend time with mom, dad, older relative or older friend helping collect donations at area businesses or counting money back at the Hall. The 2 days are broken down into 2 hour shifts per site and after turning in the donations, there are snacks and refreshments for volunteers. Fourth Degree Assembly 214 of the Effingham Knights of Columbus will install the officers on Sunday September 29 after the Fifth Sunday Communion Mass at Sacred Heart (8:30 a.m. Mass) and Breakfast at the K of C Hall. Officers to be installed should be dressed in tuxedo. All K of C members, families and friends may attend so please call Greg Koester ( ) or Faithful Navigator Jerry Steppe ( ) so we have a good count for the breakfast. Fourth Degree Assembly 214 of the Effingham Knights of Columbus will also be hosting an Exemplification into the 4th Degree, the Patriotic Degree, on Saturday, October 5. All 3rd Degree members are encouraged to participate and complete your Degrees. The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to encourage active Catholic citizenship and foster the spirit of patriotism in members and the community at large. Some but not all of the 4 th Degree Knights participate in the Honor Guard Corps which are the Knights with the cape, chapeaux and swords you may see at certain masses and activities. We need to be sure that the attention we give to Washington does not make us forget about our local community. Pro-lifers need to give a local response to abortion by identifying where the killing is happening and who is doing it. If you can't stand for 30 minutes, feel free to bring a chair. Part 2: Choose a prayer hour outside the Effingham Planned Parenthood office on Thursday, October 24 from 9-5 and be a part of this peaceful witness. Choose your time slots and we ll join with other churches in our region to fill each of these 40 days with prayer that storms the heavens.
