2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor As you know, I spent almost all of the week of June 10 attending Provincial Council meetings in St. Louis. I won t bore you with the details of the meetings, but I thought you might be interested in knowing that I saw Br. Pauli while I was there. He seems to be in good spirits and still spends much of his day working on the lawn and the flower beds. He promised me that he would come for a visit but he was a little hazy on the details regarding when that might be. We had Wednesday afternoon free, so a couple of us drove over to Alton, IL, to visit the friars there. Among those we visited was Br. Claver whom many of you will remember from his time in this area. More recently, Br. Claver had been assigned to my home town of Ashland, WI; so I was able to see him a couple of times a year. His health has declined noticeably. While he s still able to get around on his own, his walking is slower and more tentative. Also, his mind seems to have lost some of its edge. Please remember him in your prayers. Seeing our friars in Alton was an unwelcome reminder of how much our Sacred Heart Province is aging. Projections are that, in the not too distant future, we will not have enough working friars to draw income to provide for the care of the retired friars. Please keep SHP in your prayers and if you could make an occasional donation, our provincial Treasurer will surely bless you. After St. Louis, I made a detour back to Nashville, TN, to pick up my last load of stuff. My brother, Br. Tom, is in the process of moving to a different house; and I didn t want my stuff to be in his way. Among the items I brought back were several musical instruments which have been passed on to the SFA music department. In case you missed the 6/17/12 issue of the Catholic Times, Bishop Paprocki had an article about appropriate dress for Sunday Mass. I agree with his assessment. While people don t seem to balk at dressing up to go to a fancy restaurant or event, fewer and fewer people seem willing to take time to dress up for the Lord s Supper. I am particularly bothered when liturgical ministers come forward to perform their ministry dressed in shorts and a T-shirt. Fr. Paul Habing visited at the friary early this past week. Paul and I were classmates at the high school seminary in Oak Brook, IL, back in the 60 s. It was sure good to see him again. Fr. John The 38th Annual Day of Prayer for Life sponsored by the Effingham County Right to Life will be this coming Wednesday, June 27th here at St. Francis Church. Opening Mass is at 8 am with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament beginning after Mass. Continuous prayer hours will follow until the 7 pm Benediction. Bishop Paprocki will be the celebrant/homilist for the 7:30 pm closing Mass. Our parish is scheduled to pray 9 to 10 am. CDA of Effingham 10 to 11. CDA of Teutopolis 5 to 6 pm. All youth of Effingham deanery 4 to 5 pm. All members of KC Councils and men of Effingham Deanery 5 to 6 pm A reception for Bishop Paprocki will follow immediately after Mass in St. Clare Hall. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is invited. Reflection In his quiver he hid me. Isaiah 49:2 Today s readings speak of the role of the prophet, all pointing towards John the Baptist, the last prophet, the one who points out Christ to the people. Surprisingly, a theme throughout is that the prophet comes in hiddenness. Made in secret. Held in Elizabeth s womb, and in Zechariah s silence. A hidden arrow in God s quiver. Generally, I think of John as flamboyant and outspoken: wearing camel s hair, crying Repent! or Prepare!, chastising the King. In the end though, it s not courageous words, strength of character or depth of insight that make John a prophet. No, it s something silent and hidden that makes him a powerful prophet: his relationship with God. This is the real power behind his words. We re often drawn by charismatic people. What if we pay attention not to their appearance, but to whether they point us towards God? For we, too, are meant to become arrows in God quiver. LIVING FAITH Mary Marrocco Holy Humor...Q. 4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 Question? A frequently asked question on child sex abuse is It s not my fault, why should I have to comply with these standards? This is just a clergy problem. Adults who assume this is an issue only pertaining to clergy would be misinformed about the subject of child sexual abuse and the purpose of the Bishop s Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. What we know about sex offenders is that they groom the community, the parents and the child, using methods that on the surface seem genuinely good intentioned and helpful. Child molesters don t identify themselves. 60% of molesters are known to the child and trusted by the child and parent. In 2010, there were 63,527 reports of child sexual abuse. In the 28 counties of the diocese there are 1854 registered sex offenders, most convicted of child sexual abuse. Studies tell us that 2-3% of priests in the U.S. have abused children and that 2-3% of adult males have abused children. A survey of 1700 churches of all denominations revealed that of all the cases reported 50% of the abuse was committed by volunteers. Studies also tell us that women account for 5-20% of cases when the victim is male and 18-19% of cases when the victim is female. Sometimes it takes years before a child molester is caught. A background check may not reveal any issues the main reason why safe environment training is so important is because it educates adults about ways to be aware and to maintain a safe environment. 1 out of 5 females and 1 out of 10 males will be abused before they reach the age of 18. Why would we not want to keep one child from experiencing the devastating effects of sexual abuse? The titles of the entries were Planting Seeds of Faith or Inspiring Others to Grow. Winners in Division 1 (grade 4 ) 2 nd place in the Essay category was Donovan Kitten, son of Leo and Debbie Kitten; (grade 5) 2 nd place in Art was Callie McMahon, daughter of Toby and Christy McMahon. In Division 2 (Grade 6) Stephanie Huston placed 3 rd in the Art and (Grade 8) Elizabeth Huston, placed 3 rd in Poetry. Both are daughters of Tom and Janet Huston. St. Francis Church Picnic Sunday, July 8, 2012 Chicken and ham dinner served 11:00am to 7:00pm at Teutopolis Grade School Auditorium. REMINDER: Our picnic can only be a success if we all work together. Parents, please remind your children to work their shift. If you have a conflict with your scheduled shift, please change with someone else, or call the Chairman of your stand! Items needed for the Picnic Cakes and Pies: All ladies of the Parish are asked to donate 2 pies and/or cakes for the picnic cake boxes are at all entrances of the Church. Please label the cake box with the type of pie/cake. They can be dropped off at the entrance to TGS gym beginning at 7:30am on Sunday, July 8, There will be workers at the West Auditorium door who will carry them to the cake/pie room. We are also accepting low sugar or sugar free desserts please be sure and label this also. Ice Cream Buckets: Ice cream buckets and lids are also needed. Please bring them to St. Clare Hall prior to the Picnic. Mystery Boxes: Please label all mystery boxes (girl, boy, man or lady) and mark it with a price. Children s mystery boxes sell the best with the price range of 25 to 50 cents. Fancy Work/Country Crafts: Donations of fancy work, crafts, baked goods, jellies, outdoor plants and bulbs are appreciated! Please securely wrap and label all baked items. Park District Registration Deadlines Boot Camp classes start July 9th and run each Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 5:15-6:15 am in the TGS gym concluding August 31st. The deadline to register is July 1.
