2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor We extend our sympathies and condolences to the family of Mark Harrington, who died suddenly in his new home last weekend. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. His wife, Linda, showed me a photo from Mark s baptism here at St. Francis. The priest doing the baptizing was your pastor! Pat Niemeyer was his sponsor or godfather! That was 21 April Mark s memorial service was at Johnson s Funeral Home. This weekend we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany or Manifestation, and Monday, 8 January, we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. With these two feasts we mark the end of the Christmas season. The decorations will soon be down, and we will pray in the ordinary time of the year. This is ordinary in the sense of ordinal or numbered, like 8 th Sunday of the year. It isn t ordinary compared with extraordinary. Protecting God s Children is training that is not going to go away. The purpose of the training is to make people more aware of possible threats to our children. There is a class on Saturday morning, 13 January, at 9 o clock in the St. Clare Hall, and another opportunity is Sunday evening at 6 o clock at St. Rose Parish in Montrose. These are excellent opportunities for people to get this training that is necessary for them to be active members in their parish. Recently it was brought to my attention that some people in Sigel are spreading the story that our bishop wouldn t come to St. Michael s Parish in Sigel for their parish jubilee unless the parish gave him $500.00! I didn t believe this, so I called the bishop s office in Springfield to be sure. The bishop doesn t charge anything for coming to a parish for a jubilee or Confirmation or anything. If the parish wishes to give him something, that is their business. If people pass you information that just doesn t sound right, check it out. Call me, and if I don t know, then I ll find out for you. Whoever made up these lies about the bishop needs to correct them as fast as possible. There is still a sin called calumny. I preached recently on a Sunday the 3 gate test for talking, especially about others: 1) is it true; 2) is it necessary; and 3) is it kind? This story about the bishop doesn t even get to the first gate! I know I've thanked the people responsible for the beautiful decoration of our church and the many people responsible for serving the Lord and the community by way of various ministries like the choir, reader, acolyte or server, sacristan, usher and so many others. I also want to thank the parishioners for your generous financial support of the parish. You see in this bulletin large amounts of contributions for Christmas and the end of the year, but you don't see the large contributions to ACSA, which are sent in privately! A check to ACSA is a check to the parish indirectly. Your ACSA contribution pays off the ACSA bill while at the same time lowering our ACSA bill for next year. Last year you paid the ACSA bill, and every extra dime came to the parish. Thank you for your generous support of St. Francis Parish. What is Protecting God s Children exactly? Protecting God s Children (PGC), is the safe environment program we use to educate our parish communities on the potential dangers that our children could possibly be subject to. PGC is not in any way meant to accuse or punish anyone; it is solely meant to educate in order to prevent and protect. It has been found that the number one reason an offender will not carry out an abuse is the fear of being caught. The more our community as a whole is educated on the warning signs of abuse, the more likely we are to prevent an abuse. This is why we are educating all of our volunteers. We cannot protect our children from something when we don t know what it is and what it looks like. Please, if you have not done so, take the PGC Training. Even if you are not a volunteer for the parish, this is a good thing to do for the sake of the entire community. 4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 GRADE SCHOOL Parents of Grade 2 children Children are preparing for First Reconciliation which takes place on Saturday, February 17, from 9:00 to 10:00 (A-M) and from10:30 to 11:30 (N-Z). Parent materials for child s preparation at home will be sent home with the children in a special envelope this week. Please preview the materials, fill out the last page and return this information sheet as soon as possible. Then, during the last weeks of January and the first two weeks of February, please practice the Act of Contrition and other materials with your child. Grade 4 children received a note regarding the January mission bake sale, requesting six families to donate a winter-decorated cake for the sale. The proceeds from the bake sale will benefit the boys and girls of African missions and of Nepal. Please return the response sheet by this coming Wednesday, January 10. We are asking those families and children not donating cakes to offer to bring double batches of cookies, fudge, butterscotches, cupcakes, puppy chow, popcorn. etc. NO ITEMS MADE WITH PEANUT BUT- TER INGREDIENTS, PLEASE. Pre-Kdgn Sunday morning religion class is presenting the Epiphany Program today. Children should meet in their regular class area and will be arriving in church for the Epiphany program following Mass. They are alien visitors, Magi from the east, who seek out Jesus, the newborn king. They had visas from King Herod because he urged them on the journey. The story is about Jew and Gentile. About us and them. About coheirs and copartners, to use Saint Paul s language. All members of the same body in Christ Jesus. All sharing the one mystery, the one grace. How do I help people come to Jesus? What gifts do I have? What treasures can I give? How will I treat the alien? Baptism of the Lord Monday, 08 January 2018 Christmas Time closes quickly this year. Because Baptism of the Lord falls on Monday this year (instead of the following Sunday), the Christmas season loses a week. Let us not forget to cherish our own Baptism and the charisms, the special infused gifts, that may only be used for good. Religious Education News Junior High Classes resume Wednesday, January 10. Grade 8 students will begin studying the series of lessons on chastity from the textbook Theology of the Body for Junior High Students. Grade 7 students will begin the study of the Old Testament Covenant Timeline lessons in the textbook Encounter. High School High school religios ed starts this Wednesda, January 10 for second semester! See you there! Youth Notes Youth council meets today, Sunday, January 7 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the Teen Center! All high school and junior high students are welcome for fun and planning! Recognize God In Your Ordinary Moments My mother-in-law was the best gift-giver I ever knew. One could say my parents spoiled me growing up, but there was something about her gifts to me that made me feel overwhelmed. I guess it was that after several years I still was surprised that she would think enough of me to get me something no one else would. She was able to make me feel special every time. Of course, I believe she honored me in this way because I accepted her greatest gift to me, her daughter. Sadly, my mother-in-law did not live long in this world. She passed away over a decade ago due to an aggressive cancer. Some of her material gifts to me remain, while others are long gone. But the memories and the effect of those gifts remain because it was never all about the gifts themselves. It was about relationship. It was about her and me. It was about love. What we offer Jesus is never about the gift itself. It is about the motivation behind the action and the effect that action has on the body of Christ. Many of the gifts we give today to God and his people will fade away like the mist of the early morning, but the effects of those actions will last forever. It is about relationship. These newcomers are so used to collecting plastic bottles, that they daily run away and then come back to eat. We have to train them to stay home to work and play. It ain t easy Fr. 7 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois A Bible Study on the Blessed Mother, hosted by Kate Weber, will begin on Thursday, January 11, at 6:30 pm, at St. Anthony High School, room 101. Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother will place you in the midst of the powerful drama of Mary s earthly life, taking you through her joys and her sorrows. You will learn how she works in our lives today, drawing us ever closer to her divine son. Following the study of Mary, a 5 week Biblical Walk through the Mass will be covered. We will explore the roots of the words and gestures we experience at Mass and explain their profound significance. In this study you will come to know and understand the Mass as never before, leading you to a richer, more fruitful worship experience. Please join us on our journey. 8 MIND, BODY, SPIRIT, VOICE it takes the whole person to sing and rejoice Is your child in the 3 rd 6 th grade? Do they enjoy music? I have an opportunity they will LOVE. It is a chance to participate more actively in mass, and use their love of music to enhance the worship experience for the entire congregation. I will lead a children s choir for 3 rd 6 th grade students. Beginning Wednesday, January 10 th after school from 3:30 4:30 in the church. Please encourage your children to attend and bring a friend. Are you in 7 th -12 th grade? Do you like to SING? I d love to have you be a part of our Young Adult Choir! Practices for the Young Adult Choir (YAC) are held Wednesday evenings 5:30-7:00 pm. in the choir loft. You do not have to be able to read music to be a part of YAC just have a great attitude and be willing to work and laugh is all you need. THE FIRST PRACTICE for 2018 is WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10 5:30 7:00. Please invite your friends and those who might be interested in singing but do not attend religion classes and have them get in touch with me. Once a member, you and your parent will be set up on the Remind application and sent Remind texts only for important announcements, such as Mass reminders and/or practice being cancelled.
