2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor Jerusalem Pilgrimage. Some of our diocesan seminarians, including our own Dominic Vahling, will be going on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in May This is a tremendous opportunity for these young men, and I hope that we will support this project. I will be asking the Parish Pastoral Council to allocate some funds for Dominic. In addition, I ask the parish members to also support him. We will have envelopes available in church so you can make a donation to this worthwhile educational project. Total cost per seminarian is going to be about $3500. Provincial Council Meeting. The meeting in St. Louis last weekend went well. The agenda wasn t quite as onerous as usual. I saw Br. Pauli several times. He really looks good and even baked cookies on Friday. He hopes to get up here for the last home game of the basketball season. Fr. Jim Lause was also at the meeting. He, too, is doing well. ACSA. At the end of 2012, 325 households (27.8%) of the parish had pledged a total of $44,915 to the Annual Catholic Services Appeal. We are now at 71% of our assigned goal. During the Christmas season, you should have received a pledge envelope along with the parish newsletter. If you have not already done so, please fill out and return the pledge card. We have less than $20K in order to reach our goal. Intro to Luke. I am continuing to prepare my presentation on the Gospel of Luke. I will offer two sessions January 28 and 29, 7:00 8:00 p.m., in St. Clare Hall. All are invited. If you are going to participate, it would be helpful if you read the entire gospel before coming. Attention Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. From now on, please do not wait until the Lamb of God before you move to the sacristy. Since there is already movement in the congregation during the Sign of Peace, that is the preferred time for the EMHC s to walk to the sacristy. As always, though, please do not come from the sacristy to the altar until after the presider receives Communion. Catholic Schools. Today marks the beginning of the annual Catholic Schools Week. We have a great religious education program here at SFA, but I am also a strong proponent of Catholic education. Please pray for the success of our local Catholic schools. I d also ask you to pray for Our Lady of the Lake School in Ashland, WI (my home town), the Catholic schools in Marshfield, WI (where my youngest brother, David, is the president), and St. Pius X Classical Academy in Nashville, TN (where my brother, Brother Tom) is teaching). Thanks! Fr. Austin. The latest word we got from Fr. Austin is that he is scheduled for his hip replacement surgery on January 28. Keep him in your prayers. We ll try to keep you updated on how things go. Communal Anointing. Monday, February 11, is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and is also World Day of Prayer for the Sick. Accordingly, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Anointing at 2:00 p.m. here at St. Francis. This sacrament is intended to bring spiritual healing to those who have serious infirmities of body, mind, or spirit. The rite also says that those of advanced years are also eligible to be anointed. Lent. We ve just finished the Christmas season, and it s almost time for Lent. Ash Wednesday is on February 13 this year. As in the past, we ll be collecting old palms ahead of time in order to burn them before Ash Wednesday Congratulations! We salute our own Mrs. Loretta Koester who has been named the Citizen of the Year by the Effingham Daily News. Despite medical problems of her own, Loretta continues to be a strong voice in defense of the unborn. Congratulations, Loretta! This call to prayer is prompted by unprecedented challenges to the Church and the nation, particularly the HHS Mandate and current trends in government and culture toward redefining marriage. Our Bishops call to Prayer for Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty has five components: Monthly Eucharistic Holy Hours in cathedrals and parishes Daily Rosary by families and individuals Special Prayers of the Faithful at all Masses Fasting and abstinence from meat on Fridays A Fortnight for Freedom in June/July 2013 Protecting God s Children, a diocesan mandated awareness program for all adults in the diocese who volunteer in the parish, continues to be offered once a month here at St. Francis. The following schedule allows you to mark your calendars. February 11 for all Paper Depot and Museum volunteers. March 11 for Pre-Cana presenters and Parish Council members. April 8 for members of the Men s Club and Arts and Environment Committee. Every session is open to anyone not just the invited groups. Call the parish office to register Pro-Life Corner Pope Benedict XVI recently linked...respect for life with peace: The path to the attainment of the common good and to peace is above all that of respect for human life in all its many aspects, beginning with its conception, through its development and up to its natural end. True peacemakers, then, are those who love, defend and promote human life in all its dimensions, personal, communitarian and transcendent. Life in its fullness is the height of peace. Anyone who loves peace cannot tolerate attacks and crimes against life. It s up to you through your prayers and actions to help create a culture of life and peace. May God bless you for your dedication and sacrifices for life! Religious Education News GRADE SCHOOl The Grade 4 bake sale was a huge success with $ being collected for the missions. Grades 4 through 6 have received information about participating in the CD of a Contest on the themes Jesus is Reflected in Me and My Life is a Reflection of Good. These themes may be carried out in essay, poetry, art, computer art, (music & photography grades 6,7,8). Final submission date of entries is Friday, February 8. Grades 3-6 will have blessing of the throat in church on Thursday, January 31. PRE/KDGN.- Classes take place during the 10:30 Mass in the Museum Dining Room.. JUNIOR HIGH Grade 7 will do review of Bible Timeline. Gr. 8 will cover handouts of Theology of the CD of A contest forms were also passed out to any student wishing to participate. Deadline is Wed. Feb 6. HS Religious Ed. Students have been asked to sign up to help at the Newman Breakfast on February 3 at the KCs. If your students are available, please consider having them come help at this breakfast. Newman Centers are Catholic centers on college campuses that help students stay connected with their faith. Youth Notes. Junior High Youth Council will meet at 6 pm on Friday, February 1 in the Teen Center to discuss youth events! There will be no High School youth councils on February 3. It is time again to accept nominations of parishioners to serve a three-year term on the Parish Council. Bruce Buhnerkemper, John Bushur and Jack Hardiek have served the parish for three years and now their terms have expired. Therefore, we will be voting for 3 members. All parishioners 18 years or older are invited to nominate parishioners who they feel are most qualified to share in the pastoral care and leadership of our parish. You can nominate people by sending names to Fr. John, dropping them off at the parish office or placing them in the collection basket. Simply write the name/s on a slip of paper along with their phone number or spouse s name. (A few people in the parish share the same name.) You may also nominate yourself! Deadline to turn in nominations is February 3rd. Election will be held the third weekend in February. March for Life. Please pray for our students and other parishioners as they attend the March for Life this weekend. They will peacefully protest abortion and the tragedies against LIFE. Lost & Found A pair of black ear grips and a pair of black gloves, along with a page of coupons, was found in the parking lot. Please come to the parish office to claim. CCW Thanks. The 2012 CCW officers wish to extend a huge thank you to all members of our organization who helped to make our 2012 activities so successful! We appreciate everyone from the cookie bakers to each and every picnic helper! We can only host these events with the help and cooperation from our Members. Thanks, too, for the efforts of the 2013 officers, Diana Althoff, Joan Buehnerkemper, Lois Meinhart and their husbands. We value their commitment to St. Francis as they continue the missions of St. Francis CCW. A special thanks to the Friars of St. Francis for their continued support of our CCW. 6 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 6 Newman Breakfast. The Newman Breakfast will be held Sunday, February 3 from 7:00 am until noon at the Teutopolis K of C Hall. All you can eat whole hog sausage, scrambled and fried eggs, pancakes and hash browns will be served. Also, crafts and baked goods will be available. Over 40 Newman Centers throughout the State of Illinois offer college and campus students a chance to gather and practice their Catholic faith. All proceeds go the Newman fund. Needed: Donations of crafts, baked goods, and mystery boxes are needed for the Newman Breakfast. Donations can be brought to the K C Hall on Saturday or after 6:00 am on Sunday (the morning of the breakfast), or you can call Kathy Hartke at to make other arrangements. Thank you for supporting this worthwhile cause. Taste of Teutopolis. Come join the fun at the Taste of Teutopolis on February 9 at the T-Town K of Cs. Food will be served from 5 8 pm and the entertainment will go until 10! Enjoy live entertainment, a variety of food, and the company of great people! We have pulled pork, European cheese, brats & kraut, tacos in a bag, homemade noodles, cinnamon rolls, cookies, cupcakes, soups, appetizers and more desserts! It will be a great night out for the whole family! Tickets are available at the parish office, National Trail Bank, and after Masses next weekend! Cost is just $10 in advance for 12 tasting tickets. At the door tickets are still a bargain at $12 for a strip of 12. Father Daughter Dance. Dads & daughters here s your chance to spend an evening of fun & celebrate the special bond of Dads & their little girls (regardless of age!). CHWC Father Daughter Dance will be held February 16 from 7 9 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm. We ll have dancing, snacks, games, and a chance for Dads to get their pictures with their daughters. It s a special night! Tickets are on sale at the parish office for $20 a dad/daughter if purchased in advance. Cost is $25 at the door. Have additional daughters? No problem! Additional daughter tickets can be purchased for just $5 each! Deadline to register for the Park District Classes, Zumba & Boot Camp, is February 15th. There is a $20 late fee, if the registration form is postmarked after February 15th. No, not just in the crib scenes you saw all around recently. He is here every day. He is everywhere you look. He knocks at your door every day. You see Him in the faces of those you love and meet every day. You also see Him in the face of those who ashamedly ask for help: In the mothers looking for food for themselves and their families In those who are cold because they have little or no money to pay for heat or warm clothing In those who are sick, who have no energy because their illnesses weigh them down In children who have no socks, good shoes, underwear, clothing that fit as they have grown over the past year In the seniors, who because an illness, have depleted their savings. These are your neighbors. They go to your church, stand in line behind you at the store, pass you on the street. This is the face of Christ. Do you see Him? Do you recognize Him? And then do you recognize Him in yourself? Just as everything reflects Jesus, you reflect Jesus to others. Jesus is there in you in today s world. I see that Jesus in the way you share your blessings with those in need through your donations to the programs of Catholic Charities. I see Him when we are able to help someone who is hungry, who is cold, who is sick, who is in need of clothing, who has very little money for the basic needs of life. And we are able to provide that help because of you! In the name of all of our clients, I thank you for your generosity. There was a microphone on the altar, and being uncertain whether it was switched on, he tapped it gently with no result. So leaning very close to it, he said in a loud whisper which echoed around the church: There is something wrong with this microphone. The well-trained and responsive congregation, very familiar with the liturgical language, replied at once, And also with you. Tune in to Catholic radio on 91.3 FM WGMR.
