2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 Meditation The Epiphany of the Lord Ephesians 3:2-3, 5-6 You have heard of the stewardship of God s grace. (Ephesians 3:2) Have you ever been entrusted with an important message to deliver to someone? If so, you probably worked hard to make sure it was delivered properly. That s how Paul must have felt about the gospel he preached. It was a universal, revolutionary message: Salvation is available to Gentiles and Jews alike! No one is outside of God s power to save, heal, and transform! Two thousand years later, God is still looking for people willing to become stewards of his grace. He is calling you to proclaim the surprising news of salvation. Why talk about our call to evangelize on the Feast of the Epiphany? Because today we celebrate the way Jesus glory was revealed to the Magi. Today we celebrate the way the Magi saw something special in this boy from Nazareth something special enough to make them want to offer him valuable gifts. In a similar way, when we share with people the message of Jesus the universal, revolutionary message of salvation we are showing them something glorious. We are proclaiming the greatest, most awe-inspiring news in history: Heaven is open! Salvation has come! This is a high calling indeed! Every time we share the message of God s grace, we offer people a chance to have their own epiphany. We can go so far as to say that just by living out the gospel, our lives can become an epiphany a glorious manifestation of the power of God to transform human hearts! So as it turns out, St. Paul is not the only one privileged to be called a steward of God s grace. That title belongs to each of us. So let s treasure our role I n God s plan and, above all else, let s treasure the salvation that we have received! Lord, I am in awe of how vast your plan is! Thank you for sending Jesus to redeem all of us. Help me to become a shining example of your love and healing power today. The Word Among Us B & B Sunday will resume this Sunday, January 8 th in St. Clare Hall beginning at 8:00 until 9:30. Please come with your bible and favorite beverage and join us as we discuss and learn more about our own faith story. RCIA continues to meet in the Teen Center on Sunday mornings following the 8:45 mass. Next week s topic is Marriage. Please consider bringing a friend or family member for an up-date. Personal invitation works best. BIBLE STUDY will resume on Thursday, January 19 th at 10:00 a.m. in St. Clare Hall. Our sessions will be based on the book, A Father Who Keeps His Promises by Scott Hahn. Come join us as we come to a deeper understanding of God s covenant love. Prayer Vigil for Life Sacred Heart Church, Effingham, will host the January 16th Prayer Vigil for Life. Praying the Holy rosary will begin at 6:00 pm and the Holy Mass for the safety of the Marchers will begin at 6:30 pm. Business meeting will be conducted in the Parish Center. A short segment of the January Lifetalk News Video will be viewed prior to the meeting. Refreshments will be served and everyone is urged to join us to pray for an end to abortion. All ladies of the parish are invited. We will be installing our new officers Diana Althoff, Lois Meinhart and Joan Buehnerkemper. Speaker will be Christie Hakman with an update on the Effingham Cross Foundation. Reminder We will again be canvassing our neighborhoods collecting annual dues. We appreciate speedy resolution to this task. Thanks to those ladies who have already paid their dues and those who have turned in their packets! Prayer for Vocations Lord Jesus, Fill the hearts and minds of your young people with the power of the Holy Spirit, so that with courage and generosity they might answer your call to serve the church in the priesthood and religious life. Right to Life Breakfast Effingham County Right to Life will sponsor their 38th annual Whole Hog Sausage & Egg Breakfast on Sunday, January 15th, Serving 7:00 am to 12:30 pm in the Teutopolis Grade School Auditorium. Home-baked breads will be featured and carry-outs will be available. This is an All You Can Eat event. Volunteers are needed to set-up on Saturday (beginning at 8:30 am) or anytime on Sunday. Please call Mrs. Jack Koester at Donations of home-baked breads and sweet rolls would be greatly appreciated. Please join us in our crusade to save all lives the unborn, the elderly and the disabled. All proceeds are used for educational purposes. Religious Education News GRADE SCHOOL- Parents of Grade 2 children, please mark your calendar for these dates First Reconciliation Saturday, February 18 9:00-10:00 (A-M); 10:30-11:30- (N-Z). First Communion Parent meetings Monday, March 12 and Thursday, March 15. A packet of materials regarding information and preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion will be sent home this week. Grade 4- Winter Mission Bake Sale for Honduran Missions takes place on Thursday, January 19. Notes have been sent home asking for Grade 4 to sign up to bake a winter decorated cake. (We will be needing 8. Please have responses in by January 12.) All others are asked to bake double batches of brownies, butterscotches, fudge, puppy chow, popcorn balls, etc. More information will be forthcoming. Thanks to all for supporting the Mission sales for the poor children throughout the world! Grade 3K and 3M- Personal Safety Training video will be presented on Monday, Jan.9, in St. Clare Hall. Grade 3S will view the Personal Safety Training video on Monday, Jan. 16. PRE/KDGN.- Sunday Morning Religion classes resume today, Sunday, January 8, followed by an Epiphany Program in Church after the 10:30 Mass. Children should be dropped off at their usual class areas cafeteria. Children will be escorted over to St. Clare Hall before the ending of Mass. JUNIOR HIGH- Grade 7 will continue with Lesson 2 and the Bible Timeline; Grade 8- will continue Lesson 2 of the Sexuality Program. HS Religious Ed Welcome back! High School religious ed classes resume this Wednesday, January 11. Classes run from 7:20 8:30 p.m. All students Freshmen through Seniors are encouraged to attend! Youth Notes: Youth Councils meet THIS SUNDAY, January 8 in the Teen Center. Jr. High meets at 6 & High School meets at 7 pm. We have lots to discuss! Please be ready for the fun! High School & Young Adult Ski Trip to Paoli Peaks, Indiana is set for February 4! Forms are available online or at the front entrance of church! Cost of skiing is $51 plus $24 for bus fare for a total of $75.00 (this includes bus fare, ski pass, ski rental, and lessons). Forms are due back into the office by January 29. Winter clothing and shoes are available. The store is open to the public Monday through Friday 10:00 am 4:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am 1:00 pm. Debit and credit cards are accepted. The store will be hosting in-store specials January during regular business hours. Household items and donations for all seasons of clothing and decorations are accepted Monday through Friday 8:30 am 4:00 pm and Saturday 8:30 am 1:00 pm. Please do not leave items of any kind outside the back door as they could be damaged due to weather or animals. Anyone with questions should contact Carrie Crippen at Lost and Found Two coats were left in church since Dec. 25th. One is a woman s, size 7/8 jean jacket with black collar. The other is a man s, size 14/16, gray/black parka. Come to the office to claim. Q. What is a sacramental seal and where did it come from? A. Leaving more than just a memory, there are some events in our life that are truly transforming, making us different people. The same thing can be said of spiritual things, especially sacraments. A sacramental seal or character is a theological concept to describe the life-changing and permanent effect of three sacraments on the person: baptism, confirmation, and holy orders. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that these sacraments confer a seal "by which the Christian shares in Christ's priesthood and is made a member of the Church according to different states and functions. This configuration to Christ and the Church, brought about by the Spirit, is indelible" (#1121). Once we receive these sacraments, we are forever changed. It's a spiritual "point of no return" whereby we take a step forward in our faith journey. We are marked as people of faith, as those who have received the Spirit and as those called to serve in ordained ministry. That is why these sacraments are received only once. The direction is set, the choice is made, and we are called by God to be his people. Karli Hope Goeckner Benefit A benefit for Karli Hope Goeckner will be held on January 21, 2012 at the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Hall, 1:00 pm to???? Karli is the daughter of Luke & Brittany (Gillum) Goeckner, born November 8, 2011, weighing 1 lb, 5 oz and 11.4 in. long. She is currently in Neonatal Intensive Care unit at Carle Hospital, where she will be for several months. The benefit will include baked goods for purchase, silent and live auction, 50/50 drawings on the hour and a DJ. Chili Supper for donation starting at 3:00 pm. Grandparents are Kurt & Deanna (Obert) Goeckner and Darren & Jody (Esker) Gillum. Great Grandparents are Ray & RoseAnn Goeckner, Ken & Mary Jane Esker, Bev Obert and Paul & Fern Gillum.
