Charges for the material and the installation are donated by the very generous Mette family. God bless them! Thank you very much. Next Sunday, 30 October, at 6 o clock in the evening we are having the Remembrance Mass for those who were embraced by Sister Death during the past year. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. On 4 and 5 November the diocese is sponsoring the Adult Enrichment Conference in Decatur. On 6 November we will have our Memorial Prayer Service in the cemetery at 2 o clock. I remember when the parish would meet in church on the Sunday afternoon for prayer, and then all would march to the cemetery praying the rosary. I always found it very touching, especially at the cemetery. I try to avoid second collections at our Masses, but on the weekend of 5-6 November we will have a second collection to support the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. This diocese is world-wide, and it cannot send out an ACSA bill to the many bases of the military branches! The diocese relies on the gratitude and appreciation of the American citizens. Please support the priests who serve our armed forces. In this bulletin you will find an insert that has a comparison of the 2016 Democratic and Republican Platforms. This will prove a useful tool for your discernment in voting your conscience on the 8 th of November. Year of Mercy: Who am I kidding? If I would do all the right things for the wrong reasons, would they still count? Probably not. Would God care? Most likely, yes! The Gospel paints this picture. The boasting person at prayer: I fast, I pray, I tithe, I am faithful I am not like him (and everyone sees this about me). But the humble one prays: I am far from perfect, I sin be full of mercy. The Old Testament reading sheds more light. Be like God, Sirach says. Attend to the poor, the widow, the orphan (anyone in need), God says. Look to them. Care for them. It is right and just behavior. How will I boast, not in myself, but in the Lord? How will I behave? Whom will I help? World Missions Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, you told your apostles to proclaim the good news and to make followers of all nations. They gave their lives to you, and for you, to spread the Gospel throughout the world. Today, the faithful still strive to bring your name to those who need it most. Give your strength to missionaries around the world who give their lives every day in lands far from home. Help those charged with bringing your word to be an example of you for those who cannot read your word for themselves. Help those who do their work in your name to inspire others to seek you as their Savior. We ask this through you, Christ, our Lord, Savior of the world. Amen. Laudato Si: The biblical foundation of Laudato Si is found in the story of creation. Pope Francis has said, Human life is grounded in three fundamental and closely intertwined relationships: with God, with our neighbor and with the earth itself. When one relationship is broken, the others are broken, too, and our insertion into the universe is no longer integral it is fractured and partial. The implication of understanding creation as the unfolding of God s love is that there is a moral dimension to how we treat all of these relationships including creation. The story of creation continues today and our engagement in it has failed to cooperate with God s design: The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life. A beautiful mission cross and a certificate were awarded to St. Francis at the Children s Mission Mass in Springfield. The diocesan certificate was signed by Bishop Paprocki and Vicki Compton, diocesan mission director. It read, For Enthusiastic and dedicated support of the work of the Church in the Missions. 5 October 23, th Sunday in Ordinary Time page 5 40 DAYS PRAYER CAMPAIGN FOR LIFE For He shall rescue the poor man when he cries out, and the afflicted when he has no one to help him blessed forever be His glorious name; may the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen. (Ps 72: 12, 19) Let us continue to cry out for God s help and strength to change our culture of death through our prayer and sacrifices. On Thursday, Nov. 2 nd, a Eucharistic Day of Prayer for Life will again be held at St Francis. The day will begin with Mass at 7:55 AM followed by Eucharistic Exposition, with a closing prayer service at 7:30 PM. Volunteers are needed to please commit to prayer hours in church on the sign-up sheets at the church entrances. St Francis volunteers will be helping at the Silk Purse on October 25 th, 9 AM- 1 PM, as a way of assisting the moms, dads, and babies at the Family Life Center. Please contact Karen Runde at if you would like to help. A BOY SCOUT LINGUIST: Papy is also 15 years old. He is here because his parents divorced, so he was sent to Kolwezi in order to live with his grandmother. He earned some money by shoe shining. A policeman, member of his family, counseled him to try to get into our home for we are rather wellknown. His joyfulness is contagious but he is too thin for his age so we are working with the doctors to make sure all is well. A good soccer player and a faithful boy scout. He wanted to celebrate his Scout Promise in our house but we had no money to do so He is learning how to solder in our home and also in a workshop in town. He is making progress and accepts remarks in a positive way. Why did I call him a Boy Scout Linguist? For he speaks Swahili, French, Lingala and Kibemba. Not bad for a 15 year old. We pray that God will bless the efforts of Fr. Damien, his assistants and the youth such as Papy who are helped by our Assisi for Africa missionary effort. Sewing Project-Stockings for Veterans Ladies of the parish, Effingham County Extension is again asking our help with sewing Christmas stockings to be used for the Illinois Veterans. The sewing day is scheduled for Tuesday October 25th at the Monastery Museum beginning at 10:00 am and ending at 6:30 pm. Come and go as your schedule allows. If you are willing to donate fabric or thread, it may be left at the church rectory or brought with you on Tuesday the 25th. Don't like to sew, we still need your help cutting the fabric patterns and pressing the finished stockings. Soup will be served to all volunteers. If you are not available on the 25th but would still like to help with our project, a pattern can be picked up by contacting Rita Habing at th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted." The Pharisee and the tax collector--polar opposites by practice. The one is a religious leader, a professional follower-of-the-law. The other is a deviant who extorts money for himself as he goes about his economic business. But in today's parable, Jesus flips these perceptions around. The humble tax collector is the one who "went home justified." Whereas the Pharisee has a flawless outer appearance, when we see a glimpse into his inner thoughts we detect his vanity and presumption. We see a man who may keep the letter of the law, but who is not truly converted to God's ways in his heart. The tax collector, on the other hand, pleads for God's mercy, recognizing that he needs it. So, which one are we? Honestly, most of us are probably a combination of these two character types. Most of us follow God's laws some of the time, and fail to do so at other times. But the important point is to honestly acknowledge when we do fail, and to ask God to have mercy upon us. If we think we have nothing about which to plead for mercy, chances are we are living in a kind of self-imposed blindness like the Pharisee. When we won't admit we need help, it's hard to get the help we need! Instead, we should humble ourselves by honestly examining our conscience (regularly!) and seeking God's forgiveness, particularly through reconciliation, the great sacrament of divine mercy. As hard as it may be for some of us to confess our sins to a priest, this humble act of acknowledging our failings prepares us to be "justified" like the tax collector who cried out, "Be merciful to me a sinner!" Human Trafficking Awareness Program The Effingham County Home and Community Education Association along with Fayette, Clay and Jasper Counties H.C.E. organizations will be presenting a very informative, Human Trafficking Awareness Program on Saturday, October 29, at the Watson United Methodist Church, 1300 E. US Route 37, Watson, IL, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. A free lunch will be provided. Speakers are from homes and organizations that give help and are associated with human trafficking and the bondage, bartering, and selling of humans for a profit. Also, a survivor will share her personal experiences. This program is open to the public, no preregistration, no admission fee. We are gathering on November at Lake Williamson Christian Conference Center in Carlinville for a fun and faith-filled weekend celebrating the young church of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois! The weekend includes activities for everyone to meet new people from other parishes, inspiring music and message from our keynote artist, Lee Roessler, breakout sessions on what it means to be a young disciple of Jesus Christ, and engaging prayer time for the group. Free time will include enjoying some of Lake Williamson s facilities including the pool and black light dodge ball.
