2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois The Assumption The graces of Jesus' redemption are outside of time and space. Mary is conceived without original sin. In the feast of the Assumption, we celebrate the result of that reality! Mary's soul and body are not separated at the moment of death, nor does her body decay. She is brought up, body and soul, into Heaven. Even in apostolic times, no religious site has claimed the actual body of Mary. Considering the Church's enthusiasm for relics, this is a startling fact! After Christianity became legal in the Roman Empire, the site of her empty tomb became a place of local pilgrimage. On this feast, we remember that just as Jesus has taken care of his mother, he will take care of us! The Mass Schedule for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (a holy day of obligation) is: 5:30 pm Vigil Mass on August 14th, and 6:00 am and 12:10 pm on the holy day. Save the Date August 26, after 10:30 Mass, we will have an open house to thank Lisa Siemer and Karen Pruemer for their 20 plus years of service to St. Francis parish. Please come to thank them. page 2 Mission Appeal. Each year, the diocese assigns a particular missionary group to make an appeal in our area. This weekend, Fr. John Wykes of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary will be making an appeal on behalf for their missionary work in the Philippines. Prayer Service for Kyndal Dasenbrock will be held today, August 12 at 7:00 pm in church. Kyndal was taken to Louisiana on Saturday for therapy. Please join us to pray for success with therapy. Monthly Prayer Vigil for Life will be held at St. Mary's in Shumway on Monday August 20. Praying the scriptural rosary will begin at 6:00 pm. Fr. Mark Tracy will be the celebrant for the 6:30 pm Mass. Everyone is urged to join us in prayer for respect of all life, born and unborn. The 7:30 pm business meeting will follow in the lower level of the church. Inspiration for the Week Life can be confusing, and the demands and challenges of everyday life can easily cloud our vision. We can become tired. Because of all of the energy needed to manage our day-to-day routines, our spiritual lives can get neglected. Anger, apathy, bitterness, and competition readily distort our relationships with one another and with God. We are asked to imitate God and to put love, compassion, kindness, forgiveness, and gentleness over all things. We need to develop a strong life of prayer in order to bring balance to our lives and to realize who we really are. Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 12 August 2018 Strengthened by this food. Vatican Council II sums it up in the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, no. 7. We believe without a doubt that Christ is present and living among us. We know of many ways when celebrating liturgy and, most especially, in doing Eucharist. This way Eucharist and Communion we love the most because it is so tangible. It seems personal at first. But ultimately it is always communal. We eat and drink one-by-one within the great crowd of believers coming in procession toward the altar, toward the meal, toward Christ. What do I believe about Eucharist and Communion? Why is it critical that I do this with other believers? How does this community of believers strengthen my faith and keep me faithful? 4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 Religious Education News Please register your children for the Religious Education Program before August 16, The grade school classes begin on August 17, Junior High and High School classes start in September. We would like the parents to register all their children for the program each year. We especially need the first grade students to register, since they were not in the program last year. We expect the children that were in the program to continue in the program, but some of the information may have changed. You can register in St. Clare Hall any time during the day. The forms are on a table. Fill them out and put the completed form in an envelope, then put the envelope in the box on the table. You can also register online and pay online. We are still in need of a fourth grade teacher for Wednesday and Thursday from 7:45 to 8:40 a.m. We also need a person to watch the children in the gym on Wednesday from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m. Please consider helping. Holy Humor Two robins were lying on their backs, basking in the sun. A mama cat and her kitten were walking by. The kitten complained, Mama, I m soooo hungry, what can we eat? To which the mama cat, spying the two birds, replied, How about some...baskin Robins? We congratulate all those who participated in the CD of A contest. This week we congratulate Ross Deters, son of Ted and Sharon Deters (student of Angie Esker) on placing 3rd place in Division II for his essay. The Lord has Done Great Things for us, and we are Filled with Joy The Lord has done great things for us and we are filled with joy. The Lord has created everyone and everything on the earth and He also died on the cross for us. We are full of joy because the Lord has created my family and me and without everything on the earth we would not be able to live. He has not just created good things but He has created bad things in the world, but there is probably a reason for it. Also, we are joyful because we have a loving family and most importantly we have religious freedom. We have both of those things because our Savior suffered and died on the cross for us so that we can enter the gates of heaven. There are many more great things that the Lord has done for us and will be more in the future. The Lord has done great things for us and because He did this, we are filled with joy. Gospel Meditation - Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture August 12, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Have you ever approached a hushed group and were certain they were talking about you? It's an uncomfortable feeling to catch people murmuring about what you did, said, or didn't do. It breeds division and exclusion. In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to just the opposite. The reading opens with the crowds "murmuring" their doubts about Jesus after he has proclaimed himself the Bread of Life. "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? how can he say 'I have come down from heaven'?" In his response, Jesus brings up the Israelites and the manna God brought them in the desert. If you turn back to the story in Exodus, you'll see another similar word: murmuring. As the going got tough, the Israelites doubted Moses and God's plan to protect and care for them as a chosen people. Here, Jesus proposes a difficult theological concept. Jesus himself is "the living bread" and "flesh for the life of the world." This is not an exclusive concept. "Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me." Why? Because "the Father who sent me draw[s] him." The next time you're at Mass, take a few moments to watch the communion line. Young and old, families and singles, diverse races and cultures and stories, we are all drawn to the Eucharistic table. Catholic doctrine may require faith, but it is a faith possible for anyone who seeks truth. Christianity does not hide behind locked doors in an exclusive clubhouse, whispering behind the backs of nonbelievers. Jesus compels us to share the love of God the Father for his children, that we one day be joined with Him and "live forever." Assisi For Africa News on the drilling of the well: they drilled down 85 meters and found no water. Fr Damien writes, With help of satellites, they discovered that the water is 120 meters. Now that we know that the water is at 120 meters, we have to beg for money in order to deepen the well. Since all the accessories were bought for 85 meters, they all have to be returned and bought.
