2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor Dear Members of St. Rose and St. Francis, I am scheduled to leave the area on Tuesday, September 29. I am truly grateful for the three years that I have been privileged to serve as your pastor. In many ways, it was a perfect fit for me--a small town in a rural area, young families, active volunteers, and competent staff members. It was easy to picture myself staying here for 6-10 years. But, as you may have noticed, things don't always work out as planned. I will miss you terribly and pray that both parishes continue to move forward under God's guiding hand. While I may be reluctant to leave, I willingly move to my next ministry. Sacred Heart Province has supported me through my years of training and ministry, and this is an opportunity for me to pay back on that blessing. I am purposely not tying myself to a particular parish in St. Louis because I will need to be available to provide supply ministry in a variety of places--including Teutopolis and Montrose, I hope. Thank you for your support, encouragement, and prayers over the past three years. If you head to St. Louis, stop by to visit at 3140 Meramec--the same place where Br. Pauli lives. Also, expect to hear from me. I'll be writing to let you know how you can continue to support the friars in their ministry. Peace and every good, Fr. Stop in and wish him well in his new assignment. 40 DAYS PRAYER CAMPAIGN FOR LIFE Please join in the 40 days of prayer and fasting for the end of abortion from September 23 November 1. Your family or you as an individual are encouraged to make a pledge of how you will participate. Our parish is committed to pray at Effingham Planned Parenthood on Tuesday, September 29 from 8:00am noon. Why pray outside a place that doesn t actually do surgical abortions? Planned Parenthood which receives half a billion dollars annually in taxpayer funding does more than 300,000 abortions every year in the United States. For many of their customers, the first stop is an abortion referral center. According to former workers at these locations, the referral centers counsel for and even schedule the abortion appointments at Planned Parenthood s surgical abortion centers. A prayer vigil at the Effingham Planned Parenthood reaches abortion-minded women in our area. It shows them that people are praying for them...and offering better, life-affirming alternatives. To Live the Present with Passion - Religious Life is a vocation within and in service to the community of God s people so that God s people fulfill their vocation to be a light to the nations. Tell a Sister/Friar how you see her/him helping you be a light to the nations. Love Is Our Mission : The Family Fully Alive - What is more important to the health of society than the health of the family? What is more important to our personal happiness than the happiness of our families? NOTHING! This is why it is so important for every one of us to understand what the family is called to be. Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive has been written to help us support the aims of the World Meeting of Families this past week in Philadelphia. St Francis will offer a group gathering of couples to read and reflect on this program so that we can have stronger, happier families. The Love is Our Mission program will be facilitated by Jacob and Kate Pruemer, and will meet on Sunday evenings in the Museum Dining Room from 6:30-7:30 PM. There will be four sessions starting October 18 and ending November 8. Another six sessions will be offered during Lent. Babysitting will be provided in St Clare Hall. Please call the church office at to register so that we have enough materials and babysitters; there is no cost. The Transitus of St. Francis. On October 3rd of each year, members of the world-wide Franciscan Family and those with whom they live and minister gather to celebrate the passing over from this life to eternal life (in Latin, transitus) of Saint Francis of Assisi. The Franciscans in the community invite everyone to attend the 7:30 pm Transitus Service to be held at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Teutopolis. All are welcome! Pope Francis blesses our country with his presence and his prayer. He comes to bring joy, hope and light to everyone who sees him, even over the television. His gospel message of joy is proclaimed in everything that he does; kissing infants, taking flowers from children, meeting and greeting other heads of state, proclaiming the gospel by word every chance he gets. We should be proud to be one of the 70 million Catholics in this country. He brings a gospel message as others try to politicize it. Sounds a bit like Jesus, give to Caesar what is Caesar s and give to God what is God s. Let s take our cue from Pope Francis and continue to spread the light of Jesus message in all our actions this week. 4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 The Effingham Life Chain will be staged on Keller Drive and Fayette Ave. on Sun., Oct. 4th, 2-3 pm. Prior to the Life Chain event, a prayer service will be held at 1:30 at Sacred Heart parish center. Signs will be furnished. Refreshments will be served after 3 pm. The pro-life committee is asking churches to donate cookies and bring to the center on that day. Diocesan Respect Life Mass and Rosary Walk to the abortion clinic Saturday, October 3, Holy Family Church, Granite City. Mass starts at 9:00 am. God Bless Those Serving our Country. Just a reminder: students are asked to stay at the Teen Center until 10, unless they call their parents to let them know if they are leaving early. Our Catholic Heart Work Camp Crew is gearing up for DENVER, CO, June 11-18, We will be doing home restoration, landscaping, working with the poor, working with the elderly, working at homeless shelters and soup kitchens and food pantries. In the evenings, we will be learning more about the faith and praising God in all things! Students who are current freshmen through 20 years of age are welcome to be participants in the camp. Adults 21 and older who have taken Protecting God s Children, will share the fun of faith with students, and who are ready to jump in with both feet are invited to come chaperon! It will be a blessed trip! Registration forms are available on the parish website and by calling the high school religious ed office. Forms and the deposit are due back by October 1. We can t wait to serve with you! Religious Education News GRADE SCHOOL- All children received a letter this past week explaining Mission Membership Week and the traditional activities of the year such as the October, January, and February Mission bake sales to help the families, children, and missionaries of countries in Africa, India and Nepal, and the Grade 3 Christmas Gift and Giving Store, to help the local missionaries and their missions. Each child is asked to donate 4 quarters or $1.00 to become a mission helper and for the donation, the child receives 4 chances on their grade s Halloween- decorated cake, raffled off during the Halloween Mission Bake Sale. Mission Membership Week here at St. Francis is the first week of October September 28 to October 2. As noted in the letter, please place the donation in an envelope marked with the child s name and room number. The first Mission Bake Sale is scheduled for Thursday, October 15. Grade 5 children are in charge of the Halloween Mission Bake Sale. More information will be forthcoming. Many thanks for helping children focus on their opportunity to become a mission helper to help poor children in many parts of the world get to know Jesus and his love for them through children on other continents. Reconciliation Days are coming up! Grade 4R and 4SCHU are scheduled for Monday, October 5. Children will be reviewing the Act of Contrition and the format in class in preparing for this Sacrament. Practice at home would also be helpful. Personal Safety Days are scheduled for Grade 1 during October. Grade 1B and 1M will be viewing the Personal Safety Video with discussion presented by Sister Pierre on Wednesday, October 7, in the lower East open area. Parents are welcome to attend this showing. Blessing of Animals St. Francis Feast Day is Sunday, October 4. At 1:00 on the grounds in front of school, animals will be blessed. Bring animals, pets, for this special blessing. JUNIOR HIGH- Classes take place on Wednesday night at the Junior High Building from 7:20 to 8:00. Grade 7 will be studying the Creed and the Culture the way Catholics express their beliefs. Grade 8 will be tracing on the maps the spread of the faith in parts of the early Eastern and Western countries, and the heroes who laid down their lives for the spread of the faith. KDGN/PRE-SCHOOL Sunday morning classes begin in the Museum Dining Room during the l0:30 Mass on Oct. 11th. Registration forms have been sent through the mail; also, may be accessed on line (stfrancischurch.com) ; or at any of the entrances to church. St. Francis Community looks forward to welcoming your children! 55+ will be celebrating the Feast of St. Francis week with a fall Golf Cart Ride! Join us on Monday, October 5 for Noon Mass, a light lunch following, and then a golf cart ride. The golf carts will be leaving St. Clare Hall at 1:15 pm. We will be back at church by 2:30 pm. Please call the parish office and sign up so we know how many golf carts we need. Also, if you have a golf cart you ll be bringing, please let us know that too!

The Teutopolis Band Boosters are holding their annual Fall Breakfast on Sunday, September 27th, from 7:00am until noon at the Teutopolis Grade School Auditorium. Also, there will be a Country Store with crafts and baked items for sale, as well as a raffle for many nice prizes and services. Proceeds will be used to help pay for expenses incurred with the band program. Mother of Dolores Catholic Church, Vandalia, Fall Festival is being held today, Sept. 27th, 11 am to 2 pm. Fried chicken dinner and Country Store is featured. St. Joseph Church, Island Grove Fall Breakfast will be held Sunday, Oct. 4, at the St. Joseph Parish Center. Heroin Awareness Rally to be held on the Old Courthouse lawn, Saturday, Oct. 3rd, at 1 pm. The goal is to educate, not only our community, but our younger generation about the sad and hard truth about drugs.

St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 6 Ring Day Columbus Day is coming up soon for many it means an extended weekend complete with some much needed rest and relaxation. Unfortunately, for high school students in Teutopolis, it also means Ring Day. If you grew up here, you may remember Ring Day as a day to come to Mass to bless class rings, pray for a prosperous future, and have breakfast together as a class. This is no longer the case. Most kids do not get class rings and Mass is not part of this anymore. As a parent, it s hard to be the one to say No. I don t want you to go to the Ring Day party. We worry about what others will think of our kids and if they will get made fun of for not participating. Everybody does it, right? Parents, it sometimes feels like there are no choices besides letting kids go to huge parties like will happen on Ring Day, but you do have alternatives. Find something fun to do. Host a non-alcoholic party yourselves. Got to a festival. Maybe suggest your kids pick up an extra shift at work. You do have choices. If you are looking for fun, out of town alternatives, here are some options for fun things to do as a family or a group of friends besides going to Ring Day parties. Scarecrow Daze Festival - Shelbyville, IL October 9-11 During the Annual Scarecrow Daze Festival, the entire city of Shelbyville is decorated with scarecrows. With a different theme every year, entrants decorate their homes and businesses to the theme. There is also a large parade on Saturday, kids' games, a beer tent, music, a quilt show, and plenty of food and crafts, in downtown Shelbyville. Held in conjunction with Touchstone Energy Balloon Fest. Lake Shelbyville Balloon Fest! - Come and enjoy watching as these balloons are filled and then take off for various areas. Friday night there is a launch from Shelbyville, Saturday morning, they will launch from various locations. There will be a Balloon glow and basket burn Saturday night with food and entertainment. You can meet the pilots on Friday evening. Sunday morning will be another opportunity to watch. These colorful balloons will be launched daily (weather permitting) and you can watch as they fly around the Lake Shelbyville area. Six Flags Fright Fest! It's Thrills by Day, Chills by Night at Fright Fest Presented by Snickers. Six Flags Great America will be totally transformed into a Halloween playground, Fridays - Sundays. Have a ghoulish good time with hair-raising shows, electrifying street entertainment and thrilling haunted houses. Plus, experience all the rides in the dark. There will also be a special trick-or-treat trail just for kids. Indian Summer Festival - Springfield October Enjoy peak fall colors at this lakeside garden and nature area while listening to music, enjoying refreshments and participating in family friendly activities. Highwood Pumpkin Festival Highwood, IL October 9-11, 2015 This fan favorite event is held to not only break the Guinness World Record of 30,581 for most pumpkins carved in one place, but to take it a step further by lighting a pumpkin for everyone affected by autism in Illinois- a staggering 52,000 individuals! Imagine pumpkins lining the streets on scaffolding towering over 30 feet lit and synced to music. It s a site to behold and the ultimate family event! Brian Larsen the winner of ABC s The Great Christmas Light Fight will be onsite setting the majestic lit pumpkin walls to an incredible set list, there will also be pumpkin seed spitting, pumpkin pie eating contests, carnival rides, a corn maze, live entertainment from two stages, and more! 50 or More Years of Marriage Anniversary Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, October 4, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield starting at 1:45 pm with a musical prelude. Holy Mass will follow at 2:00 pm with a reception following. This celebration is for couples who have been married 50 years or longer (or will be by December of this year).
