Joe The parishioners of St. Francis extend our sympathy and condolences to the family of Sally Weber, who was embraced by Sister Death on the 26 th of July. Her funeral Mass is this week. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord. At a recent staff meeting Sr. Ann Vincent informed us that at that particular point in time we have 232 children registered for our Religious Education program at St. Francis. This is only for grades 1 through 6. There will be more children getting registered in the near future. Thank you to all the people volunteering their time and effort for the success of our program in faith formation. We have new ways of forms of service/ministry like taking care of the children in the morning prior to the start of Mass or religious ed classes. Each person s effort is important and makes for a good and healthy program. Our electric bill last month was over $3, We are accustomed to having lights on inside church all day. I counted over 60 light bulbs that were lit. The argument goes that these are low energy bulbs, and they are dimmed. Today most of them are off. We ll track this in the winter time. So I asked about lighting the steeple at night. How many hours are the lights on, and what is the cost involved? I hope you are sitting as you read this bulletin. The cost for the lights on the steeple is $2.80 per night or less than $20.00 a week! I was shocked and expected a much higher bill. The first time I was pastor of a parish was St. Rose in Montrose in Since then I have been appointed pastor at several parishes even shepherd of a ship in the Navy, the USS KEARSARGE (LHD 3). I have never been installed as pastor of a parish till now! On 7 August, our dean of the Effingham Deanery, Rev. Chris Brey, will be at St. Francis and officially install me as the pastor of St. Francis and St. Rose parishes. This will happen during the 10:30 Mass. We can gather in the St. Clare Hall afterwards for coffee and refreshments. The first of these principles is: Respect and Care for the Community of Life. Under this principle we can find ways to a) respect Earth and life in all its diversity b) care for the community of life with understanding, compassion and love c) secure Earth s bounty and beauty for present and future generations. This week choose one way to live so that this principle becomes more than words on paper. Year of Mercy: Don t be hard hearted. We have all heard stories of relatives who fight over an estate or a supposed inheritance. Luke recounts the Jesus parable of packing away so many possessions in order to rest, eat, drink, be merry! It is Jesus who said to the crowd, and says to us today: One s life does not consist in possessions. On hearing Christ, the logical philosopher lays out this syllogism: (1) guard against all greed; (2) because life does not consist of possessions; (3) therefore, give away some things, some time, some effort, some of self. What can I give away? What time and effort can I expend to another? How will I reuse, use up, recycle? ASSISI FOR AFRICA - As you know, the money you send us every month feeds, clothes, and educates and assures the health of our 42 children. This is the most precious part of our program and I am happy to relate that everyone is in good health after having suffered hospitalization after the last part of the rainy season. Some boys are pictured with visitors who donated food, along with Raissa and Fr. Damien. Our kids are not lazy. Five of them offered to work in the seminary garden. Five are working with a local mechanic and carpenter. Two 15 year olds did a one month intensive course in welding. Two others are following a course with the Red Cross, and one has decided to become a nurse. Yesterday the 5 oldest boys came to me with a project to whitewash our house. Two are exceptionally good soccer players and have been accepted in the Junior League of the local mining company. It would brighten our day to hear how you are doing. Holy Humor...Funny how we need a 2-3 week notice to fit a church event into our schedule, but can adjust our schedule at the last minute for other events. Religious Education News GRADE SCHOOL Religious education meetings for Mass walkers this week take place at 8:00 a.m. on the following days in these locations: Monday Mass walkers for grades 3, 4 in the MUSEUM MEETING ROOM; Tuesday Mass walkers for grades 3, 4 in ST CLARE HALL; Wednesday--Mass walkers for grades 1 and 2 in ST. CLARE HALL. If you cannot attend the meeting day, please call and arrange an individual meeting time. REGISTRATION for all grade levels may take place any time this week in the entrance to St. Clare Hall. On Tuesday, August 2, Teutopolis Grade School registration takes place.. If anyone has not yet registered children for the religion program, THIS IS THE TIME! Come through St. Clare DRIVE-THRU east side of St. Francis church-- to do a short registration. (It will take only 3 minutes and there will be someone there to answer your questions.) Thanks for registering without delay! Because of the wake and funeral, rel. ed. registrations may be filled out in the Chapel entrance on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. Minutes from the Parish Council Meeting on July 18, 2016 Present: Fr. Ken, Fr. Joe, Fr. Thinh, Dan Beckman, Sandy Gillespie, Tony Pals, Lois Meinhart, Steve Kroeger, Cory Wermert The meeting opened with prayer. The following committee reports were then given: Finance: Dan Beckman End of the year financial books are in check. CHWC is further down in funds at this time. This is due mainly because an additional 25 students were able to participate this year. CHWC will possibly have to do more fundraising this year. Some possible additional expenses Church piano is in need of repair. And getting rid of the bats in the church and rectory is being considered. Building and Grounds Tony Pals A new parking lot is being considered to help with the safety of the students being dropped off and picked up at the school. Bids are now being accepted for this. Air conditioning in the sanctuary will be fixed. Security cameras are being researched and bids are being accepted. Liturgy Lois Meinhart Nothing to Report. Religious Ed Sandy Gillespie Students are currently signing up for religion classes. Two permanent catechists are still needed, and building monitors and supervisors are still being accepted. Stewardship Sharon Waldhoff Nothing to Report. Social Concerns Karen Runde Social Concerns committee held a 50/50 raffle drawing at the church picnic. Other possible fundraisers for our parish in Africa are being considered. Old Business Ray Apke was hired as a part-time employee to help Ron Ruholl. New Business The All Souls Service that is held at the cemetery will be the 1 st Sunday of November.
