2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 Meditation Ask. Seek. Knock. (Luke 11:9) We all have our limits. Even with our own children, we have only so much patience. Sometimes we just get worn out and can lose our cool with them. Isn t it amazing, then, to hear Jesus say that our heavenly Father has unlimited patience? Isn t it astounding that he tells us to go ahead and wear God out with our requests? Despite these assurances, we can still find it hard to keep on asking, seeking, and knocking on heaven s door. We still love God and trust Him, but a sense of fate or common sense can overcome simple, trusting faith in God of the impossible. We get worn out quickly or we lose our focus. Perhaps we spend a day or two on a petition, but we are nothing like the persistent neighbor with his nighttime request. Brothers and sisters, God wants us to bombard Him with our petitions every day. He assures us that we cannot overdo it. Part of the solution to problems like abortion, war, illness, broken families, and grinding poverty is constant, persistent, unrelenting prayer. Our Father wants to give us good gifts. He wants to help us with our problems. So be persistent. Go to Him every day, and ask and ask and ask. Never stop asking. Never give up. Never lose hope. I thank you, Lord, with all my heart...when I cried out, You answered; You strengthened my spirit. So prayed the psalmist in today s readings (Psalm 138:1,3). Surely we too can cry out to heaven with patience and persistence. Surely we too can keep on asking, seeking, and knocking. Why? Because the Lord is on high, but cares for the lowly (138:6). That s each one of us. He will never leave us wanting! Father, we ask You to heal our wounded, suffering world. Pour out grace from your throne, and renew the face of the earth. We will never stop praising You, for we know that You are faithful to the end. THE WORD AMONG US GOD, Why Me...Why Now...Why This? Rainey Fahey is a frequent speaker and retreat leader in the Metro-East area. She is known for her humor and compassion. Having dealt with multiple sclerosis and breast cancer, Rainey will share personal stories and reflections on finding hope and promise in everyday life, even in the face of adversity. If anyone is interested in signing up for an hour, please contact Lorraine Zerrusen at ext. 233 or and Tom & Betty Pals at Pro-Life News On Saturday, Sept. 25, Bishop Paprocki will celebrate Mass at Holy Family Church in Granite City, followed by a prayerful walk to the abortion clinic. All in our diocese are encouraged to attend. We are also asked to join in the 40 Days for Life Campaign from Sept. 22 Oct. 31. Some suggestions for this event are praying outside our local Planned Parenthood (which refers women for abortions), in our church, or at an abortion clinic; our diocese suggests that each parish choose a specific day to pray together. Do you have any input or suggestions as to how our parish can participate? RCIA is preparing to begin another session. YOU are the greatest advertisement for someone to join the Catholic Church. Are you talking about the Church with someone at work? Do you find yourself asking questions about things you thought you knew but seem to have changed? Consider inviting someone to come join a session. Anyone is welcome and there are no strings attached, if it isn t for you, God will let you know.

The evening will begin with Celebration of the Mass or prayer service at 6:30 pm. The evening will be a fun time of refreshing our knowledge of our faith with Bible Trivia! Fish and Catholic Charities Benefit Tickets may now be purchased at Donsbach/Meinhart Country Financial Office at 402 S. Fourth St., Effingham, IL, during regular business hours of 8:30-4:30. Price is $25 per ticket for the dinner theatres and $15 for the dessert theatre. Tickets may be purchased in person or by calling for the play Over the River and Through the Woods, a comedy about Italian grandparents presented by FACE. Dinner theatres, catered by Joe s Pizza and Pasta, will be held on Aug. 20th and 21st and a dessert theatre will be held on Aug. 22nd at the Bishop Parish Center. Wine is included at all performances. There are 24 front row preferred seating tickets available for $40 each for the dinner theatre and $25 each for the Sunday afternoon dessert theatre. BIBLE STUDY group meets on the third Thursday of the month in St. Clare Hall at 10:00 a.m. Join us as we deepen our knowledge and understanding of God s Word. Good News! Once again this year St. Francis Parish has been awarded a grant from the Diocesan Office for Catechesis. Our grant is for all our catechists (religion teachers, grade and high school, Adult ed presenters, RCIA and directors) to update and enhance their faith knowledge. DAEC, the Diocesan Adult Education Conference will be held this year in Decatur, IL. The grant will fund registration fees to attend this conference. This is only possible because of your generosity in funding the Harvest of Thanks, Springtime of Hope Capital Campaign. We are most grateful for your generosity as we continue to benefit from those monies. Holiday World Incoming 8th graders to outgoing seniors: join us for a LAST BLAST before school starts! Find just the right gift for the ones you love, and support our parish youth in the process. That s a great gift. FAMILY CORNER Happy Parent s Day!!! Finally, there is a day that recognizes parents. Being a parent isn t easy. It doesn t come with an instruction book and details about what to do when your child does. It also doesn t give details about what to do when your spouse does In raising children there are a few hints that have been proven over the years to be effective. Here are some that work: Be consistent; both parents should clearly know how they will deal with their children and both be on the same page; when one is inconsistent, more lenient, more stern, the child gets mixed messages and doesn t react consistently either When speaking to your children this little ditty works: If my eyes you do not see, don t begin to speak to me. Yelling from room to room doesn t help stress; create an atmosphere of respect or let the child know you are serious about what you are saying When a child gets stubborn, and they do, don t get into a power struggle; you walk away; they play every hand they can to embarrass you (they don t even know they are doing it; it comes naturally to them) Don t play the numbers game; when you count before acting, they learn that they have until you reach a particular number before you are serious. Say it once, maybe repeat and then consequences should be given right away All of this takes a great deal of discipline on the part of parents. Your pay off is a child who knows clear boundaries and understands what happens when they are crossed good self-discipline techniques. As it is your day, do something you want to do. Inform the kids that for an hour you are unavailable and sit in a favorite chair and veg-out. If the children are young and they don t get it do a quiet activity with them: color, read a book, breathe deeply 10 times. Maybe your hour will be when they get to bed. That s ok. Just take some time for yourself today. Kids: for an hour today don t scream, yell, fight, argue. Do hug your parents, tell them you love them and do something special for them. (listen the first time they tell you something) Blessings on your day!! Holy Humor...Our 3 small children announced one evening that they were going to play church. We were pleased and proud at the same time. We ate humble pie, though, when we spied them running around in a panic, pretending to get dressed, and yelling, Hurry up! It s time for church! We have five minutes! We ll be late!

This clinic will be instructed by the unit 50 Varsity Soccer Coach and members of the THS Team, and will be held at the unit 50 Soccer Field. There will be 3 sessions of this workshop. Session 1 will be held from 8:00-8:45 for grades K-1. Session 2 will be held from 9:00-10:00 for students in grades 2-3. Session 3 will be held from 10:15-11:45 for grades 4-5. The charge for this workshop is $5.00 per child. The deadline to register is August 9th. Registration forms are available on the Teutopolis Park District website. Bike Safety The Teutopolis Park District will hold a Bike Safety Workshop on August 14th. This workshop, hosted by Officer Higgs, will be held at the Teutopolis Community Park. There will be 2 sessions of this workshop. Session 1 will be held from 9:00-9:30 for grades K-2. Session 2 will be held from 9:45-10:15 for students in grades 3-6. There is no charge for this workshop. Registration forms are available on the Teutopolis Park District website. Reminders: The recycling endeavor continues to expand. Cooperation has been generally quite good. Gary Deters and I appreciate that and are thankful to all who place items in the proper bins. Sometimes though reminders are needed. 1. Only 1 and 2 plastics can be accepted here. PLEASE LOOK for the recycling symbol before you deposit plastics in the bin. 2. Rinse milk jugs, plastic bottles and other containers. Discard cap/lid and flatten. Place in proper bin. 3. Remove label from tin cans, rinse, cut out the bottom and flatten larger cans. 4. Put clean, dry plastic bags in the barrel inside the Paper Depot. Remove all paper from the bags. 5. Put aluminum cans in the barrel in the Paper Depot. Proceeds from the plastic bags and cans benefit the Youth Group. 6. Put newspapers, magazines, office paper, etc. in the bins in the Paper Depot. 7. Flatten cardboard boxes before you put them in the bin for cardboard.
