In the main entranceway of church, you will find a series of pamphlets covering a wide range of Life issues. Please read several during the month of October. In your personal and family prayer life, please pray that nations and individuals throughout the world may come together to protect and promote human dignity from conception to natural death. As a Franciscan, I feel it is also important to remind everyone that care for the environment is also an important part of the spectrum of life issues. 40 Days of Prayer for Life. The 40 days of prayer for life started on Wednesday, September 25. Today is one of our special prayer days. Even if you haven t signed up, please take time to stop at church today in order to pray before the Blessed Sacrament. The closing Benediction will be at 5:00 p.m. Please bring your children. Congratulations. Most of our baptisms involve infants, but on September 28, I had the privilege of baptizing one of our 2 nd grade students. Congratulations and welcome to Kaitlyn Tebbe who became a member of God s family through the waters of baptism. Kaitlyn is the daughter of Eric and Stacey Tebbe. Transitus. Many thanks to Kathy Adams, Br. Marc, and all those who had a hand in planning this year s Transitus service to commemorate the death of St. Francis. It was a prayerful way to celebrate our patron saint. Thanks! If you ve walked through the museum kitchen lately, you will have noticed a big improvement. Many thanks to Bernice Matteson and all who helped conquer the accumulated clutter. That area is now much presentable when visitors come to call. Weddings. We have five SFA weddings this month. We pray that all our newly-married couples will enjoy a life together that is long, happy, healthy, and holy. Called by Name. The recent Called by Name program conducted by the diocese resulted in 20 names being submitted. These names will be passed on to Fr. Brian Alford at the diocese. Blog. I d like to remind those of you with computers to regularly check out my blog. You will find the gospel for the upcoming Sunday along with a short reflection, and you are asked to share your reflection, as well. (eatonofm.blogspot.com) ACSA. Now is the time to make your pledge for this year s ACSA campaign. Last year, St. Francis reached about 72% of its assigned goal. I admit to being disappointed that only 25% of our households pledged. Like every parish in the diocese, we are asked to do our part to support the various programs of the diocese, including the training of our future priests and pastors. I ask every household in the parish to make a well-thought-out sacrifice. Please pledge. CUSA. If you have a chronic illness or disability, you might consider joining CUSA (Catholic Union of the Sick in America). Members of CUSA form small groups and then support and strengthen each other through letters. In some cases, the letters are sent by snail mail. The group I belong to communicates by . This timely program raises awareness of signs of child sexual abuse. We highly encourage all parents, grandparents, persons in Church ministry and anyone who, for the sake of our children, want to know more about how to keep them safe. All sessions will be held in St. Clare Hall. Please call to register today Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday from 1:00-3:30; Monday, Friday from 6:00-8:30; Wednesday November 6 Part 1 and November 13 Part 2 from 7:20-8:30 to accommodate parents waiting for students in Religious Education classes. Beginning Tuesday, October 15 th, from 3:00-4:30 and a repeated session from 7:00-8:30 in St. Clare Hall we will look at spiritual life after 50. We grow and as St. Paul tells us, when he was a child, he spoke like a child and acted like a child, but now he is a man. What does our spiritual life look like when we are 10, 20, 50, 70? We will explore this movement of the Spirit during these sessions. There is still time to enroll in the Scripture Study being offered at St. Anthony parish on Tuesday mornings and on Thursday, mornings or evenings. The 1st course is The Bible Timeline, The Great Adventure, and the 2nd course is Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom. You may register by calling either St. Anthony s or Sacred Heart A suggested donation of $40 is suggested to assist in defraying the cost of the materials. A Rosary Rally will be held Saturday, Oct. 12th, from noon to 2 pm at the hospital grotto in Effingham. Please bring your rosary and a lawn chair. If inclement weather, the rally will be held in the hospital chapel. All are welcome! Youth Notes: Youth Councils meet TODAY, Sunday, Oct. 6 in the Teen Center Junior High meets from 6:30 7:30 pm and high school meets from 7:30 8:30 pm. We have some planning to do! Come Paint Pumpkins! Jr. High and High School students are invited to paint pumpkins for the elderly of our parish on October 19 from 9 11 am in the Teen Center! We ll provide paint and pumpkins, but if you have any extra BLING to add, please bring it with you! We decorate them to be noticed! Freshmen will deliver the pumpkins on October 23 as part of their religion class. Religious Education News IMPORTANT Sunday Morning PRE-K religion classes have been delayed starting until next Sunday, October 13. GRADE SCHOOL- Grade 5B is viewing the personal safety video on Monday in St. Clare Hall. Parents are welcome. Also, Grade 5 is sponsoring the Mission Bake Sale on Thursday, October 17. Volunteers for baking the Halloween decorated cakes (7 needed) are asked to hand in their response sheets Monday. Thanks for supporting your child s mission project for the year. All Grades are reminded to turn in their $1.00 mission membership dues this week the dues entitle each child to receive 6 chances on their grade cake, which they will receive on the day of the bake sale. Thanks for supporting your child s efforts to help poor children in many parts of the world. JUNIOR HIGH- Classes take place at the Junior High Building from 7:20 to 8:30 each Wednesday evening. This week section 8F/P will be viewing the personal safety video; section 8 SCH will be viewing and praying the Rosary video; section 8 JH will be viewing the life of Sts. Francis and Clare. Grade 7 will be focusing on the culture of being Catholic Prayer forms, Devotions, and Eucharistic Presence. REMINDER to all Catechists The Diocesan Regional takes place on Monday, October 7, at Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Effingham. Please remember to bring your name tags. Those who have not received name tags will please check in at the door and receive your name tags at that time. HS Religious Ed Sophomores: You will be having Welcome to My World on October 16 from 5:30 8:30 pm in the TGS Gym. This is the interactive program that was listed in the Great Expectations Handbook that was given last fall. It s a great program & student s often find it to be enlightening. We need 10 parents to make this program work! Parents, please call the HS Religious Ed office to sign up if you are available. Seniors: This Wednesday, we will be meeting in our classroom and then walking over to the KC Hall to join the knights and their families in praying the living rosary. Please dress for the weather. Eucharistic Exposition will begin at the close of the 10:30 AM Mass and end at 5:00 PM. Pro-life prayer guides and other prayer helps are at church entrances. Please make time today for prayer at church for ending the evil disregard for the value of human life in our world. Thank you for your prayers and sacrifices! Prayer to the Blessed Sacrament Lord Jesus, I firmly believe that the Blessed Sacrament is Your very Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. Senses cannot grasp this marvel. Faith, however, reaches beyond what the eyes can see and assures us that You are present. We can also see You, O Lord, in the children in the womb. In a day when so many have forgotten these children, and dismiss them as less valuable than those who are born, grant that we may grow all the more convinced of their dignity and worth. Then grant, O Lord, that we may act accordingly. Amen. For the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint. Habakkuk 2:2, 3 Whenever I hear these words, I think of the times I ve been actively engaged with a group trying to craft a vision or a mission statement. Even with a team of gifted writers on board, capturing the essence of who we are and what we re about can seem an impossible task. This passage reminds us that God s word is living and always new, and that the promises God has made will come to pass, although perhaps not in the manner or shape our limited vision can imagine. 6 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 6 Scout Retreat. October 20, scouts are invited to Holy Cross in Auburn for our annual Scout Retreat. The event starts at 1 pm at the parish center. Activities for the day will include stations for scouts to work on the Light of Christ or the Parvuli Dei religious emblem. Stations for the Family of God and the I Live My Faith programs for Girl Scouts will be available as well. Cost is $5 per scout, and scouts should bring their own workbook. Youth and adult volunteers for leadership roles for any of these four activities are needed as well. When my grandfather was dying, the priest came and anointed him, and then said he would give him viaticum. What is that? A. All during our life, we receive Communion at Mass. Most are the regular Sunday celebrations. Others might have special meaning and purpose: weddings, confirmation, retreats, and funerals. Although it is the same Lord we receive each time, the reason we receive the Eucharist changes and adds special meaning to the sacrament. Whether we are praying for someone, asking for grace, or joining together as a community of faith, the Eucharist sustains us and allows us to join our prayers and sacrifice to the Lord's. As the hour of our death approaches, the reception of Communion takes on a special purpose. We receive the Lord to accompany us on our journey from this life to the next. Viaticum comes from a Latin word meaning "provision for the journey." It refers to the rite of giving Communion to a person near death. People often think of "last rites" as anointing of the sick, but there are several sacramental rites that we can receive at the end of our life, including penance and Eucharist.
