2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor Eucharistic Day of Prayer for Life. On Thursday, October 11, we will have our second Day of Prayer for Life. We will begin with Mass at 8:05 with the school students. After Mass, we will begin our Eucharistic Adoration which will conclude with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 4:45 p.m. Even if you have not signed up for a designated time, please join us for at least a few minutes as we pray for the protection of human life from conception to natural death. Please note: because of the 8:05 school Mass, there will be no 12:10 Mass on Thursday. Beginning next week, the 2 nd Mass on Thursday will be at 12:10 (with exceptions for holy days of obligation). Year of Faith. October 11 also marks the beginning of the new Year of Faith. This Year marks the 50 th anniversary of the start of Vatican II and the 20 th anniversary of the publication of the new Catholic Catechism. The theme of the year is New Evangelization. Each one of us is called to deepen our commitment to the Faith and to call others to join us. We are urged, also, to review the documents of Vatican II and to spend time studying the Catechism. One of the early slogans of the Church was faith seeking understanding. During the coming months, we pray for the grace of a deeper faith and we study to more fully understand the Catholic Faith. Rest in Peace. May God grant eternal light and peace to our beloved sister Dorothy Thoele who passed from this life on September 30 while surrounded by her loved ones. May all her earthly dreams be far-exceeded by the realities of heaven! Dorothy s funeral and burial took place on Wednesday, October 3. Reconnections. Last week, I got an from one of my high school seminary classmates. To the , he attached a 1964 letter from the Franciscan Vocation Office. That correspondence included a list of some of the incoming freshmen for St. Joe s Seminary. On the list were my name along with local residents Jerry Brummer, Ron Donsbach, Pat Beckman, Paul Habing, Tom Schumacher, and Larry Wesselman. Providentially, I recently got a chance to play golf with Ron and to reminisce with Pat neither of whom I had seen for years. Thanks, God! Scrip. Our sales of scrip cards generates a significant portion of the funding needed for our annual Catholic Heart Work Camp project. Unlike previous years, you can now designated which of the students will benefit from your scrip purchase. Liturgy of the Hours. Remember that you are invited to join the friars for morning prayer (11:45 a.m.) and evening prayer (4:45 p.m.) every weekday. I Do! Congratulations to Patrick and Stephanie (Schumacher) Pape who were married at St. Francis on October 6. May the Lord richly bless their lifelong commitment to Him and to each other. In Prayer. Fr. Austin was scheduled to have a heart catherization done on October 5. Please keep him in your prayers along with all our aging and infirm friars. Our music minister, Maria Wargolet, had some knee work done on Wednesday. We pray that she soon gets strong enough to press down the damper pedal on the piano. Travel. After making it through September without having to go anywhere, October is a different story. I will be in Chicago from the 19 th 21 st for a Provincial Council meeting. I will then travel directly to St. Louis for our annual leadership conference from the 22 nd 25 th. If all goes as planned, I will be back home on the evening of the 25 th. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated on Thurs., October 18th, at 2:00 pm in church. Fellowship will follow in St. Clare Hall. Come join in the celebration of this healing sacrament. 4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 Religious Education News GRADE SCHOOL PARENTS OF GRADE 3 CHILDREN This is the year the children do a home study of the Sacrament of Reconciliation to prepare them and their families to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during a Communal Service on Saturday, December 15. Children received an envelope containing a letter of explanation and the home study book on Wednesday of this past week. There are six lessons to study and ten weeks to complete the written responses. If your child did not receive an envelope, please call Grade 5. Children are preparing for the October Halloween Mission Bake Sale. Those whose families can donate a decorated Halloween cake, please respond by this Wednesday. The bake sale will take place of Thursday, Oct. 18. The proceeds go to the neediest children throughout the world. Thanks for supporting your child s concern for the poor of the world. Grades 1-6. All children received a letter explaining the Mission Membership dues of $1.00. This membership provides each child with six chances on their grade s Halloween cake which will be raffled off at the end of the Mission sale day. PRE K. Classes begin Sunday, October 14. Catechists who are scheduled for the first set of Sundays should have received in the mail information regarding the dates of your classes, list of children in class, a copy of the lessons to be taught with the teachers guide. Catechists should arrive at 10:00; student aides will be arriving at 10:05; and children begin arriving at 10:15. All may use the West Museum glass entrance door or the East door to the High School Religion office. Both doors will be unlocked. There will be OUTDOOR MARKERS on the East side of Church in the mini-park area designating the High School Religion Office entrance. JUNIOR HIGH. Classes begin at 7:20. Students should not be dropped off before 7:10 as there is no supervision provided before that time. This week Grade 7 will be studying the practices of Catholics forms of prayer; devotion to the Eucharistic Presence; and other devotions to Mary and the Saints especially the Rosary. Grade 8 will continue studying the witness of the martyrs Ignatius, Polycarp, B & B Sunday. Join us in St. Clare Hall from 8:00-9:30 p.m. Come enjoy discussion in a relaxed atmosphere. No favorite beverage? Not to worry. Anyone and everyone is welcome regardless. Hope to see you there. ATTENTION ALL CATECHISTS- Last week all catechists received registration forms for signing up to attend the DAEC (Diocesan Adult Education Conference) in Decatur on Sunday, Nov. 4 and Monday, Nov. 5. Forms need to be turned in before or by Wednesday, October 17 to your DRE, CRE. The Diocese is asking that all catechists take advantage of attending at least one day, and that all catechists receive at least 10 credits a year by attending this event and other educational events in their own parish. HS Religious Ed. This Wednesday, students will be asked to sign up for the KC s MR Breakfast to be held on October 21. Please check your calendars to see if this date works for your student. ALL students will be asked if they are available regardless of grade level. Please encourage servant hearts in students! Youth Notes. CHWC MILWAUKEE crew will meet on October 9 at 7:30 pm in the Museum Dining Room! We ll discuss fundraising, scrip program, the Taste of Teutopolis, and a little about Milwaukee! Can t wait to start this planning year with you all! The March for Life is a peaceful protest and a prayerful pilgrimage to stand up for the dignity and sanctity of all life. The pilgrimage takes place from January We will host an information meeting on Wednesday, October 10 before religion classes to pass out paperwork, give information and answer whatever questions you may have. Meeting is at 6:30 pm in the TGS cafeteria. Choir students can see Lisa after religion to pick up information. Youth Councils will be held NEXT SUNDAY, October 14 in the Teen Center. Exposition will begin at the close of the 8:05 AM mass with closing prayer and benediction at 4:45 PM. Please commit to prayer hours in church on the sign-up sheets at church entrances. Prayer and fasting for the intention of ending abortion can be done in whatever way you choose. Prayer to the Blessed Sacrament Lord Jesus, I firmly believe that the Blessed Sacrament is Your very Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. Senses cannot grasp this marvel. Faith, however, reaches beyond what the eyes can see and assures us that You are present. We can also see You, O Lord, in the children in the womb. In a day when so many have forgotten these children, and dismiss them as less valuable than those who are born, grant that we may grow all the more convinced of their dignity and worth. America Needs Fatima Rosary Rally on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at St. Anthony s Memorial Hospital Grotto-South side at noon 2:00 pm. Bring a rosary and a lawn chair. If the weather is inclement, the rally will be held in the Hospital Chapel. All are welcome! An estimated 8,000 rosary rallies will be held throughout our nation on this day praying for our country. How desperately America needs the Rosary and Our Lady s saving message of Fatima. CCW News Fish Christmas Stockings St. Francis CCW is planning a sewing extravaganza to benefit the Fish Christmas Store. We are asking for donations of fabric to be used to make Christmas stockings for Fish and Catholic Charities. A container will be placed in the entrance to the rectory for any fabric donations. Christmas fabric is great but, we will also accept solids and other prints of fabric anyone is willing to donate. Spools of thread (preferably beige or white) are also needed. Our plans are to sew the stockings at the Monastery Museum Dining Room on Monday, October 15th. We will begin sewing at 1:00 pm and continue until approximately 7:30 pm. Besides seamstresses, we are also in need of people to cut and press the stockings. Choose a time that works best for you. We will also need several portable sewing machines, irons, and ironing boards. Please bring a scissor labeled with your name, if you are able to help with our project. Retreat to be held on October 26-28, 2012, Friday 7:00 pm to Sunday, 11:30 am. at Il Ritiro Franciscan Retreat in Dittmer, MO. Liturgy will be part of Sunday s program. During this retreat we will explore how an addictive life is transformed through the daily practice of living the 12 Steps. 6 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 6 St. Michael s Parish Mission. The 4 parishes of Fr. Robert Bud DeGrand will host a 4 day Mission on Sunday,. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Oct. 7, 8, 9, 10, beginning at 7:00 pm each evening at St. Michael s Church in Sigel. Fr. Robert Spriggs will be the presenter of these 4 nights of Catholic awareness. Each evening will offer Benediction and Reconciliation. Hospitality will be offered each night of the Mission in St. Michael s gym. All area parishes are invited to come and join us. Scripture Study will be starting this fall at the St. Anthony Parish Center. Two 26 week courses will be offered simultaneously. The first course is The Bible Timeline which is a study of the Old Testament. This is an excellent course to learn and understand scripture. Two times are available for this session, beginning Tues., Oct. 9 at 9:00 am and Thurs., Oct. 11 at 7:30 pm. The second course, The Gospel of Matthew will begin Thursday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 pm. Anyone can attend either course. Although the Old Testament is a logical start on your spiritual journey. A suggested donation of $40 is asked to help defray the cost of materials. Friday evening begins at 6:00pm with a social, then outdoor Way of the Cross, and presentations, ending at 10:00pm. Saturday morning begins with 7:30am coffee/ donuts, scriptural rosary, reflections and discussion, praise and worship songs, etc., ending at 4:00pm. Hebrews 2:9 Today s Gospel reading can sound harsh: Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery. There are other tough teachings by Jesus. For example, I was hungry and you gave me no food. The world s history in helping the poor is abysmal. Jesus also said whoever gets angry at another has already committed murder. Yet anger and violence are rampant in our world. It is tempting to overlook the touch parts of the Gospel. But, as committed Christians, we must face them seriously. Thus, it can be discouraging for us all. These tough teachings remind us that humankind needs a merciful Savior as much as it did 2,000 years ago. Throughout this day, let us not ignore the difficult parts of the Gospel nor blind our eyes to the tragedy and sin around us. It is very real. At the same time, may we always remember that God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn it, but to save it. Msgr. Stephen J.
