As most of you already know, Father John will be leaving St. Francis parish towards the end of September to work in the Development office of the Sacred Heart Province in St. Louis. A reception is being planned for him on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 2:00-3:00 pm at the grade school auditorium. Stop in and wish him well in his new assignment. Assisi For Africa. Father Damien sends his greetings and prayers for us here at St. Francis, and notes he will be returning to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on September 20. Past bulletins have described additional projects that our extra donations are covering there. These include a house addition to separate younger and older boys, and workshop additions for apprenticeship in welding, wood working, bread baking, and other trades. Another additional expense our donations can help cover are the school expenses for 21 children. The schools in the DRC require uniforms, and the children also need suitable shoes with their uniforms and also for PE. Inscription and monthly school fees total $1,510. Father Damien estimates the total for these school expenses to be $2,360, which is not included in the children s other basic needs totaling $2,000/ month. National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children. Ask a Sister/Friar how their ministries have changed over time. 40 Days Prayer Campaign for Life begins September Days for Life is aware of 10,331 baby s lives that have been saved through the international campaign since The number of babies saved through 40 Days for Life is a powerful consolation a reminder that God answers our prayers. But we must emphasize that these are the saved babies that we know of. We don t know how many abortion-minded mothers have come to Planned Parenthood in Effingham only to see you praying in front of the building. Empowered by your presence, they opt not to turn into the parking lot and instead continue down the street. We ll never count those babies, but their lives are just as valuable and precious as those we can count. Could you pray sometime between 8:00 AM noon on Tuesday, September 29, on the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood in Effingham? As I grow older I am aware of times when I sound like my mother or I act like my dad. Some of those times are good and some are bad depending. I do reflect though on those times when I seem to have said something less than uplifting, what would it have taken to have said something in a more positive light? How can I bring more light to everyone s life I meet this week? How can I be proactive with that light rather than, Oh darn, I could have said that in a better way. Let s try to be a pro-active light this week. Adult Enrichment/Catechist Formation options coming up: Women of the New Testament held at St. Francis in St. Clare Hall beginning Oct. 6 through Oct. 27 Discussion on the Encyclical, Laudato Si, by Pope Francis held at St. Francis in St. Clare Hall beginning Dec. 3 through 17. HIGH SCHOOL REL. ED. High School Religious Ed Classes begin on September 23 for all high school students. We will meet in the gym for opening prayer, class assignments, and announcements the first night. Classes run on Wednesday evenings from 7:20 8:30. Please remind students to be at the grade school by 7:15 so they aren t late for their class! This will be a great year for sharing faith! Come serve with us CHWC 2016! Our Catholic Heart Work Camp Crew is gearing up for DENVER, CO, June 11-18, We will be doing home restoration, landscaping, working with the poor, working with the elderly, working at homeless shelters and soup kitchens and food pantries. In the evenings, we will be learning more about the faith and praising God in all things! Students who are current freshmen through 20 years of age are welcome to be participants in the camp. Adults 21 and older who have taken Protecting God s Children, will share the fun of faith with students, and who are ready to jump in with both feet are invited to come chaperon! 6 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 6 Prayer for Vigil for Life. Sacred Heart, Effingham, will host the September 21st Prayer Vigil for Life. Fr. Ron Hilt will be celebrant and homilist for the 6:30 pm Mass. Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 pm. Pro-family legislation and current local pro-life events will be on the evening s agenda. Everyone is urged to join us in prayer for an end to abortion. Refreshments will be served. Protecting God s Children training will be offered: Sept. 22 in St. Clare Hall from 6:30-9:00 and again on April 14 in St. Clare Hall from 6:30-9:00. Please call the parish office to register. Should anyone not be able to attend either of these sessions, there are locally sponsored sessions in the area that may be attended. Please be aware, that unless an adult has taken the session they may not volunteer in any church related capacity. Teutopolis Catholic Daughters of America Court St. Francis #1711 will host the monthly meeting on Monday, September 28th, at 6:30 pm, (salad supper) at the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus meeting room. Visit: A note from Brother Pauli: To all, I have returned back to St. Anthony s on August 1. I would like to thank the good people of Teutopolis for their many prayers and best wishes for my recovery. I spent 2 ½ months in recovery and re-hab. Humbling Ourselves The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him...mark 9:31 Jesus and his disciples are walking along as they did so often. But suddenly he starts telling them he is going to be arrested and put to death. The disciples can t deal with that, so they distract themselves by arguing about which of them is the greatest a classic example of denial as a defense mechanism. But Jesus won t let them get away with it: What were you arguing about? The disciples are embarrassed. But Jesus sits down with them and gives them one of his profound teachings: If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be...the servant of all (verse 35). Jesus intended that teaching for all of us. We have the same tendency as those apostles: wanting to rank ourselves above others. Alcoholics Anonymous has a wonderful slogan: Humility means not to make comparisons. Humility does not mean, I am a terrible person, but simply: I am blessed and gifted in some ways and flawed in others. So I can accept myself, and accept you, without feeling either superior or inferior. LIVING FAITH, Fr. Martin Pable, OFM. The Teutopolis Band Boosters are holding their annual Fall Breakfast on Sunday, September 27th, from 7:00am until noon at the Teutopolis Grade School Auditorium. Also, there will be a Country Store with crafts and baked items for sale, as well as a raffle for many nice prizes and services. Proceeds will be used to help pay for expenses incurred with the band program.
