2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 Dear Parishioners, As you know, Brother Pauli announced that he is semi-retiring after fourteen years here at St. Francis and St. Rose. However, there seems to be some confusion where Br. Pauli can best accomplish this reality. Brother will be leaving us and living at St. Anthony parish in St. Louis, Missouri. We want to give you an opportunity to express your personal gratitude to Brother, so we will have a farewell party for him in the mini-park on Saturday, Oct. 16th, after the 5:30 pm Mass. I know he is looking forward to seeing you, especially his servers and sacristans. God bless Br. Pauli! Peace, Love, Joy, Fr. Austin And the apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith. Luke 17:5 A Pastor recently told me that he had visited a dying, elderly person. He spoke to her about our loving God, the saving death and resurrection of Jesus and of the glorious life with God in heaven. She responded sharply, I don t believe in such fairy tales! Sadly, the next day she died. Christianity puts before us a faith so wonderful that it can be hard for some to believe. As today s Scriptures tell us, we are unprofitable servants; we are only human, made of this humble earth. How can such a beautiful story be real? Yet, already in our lives we have signs, little mustard seeds, of the truth. When we experience the selfsacrificing love of a parent, the majesty of the universe or the warmth of good friends, we are given a glimpse of their Author s infinite love and grandeur. You and I are surrounded by signs that this beautiful Christian fairy tale is true. We are willed into being by a Creator who loves us and invites us to share an eternity of joy. Too good to be true? What do you think? LIVING FAITH Msgr. Stephen J. Rossetti A Pro-Life Thought Families with lots of children are no longer considered examples of generosity, but rather irresponsibility. [Our culture says that] children with severe disabilities are not special angels sent to us by God, but drains on the economy; better that they were not born. And the elderly are burdens. But if we succeed in pushing away everyone who is dependent, then we re left with ourselves, our egocentric, sin-rationalizing, defensive, irritable and vain selves. If we never learn to give till it hurts, till the painful reality that we re not the center of the universe sinks in, we will fail at marriage, at parenthood, at citizenship, even at simple neighborliness. ~William E. May, PhD, On Being a Burden to One s Family The Transitus of St. Francis This weekend we will celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron of our parish. He is honored for his tremendous love of God, imitation of Jesus and care for the poor, especially those with the disease of leprosy. For centuries Franciscans (priests, brothers, sisters and Secular Franciscans) have gathered on the evening before the feast to celebrate his death, that is, his transitus (passing) from life on earth to eternal life. This year the Transitus will be held this Sunday evening, October 3rd, beginning at 7:00 pm. You are invited to join us for this commemoration of St. Francis death and then come to the friary for refreshments. Parish Banner REMEMBER way back in 2003 when the diocese was celebrating its Jubilee? At that time a banner from our parish was commissioned. The banner is used for special parish feasts like today. The following explanation of the banner was given at that time. The edging of blue with the white background reminds us of the colors of our church. Because we are strongly Franciscan, the Tau Cross, a Greek letter and symbol for the cross that St. Francis wore, was chosen to be our symbol of the deep faith of the people of St. Francis of Assisi Parish. The sun, moon and stars in a bed of blue symbolize all of the heavenly creation that glorifies and gives honor to God, its Creator. The tree and flowers denote the rural and farming aspect of our community. If you look at the tree upside down, it resembles a person having deep roots. We are rooted in strong family values and traditions of the Catholic Church. The chalice symbolizes the Eucharist that is central to our faith as Catholics. A dove with olive branch signifies our desire to be peacemakers in a world so filled with violence and war. Of course, no symbol of St. Francis of Assisi in Teutopolis would be complete without a pair of wooden shoes, shown nestled at the foot of the cross. The parish name and date of foundation complete the banner. Life Chain 2010 will take place Sunday, Oct. 3rd. Gather at Sacred Heart Parish Center, Effingham, for Prayer Service at 1:30 pm. Chain 2-3 pm. Signs will be furnished. Diocesan Respect Life Mass Youth, families, and adults are encouraged to join Bishop Thomas John Paprocki at Holy Family Church in Granite City on Sat., Oct. 9th, for Mass at 9:00 am followed by a rosary walk and prayer vigil at the abortion clinic, and 11:00 am lunch.

(2 Chronicles 7:14) Public Rosary Rally Join thousands of people across America on Saturday, October 16th, at noon, at the Grotto by the Teutopolis Grade School to pray the rosary for our nation. Our society is becoming more secularistic. Prayers are needed to reverse that trend. Prayer changes people s hearts; when people s hearts are changed, better actions follow. Over 5,000 Rosary Rallies will take place on October 16th. You are invited to be a part of our local Rosary Rally. Homebound Ministers Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion to the Homebound for Sunday, October 10th are: Rita Pals , Eleanor Gebben , Mary Jane Koester , Mary Runde
