2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor Thank you to everyone contributing food at our Masses on Thanksgiving Day to be distributed by Catholic Charities, and I m sure your financial contribution to Catholic Charities from the two Masses will be much appreciated. Catholic Charities continues to be one of the best places for donations spent for those in need. Congratulations to our teenagers receiving the sacrament of Confirmation this Wednesday, 30 November. The class of confirmandi are grateful to their teachers and their director, Lisa Siemer. The catechists for confirmation are: Theresa Bushur, Jacob and Kate Pruemer, Amy Ruholl and Karen Pruemer. Thank you, and thanks to all the catechists, who have shared their faith with our class during their years of learning about the Church and growing in their faith. See ya ll at the Homecoming Game on 2 December. On 8 December, we have the feast of the Immaculate Conception, which is a holy day of obligation. We will have a vigil Mass on Wednesday evening, 7 December, at 7:30, and then we will have Masses on the holy day at 6:00, 7:55 and 12:10. There isn t an evening Mass on the holy day. Please choose from one of the four Masses to come and pray. The Finance Council will meet Monday, 5 December, at 6:30, and the Parish Pastoral Council meets immediately after 7:30. An issue that the Liturgy Committee is recommending to the Pastoral Council has to do with music at the Sunday 6:30 a.m. Mass. Building and Grounds will consider another proposal for the front of the church. This will not be acted upon until the spring with warmer weather. Children in grades 1 and 2 and their families have contributed 107 Christmas shoeboxes for the poor children of the world. The total cost for shipping these boxes is $ We thank parishioners who have already donated the $7.00 for shipping each box. We are still in need of dollars to reach our goal, so if you have not already done so, please consider placing $7.00 cash or a check for $7.00, made out to St. Francis Church, marked Shoebox in the collection basket this weekend. In the end, I have to take responsibility about my attitude toward my neighbor, toward my co-workers, toward my family members. Am I creating spaces of non-violence by the way I speak, by the way I interact, by the way I live? Each day there are opportunities to create peace, to weave a tapestry of justice. Am I taking those opportunities or am I leaving them undone, unwoven? What does my life say, what message does it proclaim? Do I have the same attitude toward all? I must be the change I hope to embody. Where would change begin? 4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH ACTIVITIES GRADE SCHOOL Grade 4 4Schu and 4Sco students will have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Monday, November 28. 4S students will assemble in their classroom for Advent videos. Grade 3 Students will assemble in Room 3K, for Advent videos on Monday, November 28. MISSION ACTIVITIES Grade 3 This is the last week to bring in your gift/s for the Christmas Store, which opens in the Museum Dining Room and in St. Clare Hall on Tuesday, December 6, for Grade 2 and Grade 5 children; on Wednesday, December 7, for Grade 1 and Grade 6 children; and on Friday, December 9, for grades 3 and 4. God bless all of you and all others who are providing the gifts to be purchased! The missionaries and mission children are praying for you and your families, as we in turn, are praying for them. PRE/KDGN Sunday morning class will NOT take place this Sunday, November 27. On the three Sundays in December, we look forward to teaching the children about the Christmas and Epiphany stories and practicing the Epiphany skit which will be performed on Sunday, January 8, in church following the l0:30 Mass. May this celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation prove to be a strong faith growth experience for all participating! Giving Trees Our Giving Trees are up! If you would like to give a gift to someone in a nursing home or group home in the Effingham area, please be sure to get your tag from the Giving Trees located at the church entrances! This year, we are also adding tags for the Sr. Thea Bowman School in East St. Louis (the school that Fr. John Eaton is helping with teaching music). Wrapped Giving Tree gifts, (each with the tag taped to the front) are due back into church by December 11 and can be stacked in front of Mary s altar. We will be delivering gifts to the various group homes & nursing homes on Monday, December 12. Anyone who would like to help sort and deliver is encouraged to call the parish office to sign up! Thanks for brightening the Christmas Season for those who need you! Christmas Cookie & Candy sale will be December 10 & 11 after all Masses! Come enjoy homemade, decorated cookies and candies for just $7 a plate! CHWC families will be providing the cookies, and proceeds will help go towards their trip. Thanks for supporting the youth of our area! FaLaLaLaLa! Let s go Christmas Caroling! The youth of the parish and their families and friends (that includes anyone who would like to go for a singing stroll!) are invited to share the Christmas Spirit on December 4. We ll meet in the Teen Center at 6:30 pm and go out as a group Christmas caroling until about 7:45 pm. We ll have hot chocolate complete with chocolate spoons and also cookies. We ll be finished by 8:30 pm! Come celebrate the season with us! RCIA meets on Mondays at 7:00. This week our topic is the Church Year. The evening will begin at 6:30 pm at TGS Auditorium. Turkey, dressing, noodles, rolls, drinks and table service will be provided for the dinner. Please bring a covered dish. A $3.00 gift exchange is optional - please put your name on gift so that the receiver will know who it is from. Please join us for a delicious dinner, fun, and fellowship. BULGING WITH BROTHERS IN CONGO -This year is a record year for vocations. Five brothers were ordained and after they left our seminary, 18 new brothers arrived, creating a community of 87 Franciscan friars! Pictured is a candidate who is being sent to study in Croatia. We Franciscans in the Congo have 6 houses that we rent out, we have a cyber cafe, we rent out school rooms for a local grade school and other rooms for other activities, we have a one acre garden and 250 egg laying chickens who should start laying about now. We earn very little by our teaching and pastoral work. Despite all these activities, we always fall short. Our province has a huge debt with the Salesian hospital, and our local health expenses go beyond our budget. So, what to do? We certainly have to be severe in our discernment of vocations. But this takes time and patience. We cannot count on our local parishes to help us out much for they are poor. At this point of history, we ask everyone to pray with us so that we might know what the Lord wants of us. Father Damien hopes to share our photos and stories with the boys in the Congo. For information or details, call WHRC at , or Denny (area captain) at , or kirchdr@yahoo.com HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois are looking for volunteers for: Homecare: Visiting with the patient in their home at least once a week to provide companionship, a listening ear, comfort care and emotional support. Volunteers provide respite and emotional support for the caregiver. Bereavement: After the patient passes, a 13 month bereavement follow-up for the primary caregiver is provided. This period consists of volunteer telephone calls, cards sent on important dates and special occasions, or visits. Again, you must be willing to listen. Clerical: Office help is needed. Volunteers make calls, file, make copies, stuff envelopes, etc. Spiritual Care: Pastors and lay people volunteer to provide spiritual support to patients and their families when requested. Complete training to become a Hospice Volunteer is provided free of charge. For more information, please call or toll-free Area Events Christmas Walk St. Isidore CCW (Dieterich) is sponsoring a Christmas Walk on Sunday, December 4. Proceeds going to Crisis Nursery of Effingham. Those hosting this event are Chris and Tina Schmidt, Matt and Candace Brummer, The Beehive Beauty Boutique in Dieterich 1:00-4:30, and the Immaculate Conception Hall (Dieterich) 12:30-5:30. On display at the Hall; vintage baby/nursery items, including apparel, quilts, toys, etc. Refreshments will be served. There will also be a raffle with many items; one being a handmade Christmas quilt. Proceeds from the quilt raffle will be given to Operation Santa (a Military organization). Tickets may be purchased in advance at Washington Savings Bank, Effingham; Teutopolis State Bank, Teutopolis or Sigel; and also at Dieterich Bank, Dieterich or Teutopolis. Tickets may also be purchased from any of the stops on the walk the day of the event. SANTA will be making a visit also. Come and get in the Christmas Spirit. Advent Evensong will be held at Holy Cross Church, Wendelin on Sunday, December 11, 2016, 4:00 pm. A candlelight service with Scripture, Organ, English Carols, and Austrian Christmas music - sung in German, by the Wendelin Kloepfen Singers. Refreshments afterwards in the Parish Center. All are welcome. 2nd Annual Shoot and Shout for a cure event, presented by the TJHS Boys Basketball Team and Cheerleaders. All proceeds going to community cancer patients and survivors through Fear Nothing. Event dates and activities: 1. December 16th - chili supper at TJHS cafeteria Raffle items at TJHS boys home games 3. Hoop shoot competition /sponsorship 4. Shoot and Shout for a Cure game vs. St. Anthony being held at the high school gym.
