Because, although we do not like to face the fact, the sexual abuse of children happens. Because we should take advantage of whatever opportunities we have to be well informed and prepared as possible to make life safer for our children. Because our bishop requires us to participate. Because we need to show that as a parish we have done all we can to protect our children. So, YES, go to a session of Protecting God s Children and encourage others to do the same. From Fr. Joe Carlos The parishioners extend our sympathy and condolences to two families, who have recently lost their loved ones. Sister Death embraced Agnes Kremer, whose funeral was 29 July and Ronald Ordner whose funeral was on Wednesday of this past week. We extend our support to the Kremer and Ordner families, and we pledge them our prayers for their loved ones. We welcome Fr. Chuck Edwards to St. Francis Parish this weekend. He is preaching at all of our Masses on the topic of Stewardship and Discipleship. Bishop Thomas John Paprocki has entrusted to Fr. Chuck the task of heading up this new department in the diocese. Please come to the Grade School Auditorium this Sunday afternoon, 13 August, to learn more from Fr. Chuck. He will gladly answer any of your questions. I m sure some parishioners remember Fr. Ted Bracco, who lived here at St. Francis Friary while he taught at St. Anthony s High School in Effingham for several years. Fr. Ted died the night of Tuesday, 8 August. His funeral will be in the Quincy University Chapel on Monday, 14 August. He retired at Holy Cross Friary in Quincy. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. This Thursday our children have a half day of school, and Friday marks their first full day. Summer is over believe it or not! Freshmen will be heading to college and learning their way around the campus. It is an exciting time of the year, new starts. Let us keep our catechists, supervisors, helpers, walkers in our prayers we would have no religious education program if these generous and devoted parishioners didn t share their faith with our children. Needing to be quiet. We hear today of the need to get away Elijah, pursued by Jezebel, is running for his very life; Jesus, dismissing the crowd, goes off to pray. Both do this alone. Both hear God speak in a tiny sound, in a single small whisper. The point may be this: nothing we see and nothing we hear is too insignificant to make present the glory of God. God is always there to save me, save us. When will I, each day this week, make time to be still? When will I listen for God s single small whisper? Elijah is told: The Lord will be passing by. How can I look for God everywhere? Protecting God s Children Workshops All persons in any church ministry are asked to take a couple hours and be trained in the signs of potential abuse to watch for in order to keep our vulnerable population safe: elderly, mentally challenged and children. 4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 Religious Education News GRADE SCHOOL ATTENTION MASS SUPERVISORS Meetings this week are scheduled at 8:30 in St. Clare Hall on these days: Tuesday, 8/15 - grades 3 and 4; Wednesday, 8/16 - grades 1 and 2; Thursday, 8/17 - grades 5 and 6. If you cannot come on the day assigned, please come on another day to learn new information and pick up materials. Mass supervisors for grades 5 and 6 begin on Friday, August 18. All others begin on the week of August ATTENTION VIDEO PRESENTERS Meetings this week are in St. Clare Hall at 8:00 on Tuesday, 8/15 and on Thursday, 8/17. Thanks for planning to attend this important meeting of the year and for saying yes to helping the religion program. NOTICE Every five years persons who have taken part in the Protecting God s Children Program will receive in the mail a background check renewal form to complete. Parents of all Grade 1 children and those new to the program who have not filled out a registration form in St. Clare Hall or on-line, please do so immediately, so we can complete our class rosters. All classes (Grades 1-4) and attendance at Masses (Grades 5-6) will begin on Friday, August 18 at 7:55. Please have your child/ren at the school by 7:50. If you wish your child/ren to be supervised in the morning hours from 7:15-7:50, you will need to fill out a form. Any questions, please call This year children who come for early morning supervision may bring with them card games, board games, story books, picture books, jigsaw puzzles etc. HIGH SCHOOL Our Freshmen and Parents Meeting will be held on September 20 at 7:30 pm in the TGS Cafeteria. We will discuss the Confirmation program and answer questions. Students, please bring a parent with you & let's get started on Confirmation preparations! High School religious ed classes begin on September 27 and run from 7:20-8:30 pm. Please meet in the gym this first night of class! All high school students are encouraged to attend--faith learning doesn't stop with Confirmation! The sacrament should be a springboard for diving deeper into our relationship with God! Prayer for Students and Teachers Loving Father, our teacher in all things, we ask for your wisdom to begin this school year as students of your love and as teachers of your wisdom. For you gave your law to our Jewish brothers and sisters to help them live in peace with each other. So too you give your wisdom to each of us to learn and grow in holiness and goodness in the world around us. May this coming year of learning together about you and about the world you created offer each of us an opportunity to help us shine the bright light of learning into the darkness of this world. I read once that to be a gracious person meant to walk softly, speak with intent, and to leave those you have met feeling that their lives were better that day because they encountered you. What a way to live! But alas, living like that each and every day is so very hard. I hate to think that sometimes people I have encountered are happy to see me go, but I know that it is true. As Christians we are graced people, but on some days, that grace can seem pretty hidden. If you are looking for an example of gracious living look no further than Our Lady. She answered the call regardless of the cost and she lived her life with a great dignity in the face of horrible trials. She was a gracious host to the Incarnation in her womb and she continues to invite us to get to know her Son better. She certainly embodies the definition of gracious living above. We are called to always be ready and open to the call of her Son. He will bring us to those in need, seeking light in a world of darkness. Our hope must be then that after our encounter with another, they will feel enriched by our presence. Of course, we will know, like Our Lady knew before us, that it wasn't about us at all. Fortunately, Raissa came back we are proud that our own boys worked with Raissa and are in the process of learning how to build big and small houses The roof is now in place and they will finish the cement floor (a luxury here) so that we have a cleaner living area. We still have to build a drain around our two buildings for the rain can reduce one of our buildings to shambles for the foundations are very vulnerable to the rain.» Let us continue our prayers and donations in the effort to help these boys. She had a special love for her Son, who is God, that made a claim on her entire being, body and soul. It is no wonder then, that upon her death Mary was taken body and soul into heaven so that she in her totality could dwell forever with her Son. Our celebration gives us the opportunity to ponder what heaven may be like and help us to long, even more fervently, for the fulfillment and joy that only God can eternally provide.
