2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From The Pastor Greetings from Ashland, WI. My trip from T-Town to Ashland on Sunday took almost exactly 12 hours--a long haul for me. The weather was good, and none of the construction crews were working on Sunday. The crops along the interstate in southern WI looked good--but mostly because they were all under irrigation. The grass and other vegetation along the roadside was as brown as central IL. Monday was my father's death anniversary (1990). I got on my bike and cycled up to the cemetery to visit the family gravesite. Later on Monday, my sisters Karen and Anne talked me into going berry picking with them. We picked raspberries for an hour and then blueberries for about 30 minutes. Both berry crops were unusually productive this year. I got a chance to visit with several of my former parishioners. My mother and I were up early on Tuesday to make raspberry jelly (an old family tradition) and to freeze blueberries. Later, I was able to get over to the golf course to walk 9 holes before it got too hot. My niece Elizabeth stopped at the house a couple of times, giving me a chance to see how my grand-niece, Elenore, is progressing. It started raining about this morning, and that made me think of central IL. We got the kind of rain that the farmers in T-Town and Montrose could use--a gentle, soaking rain that lasted for several hours. I created a FaceBook page for St. Francis Church yesterday. My intention (once the sun comes back out) is to post some pictures so folks can see what's going on up here in the north woods. As time goes on, the FB page could become an important vehicle for keeping parish members up-to-date with parish events and announcements. For now, though, if you have a FB account, please check out the St. Francis FB page and "like" it. Sunday, July 29th, is my mother's 85th birthday. Please keep her in your prayers. Peace and every good, Fr. John Sympathy We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Herbert Pruemer. May he be enjoying eternal peace and happiness in heaven. Reflection There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. (John 6:9) Have you ever noticed that sometimes when you bring your gifts to Jesus as this young boy did, nothing much seems to happen? They just seem to sit there, undeveloped and underappreciated. Did you ever think that perhaps, to use a business parallel, the blockage is on the distribution side? Jesus didn t tell his disciples to just sit quietly while he multiplied the loaves. He told them to have the people recline he told them to get the crowd ready for the miracle he was about to do. Similarly, Elisha didn t explain away his servant s objections, he simply repeated his instruction: Give [the food] to the people to eat (2 Kings 4:43). It wasn t time to sit by and wait for Jesus to do something; it was time to get to work! And so the disciples organized the people into groups sitting on the grass, and Elisha s servant started handing out the food. That s when the miracles happened. So if you want to see your offerings to God multiplied, you have an essential role to play. You may not be working the miracle yourself, but you do need to get out there and do something! It s impossible to know what that something is in each situation. We all have different gifts, different life situations, different opportunities that will present themselves today. But one thing is sure: Each of us will have an opportunity to do something important for the kingdom of God. Starting today, try your best to be open to your Father s promptings when it comes to the people you meet, the situations you encounter, and the movements of your heart. And then take a step in whatever direction you think he is leading you. The result may surprise you! Heavenly Father, I am not sure how to start. But I will take a step in faith today. Show me what you have for me to do, and how my gifts can bear fruit for your kingdom. An indulgence has been granted to all the faithful who visit any Franciscan church throughout the world on this feast. The condition of gaining a plenary indulgence either for yourself or a deceased loved one is a devout visit to a church enriched with this privilege, anytime from noon on August 1 to midnight on August 2, praying one Our Father and the Creed for the intention of the Holy Father, as well as some other additional prayer, and going to Confession and receiving Holy Communion within a time span of eight days before or after the feast. Attention Homebound Holy Communion will be brought to you on First Friday, August 3. No Communion to you on Sunday, August 5.

The evening will be filled with exercising our mind, body and soul through education, activity and prayer. Our focus will be on Faithful Citizenship, recognition of our Deanery Women of Distinction and information regarding our upcoming Diocesan CCW Convention and NCCW Convention. We invite ladies to carpool from your parishes for an evening that will support, empower, and educate us in spirituality, leadership and service calling us to action! Why was Fr. Maximilian Kolbe, whose memory we recall on August 14, canonized a saint by Pope John Paul II? A. Father Maximilian Mary Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan who promoted a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin wherever he went. Having been ordained a priest in Rome in 1918, he returned to Poland to teach in the seminary. During decades as a teacher in Poland and a missionary in Japan, Fr. Kolbe continued to promote devotion to Mary through various Marian organizations. On February 17, 1941, he was arrested by the German Gestapo, and on May 25 was transferred to Auschwitz as prisoner # In July 1941, a man from Kolbe's barrack vanished, prompting the camp commander to pick ten men from the same barrack to be starved to death to deter further escape attempts. One of the selected men, Franciszek Gajowniczek, cried out, lamenting his family. Fr. Kolbe volunteered and was allowed to take his place. After two weeks of starvation, four men, including Fr. Kolbe, were still alive. On August 14, they were given lethal injections to hasten their death. Fr. Kolbe's body was burned the following day, on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. Fr. Kolbe was canonized and declared a martyr for the faith by Pope John Paul II on October 10, 1982, in the presence of Franciszek Gajowniczek, the man whose place he had taken. Michelle Schmidt, who had been collecting them, has no further need of them. Thanks to all who saved lids/caps for the cause. Recently I was asked, Why do plastic caps/lids have to be removed from bottles? The caps/lids are plastic. I called Sutter Sanitation Services about that question. I was told that the lids/caps are of a different kind of plastic than the bottles. The bottles cannot be recycled with the lids/caps. The lids/caps must be removed before the plastic bottles can be recycled. I realize removing the caps/lids can be an inconvenience especially when the bottles are not empty. Recycling requires some effort. We need to think more in terms of recycling rather than discarding things. Donations are needed to help cover the costs of recycling. It costs to haul and bale the recyclable items. Thousands of plastic water bottles or milk jugs are needed to make a ton. Considerable expenses are incurred before a ton of plastic water bottles or other plastics reaches a manufacturing plan that processes them into a new item. We pay to have trash hauled to a landfill where non-biodegradable materials will remain for ages and will be a problem for someone in the future. I think it makes more ecological sense to pay to have materials recycled than to have them piled in a dump. We owe it to future generations to pass on a good earth.
