2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor We extend our sympathy and condolences to the family of Harold Hardiek, who was buried from St. Francis Church this past Friday, 23 March. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. Sister Death has embraced 11 members of our parish since the first of the year! Happy Palm Sunday! We begin the celebration of the holy week of the year by recalling the entrance of our Lord into Jerusalem. We note how fickle the people are making him a king, singing Hosanna on one day, and a couple days later we hear their screams crucify him, crucify him. Lent concludes with the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday. You owe it to yourself (and your family) to come and participate in the liturgies of the Sacred Triduum the holy three days it s like one grand liturgy: Holy Thursday through Good Friday to the Easter Vigil. During the Easter Vigil, we will baptize two people and two people will make their profession of faith. We welcome them to our faith family. White smoke! Yes, we at St. Francis Parish saw white smoke on Thursday evening, 15 March, when the parish council discerned that Karen Runde would be our next Chair of this group of parish leaders. Congratulations, Karen. The Spirit will guide you and lead you! Thank you for being open to receive this grace. Scott Brumleve will serve on the stewardship committee, which is going to be including more areas, while Jerry Runde will work with the cemetery people, and Tom Uthell will serve on the liturgy committee. In last week s bulletin I thanked the members retiring from their service to the parish, and I again thank Steve Kroeger, Lois Meinhart and Sharon Waldhoff for their 3 years of dedication. Moving to more mundane concerns, I remind you that the parish now has the ability for the parishioners to contribute their tithe or church support electronically. Many have asked for this, and close to 40 people are presently signed up. Please consider electronic giving. The obvious benefit for the parish is that your contribution continues to come to the church even when you are absent vacation, camping, visiting out of town families. I believe the study says that regular and consistent church goers and givers are absent 15 Sundays a year. If you haven t filled out your parish survey yet, please consider doing that soon. This is something that can easily be put aside, and you know how that goes out of sight is out of mind. We really need your feedback. It s a good opportunity for you to let the parish staff know your ideas and suggestions. What are you doing from the 8 th of November to the 16 th this year? If you have never been to Rome and Assisi, this could be the opportunity for you to make this trip. You don t have to worry about flights, hotels, meals, tours it s all part of the package. There are a couple additional options like if you want to visit Naples and Pompeii on a free day. Thank you to all who offered prayer and sacrifice in any way during this 40 Days for Life, which ends today. "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" -- Revelation 21:4-5 When we face the destructive power of death, we are to think of the day when death is swallowed up in victory. Father, you are the God of hope. Keep our hearts focused on heaven, and diligent in the labors of earth. As we struggle against the culture of death, root our souls in the assurance of victory. 4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 Religious Education News GRADE SCHOOL- Grade 6 will be doing the Seder (Passover) meal in the cafeteria on Tuesday, March 27, from 7:55 to 8:35. Parishioners are invited to be observers if they wish. Please use the west ramp entrance if planning to attend. Grade 1 children will be doing the Seder meal in the east basement area on Tuesday also. Thanks to all the catechists for providing the items used during the Seder meals. Children in grades 3 and 4 will be carrying up their Lenten mission box donations at Mass on Tuesday and children in grades 1 and 2 will be carrying up their Lenten Mission box donations on Wednesday. The contributions will be forwarded to the Franciscan Mission Office for Fr. Damien Isabell for his mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Thanks to parents for helping the children be made aware of the needs of young people in other parts of the world and how their Lenten sacrifices and contributions can help better people s lives. There are no school and religion classes on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Monday March 29, 30 and April 2. May all families participate in the holy week services and enjoy the Easter holidays! PRE-KDGN. Thanks to all the catechists, student aides, and children for participating in the closing activities last Sunday. Children received copies of the upcoming Sunday Promise magazines, which they can enjoy working on at home. Easter Day of Fun The youth of the parish invite you to bring your kids, ages 4-11 years, to the Easter Day of Fun held Saturday, March 31 from 8:30 am - 10:30 am! Registration forms are online at the parish website and available at the entrances of church! We will play games, have snacks, hear the Easter story as well as have an Easter egg grab! High school and junior high students are asked to sign up to help run this awesome day of fun! Youth Notes Youth Council meetings will be held on April 14 for High School and April 15 for Jr. High! We are moving it back a couple of weeks because of Easter! See you there! Any Jr. High or HS student who would like to help with the Easter Day of Fun is encouraged to sign up with the HS religious ed office at We will have games, snacks, crafts and LOTS of little folks to help shepherd! Helpers and participants each need permission slips for the day. Permission slips can be found online at the parish website. Junior High There are no classes this Wednesday of holy week. Students are asked to join their families and the parish community in the Triduum services. High School No high school religious ed classes on March 28 during Holy Week. Please attend the Triduum services with your family. Seniors and those heading to CHWC and who will be 18 or over - we will have Protecting God s Children for your class on April 28. Buy yours this week during business hours at Niebrugge Financial or on Saturday at the parish office from 9-11 am! Annual Lion s Club Easter Egg Hunt The Teutopolis Lion s Club will be hosting the 79th Annual Easter Egg Hunt to be held on Easter Sunday, April 1st at 1:00 pm at the Teutopolis Park (by the Junior High). Children ages pre-school through 4th grade will be able to hunt. Prizes for various age groups will be awarded.

Hardware from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. Please bring bake sale items to Weber Bros on Saturday morning or to St. Clare Hall on Friday from noon to 4:00 pm. Be sure to come and purchase the best bake sale items in the county. Damien is also trying to help little girls who are on the streets, trying to get them to stay in the local home for girls, but they are not fed well there, and the woman police believes in beating them into submission. This event supports heart testing for local student-athletes. St. Thomas Garage Sale will be held on April 26 and 27, 8:00 am - 6:00 pm; and April 28, 8:00-11:00 am, at the St. Thomas Parish Center, Newton. Baby Shower for 'Small Victories Pregnancy Outreach.' A fundraiser to support Small Victories Pregnancy Outreach to assist the sidewalk counselors and nurse working to save babies at the 'Hope' abortion clinic in Granite City, IL will be held from Divine Mercy Sunday, April 8 through April 22. Currently the Illinois HB 40 law has increased abortions from 90 to 250 babies killed per week at this abortion clinic. Please mail donations to the 501c3 non-profit 'Small Victories Pregnancy Outreach' PO Box 143, Highland IL Needed are Walmart gift cards for the staff to purchase pregnancy and baby necessities to give to the mothers. Most needed are prayers and monetary donations to keep the mobile pregnancy crisis van and ultrasound machine in operation. The Teutopolis Park District is placing the sesquicentennial building up for sale. The building is located on the west side of the Teutopolis Mini-Park. Its dimensions are approximately 18' x 24'. Interested parties (serious inquiries only) may contact the park district's groundskeeper, Aaron Wellbaum ( ), to make an appointment to view the inside of the building. Sealed bids must be mailed to Teutopolis Park District, P.O. Box 336, Teutopolis, IL and postmarked on or before April 30, The highest bidder will be the new owner of the building. The new owner will be responsible for moving the building and for any damages that occur while moving it. Removal from the Mini-Park must be coordinated with St. Francis of Assisi church.
