2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor I Will Go to the Altar of God, #2 Centering on Jesus In Revelation 22:13 we read: I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. For Christians, the life of faith begins and ends with Jesus. Br. Bill Short, OFM, a renowned Franciscan author and lecturer, reminds us that, for Franciscans, Jesus also stands squarely in the center of our lives. The crucifix can be looked at as a symbol of that centrality. One could see, for instance, that the cross points to the four cardinal directions north, south, east, and west. Jesus hangs in the middle. Others see the cross as planted in earth but reaching toward heaven. Again, Jesus as Mediator between God and humankind, is situated in the middle. Much is being written these days about intentional discipleship. In a nutshell, that term refers to people who make a conscious effort to keep Jesus at the center of their lives, allowing the Savior to guide their thoughts, words, and actions. Just having celebrated Christmas, we remind ourselves that Jesus was incarnated in order to make himself accessible to us. Jesus is present in prayer, in Scripture, and in the promptings of the Holy Spirit. As precious as those gifts are, Jesus makes himself even more available: he gives himself to us in the Eucharist, allowing us to share the fullness of his life under the forms of bread and wine. The General Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, issued by the Second Vatican Council, reminds us that the Eucharist is the source and summit of our life as believers. Reflection for the Presentation of the Lord Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. Luke 2:34-35 When Mary and Joseph brought baby Jesus to the temple for his presentation and consecration, a devout man named Simeon proclaimed big things about the life of their son. As an ominous aside, he told Mary that she would be pierced with a sword. That isn t quite the fortune a sweet young mother wants to hear. Yet Mary accepted her fate, just as gracefully as she did when she learned she was pregnant. And her acceptance reminds us today that love is an honor and a privilege and that it comes with a price. When we love deeply, we make ourselves vulnerable to deep pain. And this is the finest pain of all, a sacrifice of the highest order. Taste of T-Town THANKS! Thanks to all who participated in our fundraising event! We had a recordbreaking crowd! The funds raised will help our students going on the mission trip this summer. Thanks also to the First National Bank of Dieterich for sponsoring the event. We appreciate you all! Rosary Vigil at Effingham Planned Parenthood facility EVERY TUESDAY, 12:00-4:00 pm (weather permitting). Today we should be encouraged that our efforts have not been in vain. Abortion clinics are closing in record numbers due to the tireless work of men, women and young people all across the nation. America is beginning to reject abortion, and that is evidenced in closed clinics and historically low abortion numbers. When abortion clinics close, lives are saved (Operation Rescue). Members of the Effingham County Right to Life want to thank the Franciscan Friars and St. Francis Parishioners for the use of the Grade School Auditorium for their 42nd Annual RTL Breakfast. Religious Education News GRADE SCHOOL- Monday morning Grades 3 through 6 will assemble in church for blessing of throats within a prayer service. Grades 1 and 2 will assemble in the East open area for blessing of throats. Monday is the feast day of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and Tuesday is the feast of St. Blaise, intercessor for illnesses of the throat. Grade 5 will be introduced to the CD of A poetry and essay contest, using the themes of Love Your Neighbor as Yourself and Be a Good Neighbor. Those wishing to submit an entry must do so by Friday, February 20. Grade 6 Valentine Mission Bake Sale takes place on February 12. Grade 6 students received notes asking for volunteers for the decorated cake raffles. Please return this information by Wednesday, February 4. Proceeds of this sale go toward the education of the neediest children of families in the Southern part of India-- mission project supported by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Japan and in the Central-Pacific( St. Louis) province-- and the Franciscan Missionary projects. God bless all who help in any way with the mission projects! PRE-KDGN. Sunday morning religion class will focus on Jesus bringing His Light to others especially by curing the man with an unclean spirit. Children will be learning some love songs of how God loves them and how they can love others. JUNIOR HIGH Grade 7 will focus on Lesson 4: Egypt, The Exodus, Joshua and the Judges. Grade 8 will focus on Theology of the Body for Middle Schoolers How I Should Act. Youth Notes: The Jr. High Valentines Dance is set for February 13 from 7 10 pm in the TGS Gym. Permission slips will be available at religion class next Wednesday! Teen Center will be open February 6 from 7 10 pm. Chaperons are Scott & Tina Brumleve, Shannon Nosbisch, and Keri Will. Youth Councils are being rescheduled from February 1 to February 8 because of Super Bowl. Junior High meets at 6:30 pm. High School meets at 7:30 pm in the Teen Center.

5 February 1, th Sunday in Ordinary Time page 5 Father Daughter Dance. Dads and their daughters are invited to the Father Daughter Dance on Sunday, February 15, from 3 5 pm at TGS Gym. We ll have dancing, games, snacks, and pictures. Cost is $20 per couple in advance. Have more than one daughter? No problem! Additional daughter tickets can be purchased for $5. Tickets are available at the parish office. Come enjoy the special bond of dads and daughters! Any adults or high school students who would like to help at this event are encouraged to call the high school religious ed office. Newman Breakfast today, February 1st, from 7:00am to noon at the Teutopolis K of C Hall. All you can eat whole hog sausage, scrambled and fried eggs, pancakes and hash browns will be served. Also, crafts and baked goods will be available. All proceeds go the Newman fund. Thank you for supporting this worthwhile cause. KC Friday night buffet starts February 6 and goes through April 10 at the Teutopolis K of C Hall meeting room. Fish and chicken will be served until Lent. During Lent fish is the main entrée. Bring the family, and enjoy your supper at the K C Hall. K of C Initiation will be held March 1st. The German Dinner is back! On February 8th at 12:00 noon, the German Dinner will be held at the K of C Hall in Teutopolis. All members, age 55 and older, of Teutopolis Council 2874, are invited to this gala affair. The members, the widows of members, and the wives or sweethearts of members are invited. Members who can donate wine, please bring it to the K C Hall prior to the event. Doors open at 11:30. German Dinner is at noon. Nunsense! Come and enjoy Dinner and the musical, "Nunsense" on February 21st and 22nd at the TGS Gym (aka: Father Vitus Theatre). Times for the event: Saturday: February 21st: Doors open at 6:15, Meal at 6:45, and show begins at 7:45. Sunday:February 22nd: Doors open at 5:00, Meal at 5:30, and show begins at 6:30. Sunday, February 8, annual breakfast at St. Rose Catholic Church, Montrose. Serving from 7:00am 12:00. Whole hog sausage, ham, pancakes, eggs, rolls, coffee, juice and milk will be served. There will be a country store and quilt raffle and mystery boxes. Prices are $6 for a large plate and $4 for a small plate. Everyone is welcome. Mardi Gras Parish Mission Be Open to be held at St. Charles Borromeo, 921 Madison Ave. in Charleston, at 7:00pm each evening February The schedule: Wednesday, Feb. 11 Fr. Seth Brown will speak on healing, and the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be offered. Thursday, Feb. 12 Fr. Steve Thompson will focus on healing, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered. Friday, Feb. 13 Mass will be celebrated with Deacon Marty Smith preaching the homily. Refreshments will follow in the hall each night. Everyone is welcome. What a great way to prepare for your Lenten journey! Chiara Center in Springfield is sponsoring a weekend retreat celebrating recovery, on February Anyone working a recovery program or a family member is welcome. There will be special breakout sessions for couples. Celebrate how God turns broken pieces into masterpieces. Registration deadline is February 11. Contact or visit their website chiaracenter.org for pricing and a registration form Sunday, February 22, Swine and Dine breakfast at Sigel, St. Michael School gym. Serving from 7:00am 12:00. Prices are $6 for a large plate and $4 for a small plate. Menu includes whole hog sausage, eggs, pancakes, homemade rolls, breads, orange juice, coffee and milk. All proceeds benefit the school. There will be a Country Store with baked and craft items, raffle items and mystery boxes for the children. Everyone is welcome. St. Isidore Youth Ministry Soup Supper and Eucharistic Day of Prayer will be held at St. Aloysius Church on Sunday, February 22. The Eucharistic Day of Prayer will be held after 8:00am Mass and continue throughout the day with a closing benediction at 6:30pm. Prayer services for a variety of intentions will be held. Please plan to come and spend time with our Lord asking for the grace to carry our daily cross, which has been given to us, our neighbors, friends, relatives and community. Soup, sandwiches and dessert will be served from 4:00-7:00pm in St. Aloysius Hall. There will also be a basket raffle.

6 February 1, th Sunday in Ordinary Time page 6 Minutes from the Parish Council Meeting on January 15, 2015 Present: Fr. John, Fr. Thinh, Dan Beckman, Duane Kremer, Mike Tipton, Tony Pals, Carrie Copple, Sandy Gillespie, Mick Deters and Denise Will. The meeting opened with prayer. Minutes from the Nov 21, 2014 meeting were reviewed and approved. The following committee reports were given: Finance: Duane Kremer The Finance original meeting has been rescheduled. Fr. John noted that the parish received several stock transfers over the Christmas Season. These stocks have been sold and the cash received. Building and Grounds Bernie Hartke Recently a car ran into the brick wall by the museum entrance. It was discussed whether or not the hole should be fixed or remove the damaged part of the wall. We will do a follow-up with Ron Ruholl. The town has offered to vacate part of the cemetery road that runs north and south in front of the cross. It is currently owned by the town. Ron Ruholl and Greg Hess will talk further, as well as the Board, to see if that would be of a benefit to the church. The Habing parking lot on the west side of the church is owned by the church. Ron is working with Greg Hess to have that lot repaired. Liturgy Carrie Copple All Christmas Masses were well attended and praised by the parishioners. The 4 PM Mass was again most heavily attended. On Thursday, Jan 22, there will be a Right to Life Mass at 7 PM. February 3 is the feast of St. Blase. We will be blessing throats on Monday, February 2, for grades 3-6 in church. Grades 1 & 2 will be blessed at school. Ash Wednesday is February 18. Old palms will be collected on Feb. 8 and 15. There will be a basket in front of the altar to put the palms. The Mass schedule for Ash Wednesday will be 6 AM, 8:05, 12:10 & 7 PM. There will also be a 6:15 AM Mass each morning during Lent. Stations of the Cross will be on Fridays during Lent at 7 PM. Religious Ed Sandy Gillespie Sr. Ann Grade 2 will be receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation on Sat., Feb. 21 at 9 and 10:30. Grade 2 will also be making their First Communion on Sun., May 3. Grade 4 held a winter bake sale on Jan. 15 and raised around $1200. Proceeds will go to the Notre Dame Mission Ebola Ministry project in Sierra Leone, and some of the proceeds will go to the Franciscan Missionary Union. The Diocesan Cumulative Knowledge Testing will take place for Gr. 8 on Jan. 14 and Grade 5 on Feb High School Religion started back up on Jan. 14. Catholic Heart Work Camp will again be hosting the Taste of T-Town on Sat., Jan. 24, from 5-8 PM at the K of C Hall. Teutopolis State Bank is also sponsoring a dinner theater on Feb 21 & 22 at the TGS gym. The production will be Nunsense. These proceeds will also go towards the Catholic Heart Work Camp. There will be an ice skating trip coming up for Jr. High and High School students to the U of I in Champaign. Adult Education- Sr. Pierre Our parish mission is scheduled for April Fr Johnpaul will again be our speaker. Bible studies will be starting soon. Thurs. mornings will be: Part 1, Extraordinary Women of the Bible and on Monday evenings, Part 1, Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians. Protecting God s Children classes will be provided on Tuesdays in the month of March. Stewardship Denise Will We have 4 families yet to receive a welcome package. Social Concerns Mike Tipton Committee will meet on Mon., January 19. They are trying to narrow down the social cause that we would like to help. Pastor s Report 70% of our goal for the Catholic Service Appeal has been met. We have 1154 families of which only 264 have given. A monthly event for our senior parishioners has been discussed, and we hope to do a luncheon or small gathering with snacks once a month after the 12:10 Mass. The next meeting will be held Thursday, February 19, 7:00 PM
