2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor Right to Life is the theme for the week, beginning with the Right to Life Breakfast last Sunday. I am sure some of you have been helping with this breakfast for many years, and we pray for the day when it will not be necessary to raise funds for fighting abortion. On Monday evening we had Mass, and the special intention was for the legal protection of unborn children. People came from other parishes as well as our own in order to pray for this worthwhile cause. Wednesday evening 4 buses left the parking lot of the Effingham Knights of Columbus. Our parishioners joined thousands of others as they prayed at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington Thursday evening, attended another Mass Friday morning with our Bishop Thomas John Paprocki, and then after the rally, they marched in protest to the Supreme Court building. Hopefully everyone made it back home safely on Saturday morning. This Sunday, 29 January, we are hosting the Pre-Cana Seminar, and 33 engaged couples will be spending the day here listening to couples share their faith and some of their experiences with marriage. The day concludes with Mass in the afternoon. The couples presenting the workshop do an excellent service for the engaged couples, who come from the area. Getting married is the largest decision a person makes in his or her life. So we are grateful to the couples who make this program so successful. Next Sunday, 5 February, is the famous Newman Breakfast in our local Knights of Columbus Hall. It would be an interesting number to know, i.e., how many college students experienced a deepening in their faith life because of participating in the Newman ministry when they left home and went to college. It would be a high number, I m sure. Just a couple weeks away is our dinner show entertainment in order to raise funds for Catholic Heart Work Camp. Bishop Coyne, from the diocese of Burlington, Vermont, gave the retreat to close to 45 Navy chaplains in North Palm Beach. 22 of the chaplains are active duty. While I was in Florida for the retreat, I visited a family I met in Puerto Rico when we both had orders to serve there. I left that island in 1995, and we haven t seen each other since. Bernie has logged 19,000 hours flying jets in the Navy and for United Air Lines! Also, I attended a wedding in Jacksonville. On to Lakeland, FL where I stayed with a couple whom I haven t seen in over 17 years. The husband and father served in 7 submarines over his career! Then I spent a few days with parishioners from St. Francis, who winter in Florida, just south of Tampa. Had a wonderful time. On the way home from retreat, I stayed a couple days in Georgia, where Willie Jansen works with the FOCUS program. This is probably more than you really wanted to know about my absence! ASSISI FOR AFRICA: Fr. Damien writes about following St. Francis love for the poor, Francis approach to others was maternal. He had told the brothers that if a mother loves the child of her body, we must love all the more the children of the Holy Spirit, our brothers and sisters. The brothers (St. Francis followers) would draw robbers to God s love by becoming their mothers. They did not serve them leftovers; they went to look for good food. During their meals, they engaged in conversation with them, attempting to reach in them all that was good. Through the mercy and grace of God, the robbers listened and fulfilled the brothers requests one by one. The God whom we adore was at work in the love and joy of the brothers. He continues to do the same in us. Please pray for the children served by Fr. Damien and thank you for your continued generous donations. PRO-LIFE: Thanks to all who participated in the Rosary and Mass for the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children on Jan 23. Thank you to all who made the sacrifice to attend the March for Life on Jan 27, as well as all the organizations who donated to the trip and those who offered prayers for safe travels. Parish Council Nominations are due today. INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK In today's competitive world, many people do not see justice and humility as virtues to acquire. Yet Jesus makes a big point of giving us the beatitudes as the blueprint to follow for our lives. Being poor in spirit, meek, thirsting and hungering for righteousness, being merciful, clean of heart, and peacemakers are all hallmarks of the true disciple and a child of God. After doing all these things, however, the true disciple must be prepared for persecution. Are you really ready to become a true disciple? 4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 Religious Education And Youth Notes GRADE SCHOOL Grades 3 and 4 children will have a group rosary in church on Monday morning, January 30 those who volunteered will be leading prayers over the microphone individually. All parents and parishioners are invited to attend and to join with the children in thanksgiving for the gift of life, for protection of the unborn, and for legislators to formulate legislation which will support all human life from its beginning to natural death. The Luminous Mysteries will be used. Grades 5 and 6 students will participate in the group rosary on Thursday, February 23 for the above intentions. Grade 2 children preparing for First Reconciliation should have returned the information sheet the last sheet in the packet this past Friday. If these forms are still out, please fill in and return as soon as possible this week. Thanks. Children will be viewing the confessionals on Thursday, February 16, and First Reconciliation takes place on Saturday morning, February 18 9:00-10:00 ( A-M); l0:30-11:30 (N-Z). PRE-KDGN Sunday morning religion classes take place in the Museum Dining Room during the l0:30 Mass. JUNIOR HIGH The Diocesan Religious Knowledge Test was administered last Wednesday, January 25, to Grade 8 students. If any student missed class because of sickness or an emergency, they will be called and asked to take the test on a Sunday morning or before class begins on the next week. Answer sheets need to be sent to the Scoring Facility by Wednesday, February 15. Thanks for your help and cooperation! **Calling all Dads, Uncles, Grandfathers, & Godfathers... Get ready to take your favorite girl (or girls) to the Father Daughter Dance! It will be held Saturday, February 11th from 2:00-4:30pm in the TGS auditorium. Tickets will be $25 per father-daughter pair and $5 for each additional daughter. Ticket sales will begin this weekend after all Masses and in the parish office throughout the week until February 9th or sold out. ***All tickets will be sold in ADVANCE ONLY and are limited.. Only 150 available!*** St. Francis Parish is sponsoring the event, however, all religious denominations are welcome to attend. **Proceeds to this fun event will go toward Elizabeth Weidner and her family.** YOUTH NOTES Jr. High Valentines Dance is set for February 10 from 7:00-10:00 pm at the TGS Gym! Tickets are $5 and available at the door. Permission forms are available online at stfrancischurch.com or at religion class. All students regardless of parish or faith tradition are welcome to this event, but must have a signed permission form to attend. We also will have Secret Cupids - or secret Valentines - that can be sent throughout the night for $.50. It's going to be a fun night! Let's go Ice Skating on February 11! Jr. High and High School students are invited to go ice skating at the U of I ice skating arena followed by Mass and then pizza at the Newman Center! We will leave the parking lot at 11:45 am and return at 9 pm. All students are invited to go on this outing! Permission forms are available at the entrances of church or online at stfrancischurch.com and are due back by February 5 so we can be sure to have enough drivers. Teen Center is open on February 3 for Junior High Students from 7 pm - 10 pm. This is a 9 week course on budgeting and getting out of debt, beginning February 12 at 5 pm in the museum dining room. Menu will include whole hog sausage, scrambled and fried eggs, pancakes and hash browns. Also, raffle chances, baked goods and crafts will be available for purchase. Over 40 Newman Centers throughout the State of Illinois offer college students a chance to gather and practice the Catholic faith. All proceeds from the breakfast go to the Newman fund. This "coming of age" story involves the 1950s Catholic education of eight Chicago children, following them from the start of elementary school through the senior prom and beyond.
