I had a wonderful conversation with a parishioner the other day that began when she said to me, Father, I have to tell you that I am having a a great Lent! I was so happy to hear that, and it made me ask myself, What about other people? I wonder how their Lent is going. My prayer is that your Lent is going well also, that you are finding yourself drawing closer to God and being drawn in by God s love. I read something the other day by a great theologian named Ronald Rolheiser, OMI. He wrote an excellent book called The Holy Longing which invites us to reflect deeply on the belief we all have that God dwells within us and is always at work within us. And the reason why we fast and pray and give alms during Lent is so that we can remember that indwelling a little more clearly. Listen to this great quote: Some mystics taught that the human soul comes from God and that the last thing that God does before putting a soul into the body is to kiss the soul. The soul then goes through life always dimly remembering that kiss, a kiss of perfect love, and the soul measures all of life s loves and kisses against that primordial perfect kiss. I want to thank you all for this great Lent that we re all having here at St. Francis. Thank you for your participation in all the activities the talks and classes and different prayer services. And thanks especially for the very generous donations and extra collections that you have supported. I am really looking forward to Holy Week next week! May God bless you and everyone you love. CD of A Members Sunday, March 20, 10:30: Joe Deters Year of Mercy & Care of Our Common Home (Laudato Si) In a conversation a few years back a farmer was justifying his use of fertilizers and toxic weed killers. He told me that Mother Earth comes back from that practice and rejuvenates herself. My question to him was how much poison can one body take before it no longer functions? Our insert today speaks to global warming, specifically in how we use transportation. In many countries world-wide we see people walking around wearing face masks to protect themselves from deadly fumes given off by unchecked industry and cars. Some of creation that I have experienced first hand regarding global warming are: fisheries polluted, increased desert sands, fresh water being overtaken by algae, birds by the dozens found dead. Think about the effects of global warming you have experienced or are experiencing today. As a responsible Catholic Christian how can you change some of it? Q. Lent always seems to help me renew my relationship with God and strengthen my religious practice. Do you have any suggestions as to what I could do to achieve that the rest of the year? A. The obvious answer may seem to be to do whatever you do during Lent all year round. But part of the power of Lent is that we focus as a community on renewing our faith and preparing for Easter. Our Lenten practices have a purpose and a goal. Therein lies the secret. When we focus our efforts on one virtue, or try to change one bad habit, or seek to deepen our understanding of one aspect of faith, we focus our efforts and give our full attention to what we are trying to accomplish. We tend to be more successful achieving our goals. More importantly, it has a ripple effect in our lives: one thing changes or is added to the spiritual mix of our lives and many aspects are changed. All too often we leave our spiritual growth to chance and the practice of faith to habit, and then wonder why we have no sense of growth or progress. Think of it in terms of exercise. We walk, lift weights, bend and stretch to attain the maximum benefit from what we do. In addition, to keep those benefits, we eat healthful food and get enough vitamins and rest. Spirituality requires the same kind of attention: we pray, fast, read the Bible, receive sacraments, and do charitable work to maximize the benefits of practicing faith. Your service makes our liturgies special and complete!!! Please remember that if you are on the March schedule for either 6:30, 8:30 or 10:30 am Masses, then you are on for Easter Sunday at those times. If you can t make it, please find a substitute. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE Please continue your prayers and fasting for life, and thanks to all who participated in our Eucharistic Day of Prayer for Life this past Tuesday. So far during this international campaign, 265 babies (and their mothers, of course) have been spared from abortion that we know of! He emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, He humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross. Phil 2:7-8 PRAYER O Lord, help us follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Let us humbly and diligently work to restore legal protection for the unborn, the disabled, the medically dependent and all innocent children of God whose lives are threatened. Amen. The Prayer Vigil for Life will be held Monday, March 21st at Sacred Heart, Lillyville. Rosary is at 6 pm; Mass begins at 6:30pm. Everyone is welcome. God Bless Those Serving our Country. Religious Education News GRADE SCHOOL Grade 2 First Communion Parent meetings take place this week in the museum dining room on Monday, March 14, and on Thursday, March 17, starting at 7:00 (to pick up materials) and ending at 8:15. Grades 3 and 4 children will be assembling in church for the Stations of the Cross on Monday, March 14, and Grades 5, 6 will be participating in the Stations on Thursday, March 17. All families and parishioners are invited and welcome to attend these Lenten prayer services at 8:05-8:35. (Grades 3, 4 Stations of the Cross take place on Monday, March 21, Monday of Holy Week.) Lenten Mission Boxes from the children in Grades 3 through 6 may be brought in this week. Two representatives from each classroom will be carrying these boxes up during their Masses on Tuesday and Friday of this week. Grades 1 and 2 children may bring in their boxes the week of March 21, and will carry these up at Mass on Wednesday, March 23. KDGN./PRESCHOOL classes meet for the final class this Sunday at 10:30 in the museum dining room, and prepare for the short singing presentation in church after the l0:30 Mass, followed by a reception for family and parishioners in St. Clare Hall. Thanks to the catechists and student aides who have given their services to help Christian children come to know Jesus. JUNIOR HIGH students will be participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, followed by the reading of the Passion from their Bibles. HIGH SCHOOL Senior Retreat is next weekend, March 19 & 20 at Lake Sara. Please keep our seniors in high school as well as the retreat team in prayer as we look for God in new ways! Any senior who is not signed up can do so by calling the high school religious ed office as soon as possible! Youth Notes: CHWC meeting is set for Tuesday, March 15 at 7 pm in the Museum Dining Room. We have your CHWC official registration forms and updates on finances, etc. Plus we have things to pray for! We ll see you there! Teen Center is open for Junior High on March 18 from 7:30 pm 10 pm. 5 March 13, th Sunday of Lent page 5 CCW March Meeting The March CCW meeting will be held Monday, March 14th, in St. Clare Hall at 7:00pm. Many CCW dues envelopes have not yet been turned in, please have them collected and turned in before this meeting. One of the discussion items will be the candidate for Our Lady of Good Counsel Award (which honors a woman of our parish who actively lives her Catholic Faith, displays her spirituality, and shares her time/talent with a cheerful attitude by doing acts of service and leadership towards her community and parish). Suggestions are welcome. Our guest speaker for the March meeting will be Shannon Nosbisch. She will be sharing information about the Effingham Area Alzheimer s Awareness group. This group provides education and support to all families, caregivers and persons with Alzheimer s and related dementia in Effingham County. Please come join us for an informational presentation and friendship. CCW Annual Easter Bake Sale Saturday, March 26, 2016 St. Francis CCW will be hosting their annual bake sale on Saturday March 26, 2016 at Weber Bros. Hardware in Teutopolis from 8am -noon. All ladies of the parish are asked to donate baked goods, colored eggs, candy, canned items (jellies, jams, fruits, salsa,) and or raffle items. These items may be dropped off at St. Clare Hall on Friday, March 25, between 3:00 and 5:00, or on Saturday morning at Weber Bros Hardware. Thank you in advance for your donations. Also, don t forget the CCW will have their famous bake sale going on at Weber s that day too! It s going to be a fun day! 55+ Get Your Green On! It s time for a St. Patrick s Day Party on March 17!! We start with Mass at noon, have lunch of grilled chicken & potatoes (that s Irish, right?!?) you re welcome to bring a dish to share for the potluck. We ll follow lunch up with a few Leprechaun Olympics games and then cards or dominoes for anyone who wants to play. Regardless of whether you are a card or game player, come hang out & enjoy some social time with your parish family! We d love to see you! Plus, it might be your LUCKY day! We will have prizes to give away! The annual Effingham County Right to Life Rummage Sale will be Thursday, March 17th, and Friday, March 18th, in the Effingham KC building. Please bring your useable items on Wednesday, March 16th, 6:00am to 5:00pm. PLEASE NOTE NO TV S, COM- PUTERS AND PRINTERS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Sale hours are 7:00am to 5:00pm on Thursday and 7:00am to 2:30pm on Friday. Volunteers needed on Wednesday and to pack leftovers on Friday at 2:00. Men would be greatly appreciated to move heavy cartons. $3.00 bag sale all day Friday. For more information please call RCIA The third and final week of our scrutinies we look to the raising of Lazarus to see what keeps us bound to our old ways, perhaps even sinful ways. Sometimes we let others bind us up; sometimes we bind ourselves and lay down as if we were dead. Dead to thirsty, hungry and homeless people. Dead to sick, suffering and imprisoned people. Dead to those who do not think like us. Dead to friends, neighbors, and family. It is Christ who wakes us up from this deadening sleep this day, next week, next month and one last time after we really die. Who needs me to be alive? What can I do for him, for her, for them? Thank you to the CHWC kids and their parents, Lisa Siemer, Karen Pruemer, and the KCs for all their effort for the Meals on Wheels soup supper. Enough money was raised to have meals 5 days a week for those in the Teutopolis community. Holy Humor...A Sunday school teacher was teaching her class about the difference between right and wrong. All right, children, let s take another example, she said. If I were to get into a man s pocket and take his billfold with all his money, what would I be? Little Harold raised his hand, and with a confident smile, he blurted out, You d be his wife!

Michael Perry, O.F.M, I wish to thank you for your wonderful reception of me at St. Francis and for your generous contributions to the new house of formation and studies the Order is building for the overflow of vocations in Southern and Eastern Africa. God has blessed the Church and the Franciscan Order with numerous young Franciscans who will go on to evangelize their countries with the Franciscan message of peace. May the good Lord bless you with the same abundance you have shown us. Fr. Mario DiCicco, The friars of the Franciscan Province of the Sacred Heart have served in this area since 1858, establishing their first headquarters in Teutopolis. Now the Franciscans invite you to join them in a project to celebrate the Year of Mercy. Remembering that one of the Corporal Works of Mercy is "to give drink to the thirsty," the friars are trying to raise $50K to dig fresh water wells in South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Your participation in this project could make a significant difference in the lives of people who have little access to clean water. Community News St. Isidore Parish Spring Breakfast will be today, March 13th, 7:00 am noon at St. Aloysius Hall, Bishop Creek. Whole hog sausage, ham, eggs, pancakes, rolls, coffee, milk and juice will be served. There will be a craft store, raffle items and mystery box stand. KC Fish Fry every Friday evening during Lent, 5:30-8 pm Sacred Heart Fish Fry will be held March 18, 4:30-7:30 pm at Sacred Heart Parish Center, Effingham. Gun Bash 2016 will be held on Saturday, March 19th. Happy hour at 6:00 followed by dinner and a gun raffle of 18 guns. Need not be present to win. This event will be held at the Teutopolis KC Hall. Please contact a Teutopolis Sportsbacker s member for tickets. Grove Township Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, March 19, at 1:00 pm. Open to all children 8 years of age and under.refreshments are available for purchase starting at noon. The community center is located at 5251 E. 1800th Ave., Montrose. The Father/Daughter Dance was held Sunday, March 6 at Teutopolis Grade School auditorium from noon to 3. The girls and their special guests enjoyed many games such as hooligan, cookies and hearts matching game, old maid, head bandz, and many more. Each girl and guest got their picture taken and went home with a frame to put the picture in. Special dances were held throughout the afternoon also. The guests feasted on Old Macs pizza, deer sausage, cheese, crackers, chips, cookies, and ice cream. All food was donated by generous people in the community. Memories were made that will last a lifetime! All proceeds were donated to Elizabeth Weidner and family. The following is a list of the girls who were winners of various door prizes.
