2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 Meditation 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time For seven seasons the Discovery Channel's highly rated show Deadliest Catch has wowed viewers with the real life tales of extreme fishermen in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska. They are after crab, with hopes for a big payday if they're successful. But the challenges of weather, luck, and crew can leave a captain without a large enough catch and finally without a job. Viewers can watch from the comfort of their homes, settled back in an easy chair while a crew fights ice, high seas, equipment failure, and frayed nerves. What is entertainment for those watching the television is daily life on the boat for those who work at sea. In the Gospel today, Jesus meets up with some fishermen. Simon and Andrew, James and John were casting their nets, probably not very far from shore. While the Sea of Galilee cannot compare to the Bering Sea, we know from the Gospels that storms can be violent on that body of water as well. Certainly at the time of Jesus fishing was as dangerous a job as it is today. So when Jesus called the two sets of brothers to follow him, were they looking for a safer job? Unlikely! Fishing for men and women is a lot more difficult than fishing for fish. The disciples answered the call to follow Jesus. It is a call that he continues to issue today. Whether in the priesthood, the religious life, the married state, or the committed single life, Jesus is asking people to follow him, not in a job, but in a way of life. Just as the crew of a boat on the Bering Sea doesn't punch out after eight hours, the life of a Christian is more than a full-time job. Following Jesus forms the basis for our lives. Parish Council Nominations It is time again to accept nominations of parishioners to serve a three-year term on the Parish Council. Doug Mette, Sandy Fisher and Jodie Pruemer have served the parish for three years and now their terms have expired. Therefore, we will be voting for 1 man and 2 women. All parishioners 18 years or older are invited to nominate parishioners who they feel are most qualified to share in the pastoral care and leadership of our parish. You can nominate people by sending names to Fr. Austin, dropping them off at the parish office or placing them in the collection basket. Simply write the name/s on a slip of paper along with their phone number or spouse s name. (A few people in the parish share the same name.) you may also nominate yourself. Deadline to turn in nominations is February 5th. Election will be held the third weekend in February. It was fantastic to see so many people come out to eat and socialize and support the Catholic Heart Work Campers! Children s Corner Grades 2-3 Religious Education News GRADE SCHOOL- Thanks to Grade 4 parents, children, catechists, teachers, all helpers for a successful Mission Bake Sale. The total amount raised and all raffle winners will be announced in next week s bulletin. God bless all who participated in this charitable endeavor! Grades 4 through 6 have received information about participating in the CD of A Contest on the themes Planting Seeds of Faith and Inspiring Others to Grow. These themes may be carried out in essay, poetry, art, computer art, (music & photography--grades 6, 7, 8). Final submission date of entries is Friday, February 10. Grade 5 students will be taking the Diocesan Knowledge and Attitude religion assessment test during class times this week. We will have the results of the test in April and will forward the individual scores to parents at that time. PRE/KDGN Classes take place during the l0:30 Mass in the grade school cafeteria area. JUNIOR HIGH Grade 8 girls will be viewing the Personal Safety video on Wednesday, January 25. Grade 7 continues to study the Bible Timeline. The Season of Giving Once More We ve just celebrated the holiday season Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year s, los Reyes Magos when so many people are extremely generous, opening their hearts and their wallets to help those in need. Many groups that assist the needy experience a kind of charitable withdrawal after the holidays, even though there is still a great need to help. Food pantries, blood banks, and homeless shelters have special needs in the winter months, especially in January and February when donations are scarce. Even though you may have contributed at Christmas, your commitment to one small action each month would help tremendously. Contribute an item to the food pantry; or call to donate blood this month; or donate a toiletry to the shelter. If each of us does just one thing, many will be helped.
