3 FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora This weekend our Holy Name School presents Fright Fest 2014, our annual Halloween Festival, which is a yearly fundraising event for the school. The Fright Fest is not about being frightened in order to enjoy the event. There are fun-filled activities and games that do not involve being scared. Are we promoting the evil spirits by events and activities like these, or by wearing scary costumes on Halloween? Let s take a little perspective. A lack of understanding of the background or history will always lead to an incorrect conclusion and outcome. But let s get to the root first. Pope Gregory III (d.741) moved all Saints Day from May 13 th to November 1 st to coincide with the dedication of a new cathedral. Of course the evening vigil mass was celebrated on October 31 st, hence All Hallows Eve or Hallowe en. So, Halloween is from two words: Hallow means Holy and een, a contraction of evening or eve. Halloween means Eve of the Holy or the evening before the celebration of something holy and we always look at Halloween as literally, a religious event. Later on, the feast of All Souls was added to include remembering the departed souls. Centuries later, the costumes reminding us of our mortality and then the trick or treat developed as a part of the celebration. The trick or treating, or guising, traditions, beginning in the Middle-Ages, children and sometimes poor adults would dress up in the aforementioned costumes and go around door to door during Hallowmas begging for food or money in exchange for songs and prayers, often said on behalf of the dead. Nowadays Halloween already has a scary connotation. Yet we can look beyond the scary costumes our kids are wearing or this generation seems to enjoy. We can rise above the spooky and frightening decorations and designs. We are not promoting evil spirits by wearing these Halloween costumes. We acknowledge their presence in the world. Being aware of the devil s existence calls us to be vigilant at all times and this awareness could be our weapon to battle against the power of evil. Our school kids will have their Halloween costume parade this coming Friday. But this Thursday at the 9AM Mass, they will also show us what Halloween means as a religious event or what is it supposed to be. Each class will have a representative dressed up like the saint of their choice. Our Religious Education students will do a similar procession of Saints at the Flanagan center on November 1 st. Halloween is not a day for evil but it is a day of the holy and even more, a day to become holy. A priest was preparing a dying man for his long journey into the dark night. Whispering firmly, the priest said, Denounce the devil! Let him know how little you think of his evil. The dying man said nothing. The priest repeated his order. Still the dying man said nothing. The priest asked, Why do you refuse to denounce the devil and his evil? The dying man said, Until I know exactly where I m heading, I don t think I ought to be aggravating NOBODY. So enjoy being an American, have fun on Halloween but remember its origins; it was a time to remember saints and loved ones, faithful souls who died. Denounce the devil at all times. You have the power in and with Jesus Christ. We can still have wholesome fun and yet teach our children the real meaning of Halloween. Answer from Gaudium et Spes: Human labor which is expended in the production and exchange of goods or in the performance of economic services is superior to the other elements of economic life, for the latter have only the nature of tools. This labor, whether it is engaged in independently or hired by someone else, comes immediately from the person, who as it were stamps the things of nature with his seal and subdues them to his will. By his labor a man ordinarily supports himself and his family, is joined to his fellow men and serves them, and can exercise genuine charity and be a partner in the work of bringing divine creation to perfection. Indeed, we hold that through labor offered to God man is associated with the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, Who conferred an eminent dignity on labor when at Nazareth He worked with His own hands. From this there follows for every man the duty of working faithfully and also the right to work. It is the duty of society, moreover, according to the circumstances prevailing in it, and in keeping with its role, to help the citizens to find sufficient employment. Finally, remuneration for labor is to be such that man may be furnished the means to cultivate worthily his own material, social, cultural, and spiritual life and that of his dependents, in view of the function and productiveness of each one, the conditions of the factory or workshop, and the common good. Sunday Readings The first reading is taken from the Book of Exodus 22: These verses cover the Israelites' duties toward strangers (non-israelites), widows and orphans and the poor in general. They are a practical application of the law of charity in their dealings with their neighbors. The second reading is from the first Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians 1:5c-10. St. Paul continues to praise the Thessalonians, not only for accepting the faith in difficult circumstances, but for the wonderful example their Christian life had already given to most of Greece. The Gospel is from Matthew 22: The Pharisees may not have had evil intentions when asking Christ the question as to the greatest commandment. But they have done us a good service by getting this crystal clear answer from him. In this answer he tells us that the man who loves God and neighbor fulfills all his obligations, and carries out all the duties that God's self-revelation in "the law and the prophets" imposes on him. God revealed himself to us in the Old Testament as our Creator and divine benefactor. He had no need of us, since he is infinitely perfect in himself, but out of his infinite goodness he wished to share his eternal kingdom of happiness with mankind and so he created us. That we should love such a benefactor and be grateful to him is not asking much of us; such love should surely be the spontaneous reaction of a rational being, and yet there were and there are many who fail to acknowledge any such obligation. No Christian, worthy of the name, can ever be among such thoughtless and thankless people. We have greater proofs of God's love for us than "the law and the prophets" gave to the Israelites. We have the added proofs of God's infinite interest in us brought to us by the Incarnation. We have been raised to the sublime status of adopted sons of God. Where Christians can, and too often do fail, is in their true love of neighbor. Yet Christ says that this commandment is like the first. Love of neighbor is an essential part of our obligations toward God. If we fail in this we fail in our love for God, for we refuse to carry out this sacred duty. If we do not recognize our neighbor as our brother, we do not recognize God as our Father and we do not love him. As St. John puts it: "Anyone who says 'I love God' and hates (does not love) his neighbor is a liar" (1 Jn.3: 20). Let each one of us ask himself today how seriously he takes this law of fraternal charity and how faithfully he carries it out. Not all of us may be able to give material help to a neighbor in need but the poorest of us can spare a kindly word, an encouraging word, for a neighbor weighed down with cares and troubles. All of us can pray for a neighbor who needs spiritual and temporal help. Most of us can deny ourselves some unnecessary luxuries in order to give a needed loaf of bread to a hungry fellowman, while those who have an abundance of this world's goods need not look far afield to find cases and causes worthy of their Christian charity. Remember that whatever spiritual or material help is given out of true charity to a neighbor in need, is given to God, and whatever is given to God is soundly invested in heaven, and heaven pays handsome dividends. -Excerpted from The Sunday Readings by Fr. HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS Halloween is an exciting time of year for kids, and to help ensure they have a safe holiday, here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). ALL DRESSED UP: Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame. Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-ortreat bags for greater visibility. Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes. When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant. If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child's costume, make sure it is not sharp or too long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips. > > > WHAT IS A PRIEST? By Father Thomas E. Langer Priests are mystery men. They come in assorted sizes, ages, weights and collars. They are found everywhere speeding along, perspiring over, walking by, kneeling on, praying over, laughing with, preaching to, teaching about, pardoning for, and playing baseball with. Little children run to them; teenagers marvel at them, aged folk turn to them; lay people treasure them; non-catholics stare at them; and Mary watches over them. A priest is Prudence in a T-shirt; Fortitude with a breviary in his hand; Justice on a ball diamond; and Temperance at any party. He is Faith with a blueprint; Hope with a sense of humor; and Charity with a golf club in hand. A priest may be anything from a contemplative monk in a monastery to a magazine editor on Wall Street, from a labor mediator to a TV personality, from a student to a professor. Formerly known as the boy-around-the-corner, he's a member of each family, yet belongs to none. He penetrates secrets, shares sorrows, heals wounds. He has the trust of a child, the kindness of a best friend, the sternness of a tight-rope walker, the authority of an encyclopedia, the versatility of a commando, and the salesmanship of a Fuller-Brush man. A priest is a humble creature a mystifying worker at all professions. His hours are the longest; his salary the smallest; his Boss the best! He likes good pastors, the smiles of children, a good sermon, a home-cooked meal, and the name "Father". A priest is all things to all men in the sight of God. He may be misquoted, mistaken and misunderstood, but he'll always forgive because he's a mediator; a peacemaker, a go-between heaven and earth. It's no wonder God loves him. He's a man standing at an altar, clothed in Holy clothes, who while being aware of his own nothingness speaks to God for us and to us for God. And although his greatest act is to offer sacrifice, his most consoling one is to say to me, "Go in peace Your sins are forgiven."
