2 PENTECOST SUNDAY June 12, 2011 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading In one Spirit we are baptized into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13). Gospel Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23). 3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora A young businessman had just started his own firm. He rented a beautiful office and had it furnished with antiques. Sitting there, he saw a man come in to the outer office. Wishing to appear the hot shot, the businessman picked up the phone and started to pretend he had a big deal working. He threw huge figures around and made giant commitments. Finally he hung up and asked the visitor, "Can I help you?" The man said, "Yeah, I've come to activate your phone lines." Have you ever experienced being so busy? I thought the Holy Week was the busiest time of the year for me. But last week was a very busy week for me. Although, it was my choice and it is because I wanted to do things right and do it the best way I know. I sincerely appreciate and give thanks to all those who in one way or another took part in making the celebration of my 25 th Priestly Anniversary a very successful one. This expression of gratitude also goes to those who supported the Philippine Madrigal Singers concert. Due to public demand, I am publishing the lyrics of the song which I sang on my anniversary, entitled Chosen in His Love. The lyrics were written by me, and the music by my friend and mentor Ryan Cayabyab. This song is included in my CD with the same title. Coda: All those times and all in His time All I know, I have been, is still and ever be Chosen in His Love. LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS! Preparation for the revised Roman Missal, third typical edition by Jerry Back To describe the Profession of Faith (i.e., the Nicene Creed) as substantive would be a gross understatement. It is packed with declarations all of which we hold to be true. So important is each line, Catechumens (those who are in preparation to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church) are excused beforehand because they are not yet ready to recite it; however, it is the time when we, as Catholics, put pen to paper. Question: In what way is the Nicene Creed an extended Amen? Answer from the Archdiocese of San Francisco: The time will come shortly when the Church will focus intently upon the revised translation of the Nicene (more correctly Niceno-Constantinopolitan) Creed. The Profession of Faith is one of the parts of the Mass where the choice of words is highly significant. Think about the dozens or hundreds or thousands of times you have professed the Faith with the assembly of the faithful. Do these times tend to be unremarkable moments, or can you trace a progression of your faith in time through the profession of Faith? Do you prefer the renewal of baptismal promises over the recitation of the Creed? Are you comforted or challenged (or both!) by the tenets of the Creed? Adolph Adam, an insightful theologian of the past century, called the Profession of Faith an extended Amen to the Liturgy of the Word. Coming after the proclamation of the Scriptures and the homily, it is the moment in which we begin to make a concrete response to the Word that has been spoken into our hearts REMEMBERING the WORD of GOD if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10: Our early Church bishops certainly made every line in the Nicene Creed count. The Church was expressing a multitude of truths, after all, in an era (the 4th century, to be exact) when there were many competing heresies. It reminds me of a phrase I recently heard Marcus Grodi say (host of EWTN s The Journey Home TV program): It s not true because the Catholic Church says it; the Catholic Church says it because it s true. That's what the 4th century Church needed to do back when it was writing the Nicene Creed, and what we, as members of the Catholic Church, do each week when we recite it back.

Holy Name of Jesus TREE OF LIFE Project The Holy Name Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves is located at the back of the Church. Donors can have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a muchneeded Capital Improvement Fund. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. (415) FEAST OF FAITH Liturgy: Work of the Spirit The Spirit of God who hovered over the waters at the dawn of creation the Holy Spirit who descended upon the disciples at Pentecost in ever-changing forms in the sound of a mighty wind or tongues of flame hovers also over our celebration of the liturgy, giving it life, making it real. It is the Spirit of God who draws us, gathering us together, Sunday after Sunday. It is the Spirit of God who called loudly to the inspired writers of the scriptures and who continues to whisper to us, revealing ever-new facets of God s word, granting insight just when we need it. It is by the Spirit s power that, when Christ s words are uttered by the priest, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. And it is surely the Spirit who inspires us that is, breathes in us when, sent forth from the assembly, we seek ways to serve our brothers and sisters, to allow the gospel to come to life in the world. GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT In one of the readings for this feast day Saint Paul refers to different kinds of spiritual gifts and different forms of service, but the same Lord (1 Corinthians 12:4). Yet spiritual gifts and service can be mismatched, causing difficulties for the person and the parish. Think of John, who had been head of the finance committee for over fifteen years. As an able businessman and head of his own company he dominated meetings, tightly controlled the agenda, and managed to push through pet projects by silencing and alienating other committee members. John is an example of someone with strong administrative gifts who needed a different challenge. Fortunately, John was tapped by the new pastor to begin a Welcome Home ministry for Catholics who have left the Church. This initiative is flourishing as John has discovered new energy and enthusiasm in matching his planning skills with hospitality. Then there is Alice, who was talked into teaching a parish religion class, although she had no training and didn t relate well to young teens. Alice did not really know her true abilities, so her service was reluctant and not likely to last. Another woman on the faith formation team sensed Alice s difficulties. They were chatting after class and Alice said she had just finished arranging the wedding of her third daughter. Her friend sympathized with all the hard work, and Alice said Oh no, I just love weddings! Alice now leads a team of parish wedding coordinators, who help couples through all the arrangements before and during their special day. She attracts new volunteers easily because she has such aptitude and love for the work. The Spirit is enriching the spiritual lives of John and Alice because their service matches their abilities, and their service, in turn, is adding new strength to their parish community. MARAMING SALAMAT PO THANK YOU VERY MUCH In Tagalog, the national language in the Philippines, the word bayanihan carries great significance. Originally it referred to neighbors carrying a hut or house to a new location. People now use it to describe an outpouring of community spirit-as people give their all to the common good, without expecting recognition or personal gain. A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped at Fr. Arnold s 25th Anniversary Mass and reception. The outpouring of the bayanihan spirit contributed to this very successful event. Thanks to all who stepped up and help. Special thanks to those who didn t sign up to volunteer yet stayed and helped in the arduous task of cleaning up after the party. We wish to congratulate our Pastor Fr. Arnold Zamora on his 25th Anniversary of Ordination and thank the Philippine Madrigal Singers for returning to Holy Name Parish. Instead of the regularly scheduled meeting on Friday, June 17, 2011 at the Flanagan Center, we will be celebrating Philippine Independence Day this year with a special screening of "The Gift of Barong... A Journey From Within" by documentary filmmaker Benito Bautista. The film is about two generations of Filipino-American surfers from the Bay Area who traveled to the Philippines to immerse in the culture, surf the islands and rediscover themselves. The gathering will start with a novena for the 6th day to San Lorenzo Ruiz at 6:30 pm, followed by the movie at 7:00 pm. Light snacks will be served Admission is free, but seats are limited.
