3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora It s the 90 th anniversary celebration of our parish this Sunday, with a concelebrated mass at 10:30AM presided by native San Franciscan Most Rev. Daniel Walsh, D.D., Bishop-Emeritus of Santa Rosa, and former auxiliary bishop of San Francisco. Let us rejoice and give thanks to God for all those years. We remember with deep gratitude then Archbishop of San Francisco, Edward Hanna, who in 1925 brought a young Fr. Richard Ryan from Ireland and began the creation of our parish. We sincerely thank Fr. Ryan and the past leaders of our parish. At this celebration we will also be commissioning the leaders of our parish who are members of our new reorganized Pastoral Council. They are Benito Capuyan, Chairperson; Paul Roscelli, Vice Chairperson; Roberta Beach, (Secretary) and Eris Rodriguez, Worship Committee; Mary Ann White and Nelson Lao, Faith Formation; Susan Logan and Valerie Toy, Outreach; Louis Chan and Julie Lozano, Socio-Cultural; Nicole Nguyen and Khail Adarne, Youth; Silver Cusi, Mike Sharpe and David Valle-Schwenk, Temporal and Safety. May all the saints, whose feast we also celebrate this Sunday, help us in our journey of faith along with these new members of our pastoral council. Monday, November 2 nd, is All Souls Day! May the souls of our dearly departed parishioners, relatives and friends, through the mercy of God rest in peace! Looking back at those 90 years of existence, this parish would be long dead if not for Christ. This parish would be dead without God s providence. This parish would be dead if there is no You in it. We are the Church. We are the mystical body of Christ. I thank you for being a part of Christ s body. Our parish will live on in Christ, with Christ and for Christ, in the Most Holy Name of Jesus. Have you heard the story about the Dead Church? A new pastor in a small Midwestern town spent the first four days making personal visits to each of the members, inviting them to come to his first service. The following Sunday, the church was all but empty. Accordingly, the pastor placed a notice in the local newspapers, stating that because the church was dead, it is everyone s duty to give it a decent Christian burial. The funeral would be held the following Sunday afternoon, the notice stated. Morbidly curious, a large crowd turned out for the funeral. In front of the pulpit, they saw a closed coffin, smothered with flowers. After the pastor delivered the eulogy, he opened the coffin and invited his congregation to come forward and pay their final respects to their dead church. Filled with curiosity as to what would represent the corpse of a dead church, all the people lined up to look into the coffin. Each mourner peeped into the coffin then quickly turned away with a guilty, sheepish look. In the coffin, tilted at the correct angle, was a large mirror! May our parish live on with you and with God! Happy 90 th Anniversary! ACE COLLECTION Today s Second Collection is the ACE Collection for the benefit of our Parish School. Your generosity is appreciated by our school children. HOLY NAME LADIES AID COLLECTION Next Sunday, members of the Holy Name Ladies Aid Society will be collecting for the needy in the Parish. Boxes are by the exits. Our HOLY NAME TREE OF LIFE located at the back of the Church is a bronze tree trunk with 400+ leaves. Donors can have their names or those they wish to honor engraved on the leaf. We suggest a maximum of 25 characters (including spaces) per line, limited to 5 lines. Leaf color choices are gold, silver or bronze. Custom imprinted leaves are $500 each + $25 imprinting The proceeds will go towards our Capital Improvement Fund. GRIEF AND CONSOLATION WEBSITE The website for grief and consolation, grief contains information on workshops, offerings and bereavement opportunities and contact persons for parishes. We also have the Nature of Grief Training Guide in English, Mandarin and Spanish. They will be ready by January so that we may begin to plan workshops. We hope to reach out to those who would like to see this in their first language. We are looking for persons who would work with me in identifying the next steps to see that this is done well both in quality education as well as communication. In January we are hosting A Morning of Prayer and Support for those persons who are grieving the loss of a loved one who either took their own life or died through an act of violence. If there are any of you familiar with this topic and wish to work with me in planning this gentle experience to comfort those who are grieving please contact me. 5 HOLY NAME SCHOOL Holy Name School newsletter October 27,2015 PRINCIPAL'S LETTER Dear Holy Name Families, What a wonderful Fright Fest we had last Saturday! Thank you to all of you for volunteering and helping to make it such a hit! This school would not be the same without our parents- thank you for always doing so much and for putting smiles on all the kids' faces. Thanks, Natalie Cirigliano, Principal It was quite the week for our students and their parents as we had three of our preschool families win our Fright Fest Raffle! Congratulations to them! Below please see what our preschoolers have been up to. Preschool-The preschool had a very busy week! On Monday, Ms. Marleen, a Red Fish parent planned a fun Halloween activity for the class. On Tuesday the Zoo Mobile visited both classrooms. The preschool children were introduced to a ferret, an opossum, an African hedgehog, a horned frog and a spider tortoise. The Red Fish students learned about the square shape and created square collages. They ended the week making squareshaped grilled cheese sandwiches! Last Monday, the Blue Fish students took a field trip to a Pumpkin Patch. They took a hay ride and enjoyed going through a hay maze. Throughout the week, the BF students made ghost chalk drawings, spider web crayon rubbings, Jack O' lanterns and witches. On Friday the Fire Department visited both classrooms and shared important facts about fire safety to the children, including, "Stop, Drop & Roll". The children had an opportunity to ring the fire bell and climb into a fire engine which they loved! Kindergarten- Kindergarten went on their first class field trip to Clancy's Pumpkin Patch where they were able to each get their own pumpkins to bring back to class and decorate. They also took a fun adventure on a hay ride. Students chose two class pumpkins to weigh and count how many seeds are inside. Kindergarten will also be baking pumpkin seeds and carving the pumpkins on Wednesday. Students were ableto experience the San Francisco transportation system by taking the N Judah street car to the pumpkin patch. Along this journey, they stopped at the community garden across the street to eat a snack while listening to a story on how pumpkins grow. First Grade- Last week our First Grade wrote about Bat Facts. They also made mummy footprints and wrote about what we would do if we were Frankenstein! First graders had reading and math assessments last week. They finished off the week making weather graphs. Second Grade- Last Monday the second graders put together their skeletons with the help of their 8th grade buddies. During the week the students completed chapter 2 in math and took the chapter 2 test. In Social Studies they finished unit 1 and completed the unit 1 test. The 2nd grader also took the chapter 4 test and unit 1 test in religion. During language arts the children wrote I Spy Halloween poems and finished their All About Me posters. On Friday the children walked to the West Sunset soccer field (our evacuation site) with their 8th grade buddies. Third Grade- 3rd graders started cursive!! They are learning the importance of handwriting strokes, spacing, slanting, size, and shape. They also went on their first fieldtrip to the Conservatory of Flowers to learn more about plant adaptations. The class is currently making a germination chart which shows the steps of how a seed can grow and develop. For social studies, the third graders identified and learned about California's 4 regions and how they relate to our community. They are looking at and analyzing maps a lot more, too. Fourth Grade- In 4th grade, students continued their math work of learning different algorithms for multi-digit multiplication. They also practice making connections between the text and themselves in reading class. In music, fourth grade learned all about the string family of instruments. As a connection to their history unit on the Spanish travels to and from California, the kids painted beautiful water color pieces of Spanish galleons. Fifth Grade- Fifth grade completed a very orderly evacuation walk to the nearby evacuation site. Students finished making "Jack-olantern" people which will be given to their kindergarten buddies. Fifth grade continues to work on their writing skills and are learning how to better incorporate mood into their writing. 6th grade- The sixth graders read a story called "Tuesday of the Other June" in which a young girl experiences bullying by another girl in her class. The 6th graders took a bullying survey to help them think about times they may have experienced a type of bullying themselves. This survey was used as a springboard to a class discussion, which was quite meaningful and, for some, emotional. The lesson was ended on this important topic by having each student design a Superhero Bully Stopper. In history class students used moon sand to shape geography and irrigation systems as they began studying their first ancient civilization of the year, the Sumerians. 7th grade- Seventh graders finished reading their class novel Where the Red Fern Grows. The students did a free write on how to build a trap to catch a raccoon and the tools needed for it. They also worked on vocabulary from the first 6 chapters of the book by defining words themselves. 8th grade: Eight graders continued reading their class novel The Giver. In addition to reading, students reviewed the literary concept of conflict and the how and why author's use this in their writing. Students learned that there are 4 types of conflicts that are used in novels. In religion class they used the life of St. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, to begin a discussion on issues that test the faith.
