3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora It was Christmas and suddenly it was over. Then came Holy Week and Easter and likewise quickly done. Easter, like Christmas, is not just a day but a season so we say. But even then, quicker than you know, it will be over and done. The day, the week, the month, and the season are quickly gone, but the year is still far from over and done. The Feast of the Divine Mercy that we celebrate this Sunday is a reminder that we are still in the Year of Mercy. Divine Mercy Sunday is always celebrated on the second Sunday of Easter. Sr. Faustina from Poland wrote in her diary that God s greatest attribute is His mercy. The church recognizes the importance of this attribute so much that it places the feast of the Divine Mercy on the Sunday right after Easter. This week right after we celebrated Christ s resurrection on Easter, I had three funerals for three of our parishioners: Odeon Briones (80), Guia Abellar (58) and Phyllis Anne Korn (91). There is no good age to die, only a good age to rise to a new life and live an eternal life. This is probably why a Funeral Mass is sometimes called the Mass of the Resurrection, because it leads to rising to new life. Now I realize how blessed they were to have their funeral services right after Easter. Eternal rest grant unto our departed parishioners, O Lord. Let us offer prayers for them and their bereaved families. Three dim guys died on Easter Sunday and went to Heaven. St. Peter greeted them at the Pearly Gates and told them that in order to enter Heaven each one had to answer a question correctly. If they gave the wrong answer, they would end up in Hell. St. Peter turned to the first guy and asked: What is Easter? The first guy replied That s when kids get dressed up in costumes and go door to door collecting Trick or Treat. No, stupid, said St. Peter. That s Halloween. You re down to Hell! St. Peter turned to the second guy and asked What is Easter? The second guy answered That s when the fat man in the red suit comes down the chimney and leaves gifts for everybody. No, you moron, said St. Peter. That s Christmas. Go down to Hell! St. Peter turned to the third guy and asked, in a very exasperated tone of voice, What is Easter? The third guy answered That s when Jesus rises out of his grave. And??? said St. Peter. And, if he sees his shadow there s another six weeks of winter! (Hmmm, of course, that s Groundhog Day!) Winter is over and done. Spring is here and it s a new month of April but there are more months to experience and share God s mercy! Gospel Reading John 20:19-31 Thomas believes because he sees Jesus. Background on the Gospel Reading Today's reading, from the Gospel of John, is proclaimed on the second Sunday of Easter in each of the three Sunday Lectionary cycles. This should alert us to the significance of the encounters with the resurrected Jesus described in this reading. This Gospel combines two scenes: Jesus' appearance to his disciples after his Resurrection and Jesus' dialogue with Thomas, the disciple who doubted. Part of the mystery of Jesus' Resurrection is that he appeared to his disciples not as a spirit but in bodily form. We do not know exactly what this form was like. Earlier in John's Gospel, when Mary of Magdala first encountered the risen Jesus, she did not recognize the figure standing before her until Jesus spoke her. In Luke's Gospel, the disciples walking on the road to Emmaus did not recognize Jesus until he broke bread with them. We know from readings such as today's that in his resurrected body, Jesus was no longer bound by space; he appeared to the disciples in spite of the locked door. And yet, on this resurrected body, the disciples could still observe the marks of his Crucifixion. In today's Gospel, Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of peace and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus also commissions his disciples to continue the work that he has begun. As Jesus was sent by God, so too does Jesus send his disciples. This continuity with Jesus' own mission is an essential element of the Church. Jesus grants the means to accomplish this mission when he gives his disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit binds us together as a community of faith and strengthens us to bear witness to Jesus' Resurrection. Jesus' words to his disciples also highlight the integral connection between the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Forgiveness and reconciliation are gifts to us from Jesus. With the grace of the Holy Spirit, we can share these with others. This is another essential aspect of what it means to be Christ's Church. The Church continues Jesus' ministry of forgiveness and reconciliation. Thomas, the disciple who doubts, represents the reality of the Church that comes after this first community of disciples. All but the first disciples of Jesus must believe without seeing. Like Thomas, we may doubt the news that Jesus, who was crucified and buried, appeared to his disciples. It is part of our human nature to seek hard evidence that the Jesus who appeared to the disciples after his death is, indeed, the same Jesus who was crucified. Thomas is given the opportunity to be our representative who obtains this evidence. He gives witness to us that the Jesus who was raised is the same Jesus who had died. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are among those who are blessed for we have not seen and yet have believed.

Alfred McBride, O.Praem. On the Second Sunday of Easter of the Jubilee Year 2000, at the Mass for the canonization of St. Faustina Kowalska, Pope John Paul II proclaimed to the world that from now on throughout the Church this Sunday will be called Divine Mercy Sunday. Pope John Paul had actively promoted the message of St. Faustina. In his 1980 encyclical on God s mercy, Rich in Mercy, he developed a scriptural and doctrinal basis for our faith in the mercy of God. By linking the revealed truth about God s mercy to one of the most solemn Sundays after Easter itself, he illumined the fact that the liturgy already proclaimed the divine mercy. The truth has been embedded for two millennia in the worship of the Church. Once again we see an illustration of the ancient saying, The law of faith is the law of prayer. On the Second Sunday of Easter, the responsorial psalm and Gospel for Cycles A, B and C center on the theme of mercy. In Psalm 118 we sing three times, His mercy endures forever. The Gospel, from John 20:19-31, begins with the risen Christ appearing to the apostles on Easter night. Jesus calms his disciples by saying and giving them Peace. He shows them the scars of his Passion, his wounded hands and side. His glorified body retains the evidence of his saving work through his suffering, death and resurrection. Then he breathes on them and explains what the divine breathing means with the words, Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. He gives the apostles the power of God s mercy for the sinner, the gift of forgiving sins from God s treasury of mercy. The other texts speak of healing and give the assurance there is nothing to fear. From Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday to the Eighth Day of Easter, the divine love song of mercy is chanted amid abundant alleluias. For centuries in liturgy the Church has proclaimed the mercy of God through the Word of God and the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ. The tables of Word and Sacrament are heaped with the promises of Divine Mercy and its grand effect in the lives of millions. The liturgy is the storehouse of the wisdom of God and a treasure chest for all the worshipers.

5 THE IMPORTANCE OF PARISH REGISTRATION Whether your Parish is Holy Name or another, it is important to be registered in your Parish. Please register at your local parish if you have recently moved, or even if you have been attending Mass there for years. There's usually information in a parish Sunday bulletin about new registrations. When in doubt, call the Parish office. In most cases, all you need to do is fill out a simple form. By registering in a parish, you are declaring your desire to be part of a Catholic faith community. Your registration affects a parish in many ways. Census numbers may determine how many priests are assigned to a parish, what benefits and obligations the community has to the archdiocese/diocese, and how many Masses and programs are planned and scheduled. Reasons to Register: 1. Registration enables the parish pastor and staff to get to know you better, and helps them be able to communicate with you by sending you mailings. Once you are registered, please notify the parish office of any changes in address or phone number. 2. You may also receive a packet of envelopes to use for your regular contributions. This is important if you want to receive a yearend statement from the parish for income tax purposes. If you do not wish to receive weekly contribution envelopes, this is not a reason not be registered. Just let the secretary know, and envelopes will not be ordered. 3. Registered members can expect pastoral care from their parish, including baptisms, marriages, sacraments, anointing of the sick, and funerals. You must be registered in a parish to receive a Catholic wedding. What is expected of parish members: Here are the minimum requirements that are expected of parish members (Catholics): 1. Participate at Mass on Sundays, and also on the holy days of obligation. 2. Go to Confession at least once a year, 3. Receive Communion at least once a year during the Easter season. 4. Join in fast and abstinence during Lent 5. Provide for the support of the Church through monetary gifts and/or active service. Cf. "Precepts of the Church," Catechism of the Catholic Church # What About Children who are 18 Years of Age or Older? Children are considered members with their parents until they turn 18 years old. Once they are 18, it is their own responsibility to attend church and to register as a member independent of their parents. At least one person in the family has to be Catholic (generally one of the parents) for a family to be parish members.
