3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Not too long ago the priests in the Archdiocese of San Francisco had a 4-day Priests Convocation, for our priestly solidarity and spirituality as we look into the future of our Archdiocese. Part of the group discussion was the clustering and merging of parishes as is happening now with some parishes in the Archdiocese. Aside from the decline of parishioners and financial stability as the reasons for combining parishes into one, the lack of priests plays a substantial role in this consideration. A lot of our priests are retiring in few years time with no one to replace them. This year we only had the ordination of two priests, Fr. Michael Liliedahl (St Cecilia) and Fr. Alvin Yu (St. Matthew) and next year, we won t have any ordinations at all. Last week was Vocation Awareness week and we prayed and will continue to pray that young people in today s society will hear and respond to God s call. Please do your part to encourage them to consider the priesthood and religious life. Our archdiocese is now relying on immigrant priests like we 3 priests at Holy Name. I guess, for me, this is payback time. Before, the American priests would go to the Philippines or to the other parts of the world as missionaries. Now it s our turn to pay back the favor. The Archdiocese should be grateful and proud to have produced an immigrant bishop in the person of Bishop Wang who is living with us. We at Holy Name are also grateful to Fr. Simon Jin who came to us 3 years ago and is now our parochial vicar and the Director of our Chinese Ministry. Our Chinese Ministry at Holy Name is moving by leaps and bounds with his leadership, together with Nelson Lao as coordinator. Not too long ago, Cardinal Zen, Bishop Emeritus of Hong Kong, visited and gave a talk to our Chinese Ministry. Two weeks ago, Bishop Joseph Ha Chi-sing, the Auxiliary bishop of Hong Kong also gave a talk to our Chinese Ministry and had dinner with us at our parish rectory. Several of our Chinese brothers and sisters came to our New Parishioners Dinner and many of them have turned in their Stewardship Commitment Cards. Peter & John in a Chinese restaurant- PETER: "Are there any Jews in China?" JOHN: "I don't know. Why don't we ask the waiter?" John asked him: "Are there any Chinese Jews?" WAITER: "No Chinese Jews, Sir." JOHN: "Are you sure? I can t believe there are no Chinese Jews." The waiter replied exasperated. WAITER: "We have Orange Jews, Prune Jews, Tomato Jews and Grape Jews, but no Chinese Jews." Combining two cultures into one is always possible, like Irish American, or French American. The Filipino and American combination we call Fil-Am. The Filipino and Chinese are called Fil-Chi (Filtsay) or Tsinoy Chinese-Pinoy (a colloquial word for Filipinos). The Chinese Americans are popularly called ABC - American Born Chinese. We also have the FBI - Full Bloodied Irish, the CIA Cambodians in America and the MAFIA -Malaysian Foreigners in America. But what if two parishes or churches are combined into one? If Holy Name was merged with St. Anne s, we could call it Hol-Anne or better yet Holland! If we merged Holy Name and St. Cecilia, it could be Hol- Cel or easier to say and easy to remember by just calling it Wholesale! Wherever life takes us, let us not forget our union with God. We are always one in Christ. We want to thank the Holy Name Ladies Aid Society for donating $200 to buy things for the packages, Julie Quock for the food items and parishioners who provided some small toiletries. Advent 2017 Giving Trees The weekend before Thanksgiving, November 18-19, will mark the beginning of Holy Name of Jesus Parish s annual Giving Tress Project. Ornaments with wish gifts will be hanging on trees. We ask parishioners who are willing to donate to sign up after each Mass that weekend. Our Ladies Aid members will be responsible for the sign-ups. This is to help in following up with the donors who picked up an ornament to make sure all ornaments taken are accounted for. Thank you for your cooperation. Reflection: Healing, nurturing, reconciling. These words capture the heart and actions of Jesus Christ as he encountered the many people in his ministry. Jesus mercy, compassion, understanding, and actions are the models through which each Christian responds to a suffering person. 4 ST. PATRICK S SEMINARY COLLECTION Today s Second Collection is for St. Patrick s Seminary. For more than a century, St. Patrick s Seminary and University in Menlo Park has been dedicated to the ministry of priestly formation, preparing seminarians for ordination and supporting the continued growth of priests already ordained. Well prepared priests are needed more than ever at this time. To sustain their vitally important work, they rely on the generosity of our benefactors and of the parishioners whom our seminarians will one day serve as priests. It is still undetermined how many people perished in these fires. Thousands of homes and businesses within the diocese were destroyed. Many people no longer have jobs and nowhere to live. Schools were also destroyed including a major part of Cardinal Newman High School. The Archdiocese will also substantially supplement the money collected from the parishes. 5 THIRTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME November 12, 2017 One Sunday a pastor told the congregation that the church needed some extra money and asked the people to prayerfully consider giving a little extra in the offering plate. He said that whoever gave the most would be able to pick out three hymns. After the offering plates were passed, the pastor glanced down and noticed that someone had placed a $1000 check on the plate. He was so excited that he immediately shared his joy with his congregation and said he'd like to personally thank the person who placed the money in the plate. A very quiet, elderly, saintly spinster at the back shyly raised her hand. The pastor asked her to come to the front. Slowly she made her way to altar. He told her how wonderful it was that she gave so much and, in thanksgiving, asked her to pick out three hymns. Her eyes brightened as she looked over the congregation, pointed to the three most handsome men in the congregation and said, "OK Father, I'll take him, him, and him." Now that's a modern take on a wise virgin! In one sense the parable of the wise and foolish virgins could be considered the first known oil crisis in the east. It is, however, about planning for the future and pacing oneself to see that one has a future to enjoy. I n Christian theology this is called "discernment." St Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, wrote a lot about discernment and one of his teachings is that the Holy Spirit allows us to prepare for our future without living it. Think for a moment of the times when we are going to have a difficult interview or a conversation we would rather not have. We play out in our mind how the interaction will run. It rarely happens how we imagine and we find that our anxiety and fear has often been misplaced. What is curious is that on the next occasion we go through this same process of trying to live the future all over again. Tragically, some people are so anxious about their future that they try and control it and everyone associated with it. It's always a disaster. St Ignatius was suspicious of this process. Ignatius seems to have understood today's Gospel very well. The early church thought Jesus would return quickly. There was a crisis of faith when he didn't. Some Christians lived as though this imminent return was a fact. We are still waiting. Matthew tells us then, that the Christian life is about wisdom, right judgment and reading the signs of the times. St Ignatius tells us the best way to prepare for the future is to let go of the unhealed past, as best as we can, and live in the here and now. The Holy Spirit helps us see what needs to be done today and what preparation is necessary for tomorrow. This is such simple and sound advice and yet many of us don't heed it. For some of us it takes nothing to feel the hurt and pain of our past or to be consumed by the future. Alcoholics Anonymous sums it up neatly when it tells us to take life "one day at a time" which is another way of saying what Matthew's community came to see, "keep awake because you know not the time or place." The candidate will be briefed on the responsibilities of a sacristan. After a screening with our Pastoral Vicar, Fr. Simon Jin, the candidate who wishes to serve in this ministry will be referred to the Pastor, Rev. Fr.
