3 FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora A young man at a New Year s party turns to his friend and asks for a cigarette. 'I thought you made a New Year s resolution to quit smoking,' his friend says. 'I'm in the process of quitting,' the man says. 'Right now, I am in the middle of phase one.' 'What's phase one?' 'I've quit buying.' Although no can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending. Carl Bard This is what I wish for everybody this year 2014: January of Prosperity February of Love March of Faith April of Trust May of Hope June of Harmony July of Peace August of Calmness September of Good fortune October of Devotion and Commitment November of Thanksgiving December of Gladness and Graciousness This weekend we officially close the Christmas season with the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord. As we leave one chapter and start another, all I have is gratefulness in my heart. I cannot thank you enough for all the support you have given to us and to our church. Your presence at every Mass is already a gesture of your support. Thank you for practicing the spirit of giving during Christmas and may that same spirit that you carry throughout the year. Last weekend was our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. It was a lovely evening as we recognized and acknowledged the volunteers of our parish. There were over a hundred volunteers present, and we can always count on you. As we face the year ahead of us, let us take courage and be consoled by God s promise: For I know the plans I have for you; plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). Let us also be assured of His power over anything or anyone: Be still and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10). HOLY NAME LADIES AID SOCIETY Next weekend, members of the Holy Name Ladies Aid Society will be collecting for the needy in the Parish. Boxes will be by the exits. Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: In celebrating this annual cycle of Christ's mysteries, holy Church honors with special love the Blessed Mary, Mother of God, who is joined by an inseparable bond to the saving work of her Son. In her the Church holds up and admires the most excellent fruit of the redemption, and joyfully contemplates, as in a faultless image, that which she herself desires and hopes wholly to be. The Church has also included in the annual cycle days devoted to the memory of the martyrs and the other saints. Raised up to perfection by the manifold grace of God, and already in possession of eternal salvation, they sing God's perfect praise in heaven and offer prayers for us. By celebrating the passage of these saints from earth to heaven the Church proclaims the paschal mystery achieved in the saints who have suffered and been glorified with Christ; she proposes them to the faithful as examples drawing all to the Father through Christ, and through their merits she pleads for God's favors. Editor s Note: Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy) has as its central aim a focus on greater participation of the laity in the liturgy. We are now reviewing the constitution s fifth chapter, The Liturgical Year. Remaining chapters in Sacrosanctum Concilium will look at "Sacred Music" and "Sacred Art." Mark your calendar! MOVIE NIGHT Thursday, January 23, PM in the Flanagan Center HOLY NAME TREE OF LIFE The Holy Name Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves is located at the back of the Church. Donors can have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. We suggest setting a MAXIMUM number of characters per leaf to 5 lines, 25 characters per line including spaces. 4 What is Lectio Divina? Lectio Divina is Latin for "divine reading," "spiritual reading," or "holy reading" and represents a method of prayer and scriptural reading intended to promote communion with God and provide special spiritual insights. As we start New Year 2014, let us nourish our spiritual life as we continue our faith-journey. Holy Name of Jesus Parish offers a four-session Workshop on Lectio Divina. To give opportunities to all who are interested but whose schedule does not allow, we are giving the sessions on weeknights and weekdays. You may choose whichever time fits your schedule. How do you experience a spiritual being? Members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul invite you to share in their ministry of experiencing God in the poor. Holy Scripture tells us: The Word became flesh and lived among us, and we saw His glory, the glory that is His as the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14) We see Christ in the poor and when we see Christ we experience God. Look for our Invitation to Serve in future bulletins. The Charitable IRA Rollover is extended for 2013! The Charitable IRA Rollover (CIR) is extended for The CIR extension enables a taxpayer to make a gift to the parish before February 1, 2014, and have the contribution treated as a 2013 qualified charitable distribution for income tax purposes. The American Taxpayer Relief Act allows you to make a tax -free gift to the parish directly from your individual Retirement Account (IRA). This means that you can give directly from your IRA to the parish without first having to recognize the distribution as income on your tax return. To be eligible for this favorable tax treatment, gifts are limited annually to $100,000, you must be at least age 70 1/2 when the gift is made and contributions must be paid directly from the IRA. Charitable gifts made from an IRA count toward your IRA minimum required distribution. Please consult your tax advisor for advise about your specific situation. For more information, contact the development office (development@sfarchdiocese.org) or (415) The Baptism of the Lord Matthew 3: The Baptism of the Lord John the Baptist put his right hand on the back of Jesus neck and gripped Jesus arm with his other hand. Just lean back with me. I will guide you, John said as he eased Jesus backwards into the waist-deep water. Jesus gasped as the cold water claimed him, flooding the warmth of his back and gushing up around his shoulders. As his head went underwater, Jesus held his breath and scrunched his eyes tightly shut. He could feel the current flowing past him. Floating just below the surface in the watery silence, Jesus felt peace come over him. John held Jesus firmly, pushing him down into the Jordan. Through the rippling water, Jesus face was framed with the dark crown of his swirling hair. John saw Jesus tranquil expression, like that of a sleeping child. He wasn t struggling for air like most of the people John baptized. The words of Isaiah and Ezekiel flowed into Jesus mind; words about God s spirit being poured out like water, cleansing and empowering. John the Baptist was preaching that the baptism and repentance required of non-jews now was necessary for everyone, even the Jews themselves. And John was truly a prophet. And Jesus had come to fulfill the prophecy. Jesus eyes burst open underwater, startling John. His eyes remained fixed on something in the sky as he stood up in the water. John backed away to behold Jesus, water streaming down his uplifted face. Jesus saw the sky split open and fill with warmth and light. The shimmering light began to take a shape, forming itself into a white blur that suddenly resolved into a beautiful dove. Its wings opened and it began to descend toward Jesus, sending light rays shining down before it. Jesus was overwhelmed with the presence of God filling the dove and overflowing into a Spirit which charged the air with electricity and then the scent of flowers. A great voice spoke words that thundered across the skies and up the mountainsides; and out across the desert waste; and into every part of Jesus mind. They were words seemingly as immense as centuries of time words encompassing all languages, words becoming all the sounds of the universe. All of this distilled itself into a tiny whisper which only Jesus could hear: You are my beloved Son. On you my favor rests. In celebrating the Baptism of Jesus this Sunday, we also celebrate our own baptism our rising up from the water to receive new life. We celebrate that we became Children of God. We celebrate our Confirmation when we received the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the gift of Communion as we share in the banquet of Christ s sacrifice. We celebrate our life, living as Christians so that in our dying we receive Eternal Life.
