3 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM Religious Education classes have already started. If you have not yet registered your child, please talk to Sr. Stella or one of the catechists and register as soon as possible. Classes are held on Saturdays from 10 AM to 12 Noon. Registration fee is $50 for the first child and $25 for siblings. Fee for First Reconciliation/First Eucharist and Confirmation Students is $75/student. If you have not yet enrolled your child/children, please do so as soon as possible there s still time to catch up. Registration forms are available at the back of the Church. During the week, you may drop by the Pastoral Center office ( th Ave.) from 9 AM-3 PM or call Sr. Stella (415) R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) The R.C.I.A. classes, conducted through the scripture and the catechism of the Catholic church, has started but you can still sign up. Classes will run through Pentecost Sunday. Do not be afraid to participate and become enthusiastic in your faith. Faith is one of our greatest gifts that we have received from God. Let us pray and open our hearts to Him, who is inviting you to know him better and to learn to appreciate his love. For more information, please contact Terry Flaherty at (650) MINISTRY FAIR On October 16 our Parish will sponsor a Ministry Fair after all Masses. The ministry fair will help us understand more about stewardship, and the needs and opportunities of getting more involved in the different ministries so that each ministry can have enough people taking responsibility and sharing the burden. We are one Parish working for the kingdom of God, let us not allow our gifts to go to waste. Let us remember Gifts are given to share. Gifts are for the good of the Community. Let us, therefore come forward with our gifts and talents, and get involved; God is calling you. On the 16 th let us visit the ministry fair. Holy Name Of Jesus October Rosary for Peace Come and join together to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary through the prayer of the Rosary. - Saturday 4:30 PM in church just before the Mass - Sunday 8:15 AM in church after 7:30 Mass - Sunday 9:00 AM in church just before the 9:30 Mass - Sunday 11:00 AM in church just before the 11:30 Mass We will come together through the five Sundays of the month of October. HOLY NAME YOUTH GROUP The Youth Group meets every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month after the 11:30 AM Mass. Calling all the youth! Do you ever get the feeling that going to Mass becomes somewhat routine and you're looking to relate the gospel to your daily lives? Wondering if there might be something productive and fun to do on a Sunday afternoon? Or perhaps you're looking to meet new friends from church? We can do this all at the Holy Name Youth Group gathering. We meet every 2nd and 4th Sunday after the AM Mass. Each of the meetings will be focused on one or two familiar topics geared towards Catholic character development. We will learn through sharing, games and other fun activities. Our goal is to build a strong community of youth who not only understands but also applies catholic moral integrity and values in their daily lives. Again the meeting is: Every 2nd and 4th Sunday after AM Mass. Snacks will be provided. This youth group shall include but is not limited to teens from ages 13 to 18 years old. Arnold Zamora We welcomed the Class of 1961 last Saturday for their 50 th Anniversary Re union. Sixty members of the class attend ed the event in the Flanagan Center, along with their spouses. They enjoyed a tour of the school, the music and pictures of their past; and ended the evening at the Irish Cultural Center, followed by breakfast at Harding Park the next morning. We have received the Facility Assessment Report from the Archdiocese for their inspection on July We have many areas to address, due to the age of our facilities and equipment. Here are the highlights: Executive summary After a full inspection of the Parish facilities, it was observed that because of the continuing maintenance agreements carried for the building systems and the diligence of the Parish staff, the Parish facilities, overall, are in good shape. There are, however, a few larger items that should be noted, monitored, attended to in the next five (5) years to continue the longevity of the Parish facilities. This list of items can be used as an agenda to begin a discussion between Property Management Advisors, Inc. the Real Property Support Group of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the Parish to review in detail and to strategize the Parish s future capital improvement plan. Examples of Items HVAC (Church) - The boiler in the Church was observed to be of an older vintage. Plan to replace the boiler in the long term. ($35,000) Exterior Paint (Rectory) - The paint finish of the exterior of the Rectory was observed in fair condition. Plan to repaint the building in the mid-term. ($27,000) HVAC (Convent) - The radiant heating system observed in the Convent should be inspected for leaks and corrosion. Fire Escape (Convent) - The fire escape was observed to be unsound. Retain an engineer to review the structure. (Engineer $2,000, Fire Escape $45,000) Exterior Paint (School) - The paint finish of the exterior of the School was observed in fair condition. Plan to repaint the structure in the long term. ($55,000) As you can see, we have more costly projects in our future. We are thankful for your continued support, especially to those who remember Holy Name in their estates, those who have participated in the Tree of Life, and those who designate Holy Name for donations for their deceased family members. Money isn't everything, but there have been times when my bank said it would not accept anything else.

5 Blessing of Animals by Kevin E. Mackin, O.F.M. As autumn arrives, people in various places may notice something odd. A procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, is led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Pets. This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi s love for all creatures. Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, loved the larks flying about his hilltop town. He and his early brothers, staying in a small hovel, allowed themselves to be displaced by a donkey. Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God s living things. All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures. And there was testimony in the cause for St. Clare of Assisi s canonization that referred to her little cat! That there are today over 62 million cats in the U.S. attests to the continuing affection we have for our furry, feathered or finned friends. We've even had a cat called Socks in the White House. Other popular presidential pets range from Abraham Lincoln s Fido to Lyndon Johnson s beagles, named Him and Her. For single householders, a pet can be a true companion. Many people arrive home from work to find a furry friend overjoyed at their return. Many a senior has a lap filled with a purring fellow creature. The bond between person and pet is like no other relationship, because the communication between fellow creatures is at its most basic. Eye-to-eye, a man and his dog, or a woman and her cat, are two creatures of love. No wonder people enjoy the opportunity to take their animal companions to church for a special blessing. Church is the place where the bond of creation is celebrated. At Franciscan churches, a friar with brown robe and white cord often welcomes each animal with a special prayer. The Blessing of Pets usually goes like this: Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen. As the prayer is offered, the pet is gently sprinkled with holy water. Believe it or not, most pets receive this sacramental spritz with dignity, though I must admit I have seen some cats flatten their ears a bit as the drops of water lightly pelt them. But the owner is happy, and who knows what spiritual benefits may result? Usually the Blessing of Pets is held outdoors. But I remember it rained one year, and all were invited inside St. Stephen s Church in Manhattan. It was quite a sight to see pairs of creatures one human, one animal sitting in the pews. The pastor joined right in with his beagle. Noah s Ark was never like this! Some people criticize the amount and cost of care given to pets. People are more important, they say. Care for poor people instead of poodles. And certainly our needy fellow humans should not be neglected. However, I believe every creature is important. The love we give to a pet, and receive from a pet, can draw us more deeply into the larger circle of life, into the wonder of our common relationship to our Creator. Kevin E.
