4 FA Z t o r s N o t e s By Fr. Arnold Zamora Happy St. Patrick s Day, again! March 17th is the actual day for St. Patrick s Day. This year, March 17th falls on a Sunday and the Sun day Liturgy always takes precedence over the memorial of a saint and that is why we don t celebrate St. Patrick s Day this Sunday. However, since St. Patrick is the co-patron of our Archdiocese of San Francisco, we celebrate his memorial the next day, Monday, March 18th. In the middle of our Lenten journey, St. Patrick comes to us inviting us to acknowledge the presence of Christ in us. The "Lorica," or "Breastplate," of St. Patrick has been called "part prayer, part anthem, and part incantation." It includes these timeless words: Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me, Christ in the eye that sees me, Christ in the ear that hears me St. Patrick announces to us the joy of Easter. A lovely legend is how Patrick lit the Easter bonfire: He lit a flame in honor of the Resurrection even though it was on a night forbidden to kindle any fire anywhere in Ireland, except for the high king's own royal blaze visible at Tara. The punishment for such an action was death - but when the king's men came to douse the Paschal fire and kill those who had kindled it, the flames would not go out. Lent is not only about abstaining from something but also about doing something, like supporting our Altar Servers Breakfast Fundraising event this Sunday, or responding to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal. I am so thankful to those who have already turned in their pledges and contributions. I am happy to let you know that we have met a little over 50% of our goal. Your response has been so encouraging. The little church suddenly stopped buying from its regular office supply dealer. So the dealer phoned the pastor to ask why. I ll tell you why, shouted the pastor indignantly. Our church ordered some pencils from you to be used in the pews for visitors to register. Well, interrupted the dealer, didn t you receive them yet? Oh, we received them all right, replied the pastor. You sent us little pencils each stamped with the words: Play Golf Next Sunday. Well, I hope that the little cute pens in the pew will remind you of the Archbishop s Annual Appeal and more so to think about our church and attend Mass every Sunday because of those little pens each stamped with the words in bold letters: Holy Name. For He sent His Son, the eternal Word, who enlightens all men, so that He might dwell among men and tell them of the innermost being of God (see John 1:1-18). Jesus Christ, therefore, the Word made flesh, was sent as "a man to men." He "speaks the words of God" (John 3;34), and completes the work of salvaon which His Father gave Him to do (see John 5:36; John 17:4). To see Jesus is to see His Father (John 14:9). For this reason Jesus perfected revela on by fulfilling it through his whole work of making Himself present and manifes ng Himself: through His words and deeds, His signs and wonders, but especially through His death and glorious resurrec on from the dead and final sending of the Spirit of truth. Moreover He confirmed with divine tes mony what revela on proclaimed, that God is with us to free us from the darkness of sin and death, and to raise us up to life eternal. Editor s Note: If recent papal conclave history is any guide, by the me you are reading this, our Church, via its cardinals and with guidance from the Holy Spirit, will have already revealed the 265th successor to St. Peter. My specula on is informed by a recent blog pos ng wri en by Jimmy Akin that can be read on the Na onal Catholic Register website. Jimmy is a well-known U.S.-based Catholic author/ apologist whose work is frequently featured in books, newspaper and magazine ar cles, blog pos ngs, and on the radio (o en he is heard locally on 1260 AM s Catholic Answers broadcasts). His research notes that since 1846, all papal conclaves have taken place with 2-5 days. Anything can happen, of course, but since today, as I write these words, is the Monday before the papal conclave begins on Tuesday, I m op misc that by this Sunday, we will have much to celebrate!

Many parents and friends were entertained on Sunday, March 10 with our Drama Club s interpretation of the musical, Annie, Jr. Students practiced their speaking and singing parts for weeks beforehand, parents stepped up to have practices in their homes, help out with the costumes, prepare the music that accompanied the students singing, bring food provided for the audience during the intermission and after the musical, and set up and then take down the chairs in the gym.
