3 ACE COLLECTION Today s Second Collection is the ACE COLLECTION for the benefit of our Parish School. Your generosity is always appreciated by our school children. NEXT SUNDAY S (Dec 8 &9) SECOND COLLECTION IS THE RETIREMENT FUND FOR THE RELIGIOUS Why do Catholic women and men religious face a financial crisis as they age? Traditionally, religious worked for modest stipends that did not include retirement benefits. These stipends were invested in ministry and in education for members who were engaged in ministry. At the same time, members of religious communities often received pro bono services from generous Catholic health-care professionals and institutions. Today, a dramatically altered health-care environment and escalating costs have had a serious impact on religious institutes' capacity to provide the care that elder members need. Currently, earnings from the ministries of younger religious cover a significant portion of elder-care expenses. However, the number of younger religious able to serve in compensated ministry is rapidly diminishing. In fact, by 2019, it is projected that religious past age 70 will outnumber those under age 70 by nearly four to one. Doesn't the Catholic Church pay the health-care costs of women and men religious? Although most religious who currently serve in church ministries do receive retirement benefits, senior religious often served for small stipends and did not receive retirement benefits. Each religious institute is financially autonomous and responsible for the support of its members through the income of the institute. Income, earnings, and expenses are managed separately from the Catholic Church and its diocesan structures. Why do those in vowed religious life receive smaller Social Security benefits than other U.S. citizens? Until 1972, there was no provision in the law permitting religious to participate in the Social Security system. The FICA (Social Security) payments that religious institutes began to submit in the early 1970s were based on their low cost-of-living allowances compatible with a vow of poverty. How do I know that my donations actually assist elderly religious? (Arch)dioceses submit donations to the National Religious Retirement Office, an organization that applies approximately 93 cents of every dollar donated to financial distributions that assist with the costs of elder care at religious institutes. Roughly seven percent of donations are used for administration, education, and the national annual appeal. Your generous donation to the Retirement Fund for the Religious is very much appreciated. 4 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Welcome to the New Year of the Church on this First Sunday of Advent! I say, Happy New Year to all of you! Our Church calendar or Liturgical Year starts on the first Sunday of Advent and ends on the Feast of Christ the King. It goes on a three year cycle A, B, and C. We are now in Year C. In Year A, we read primarily from the Gospel of Matthew. In Year B, we hear the gospels from Mark and in Year C we listen to the Gospel of Luke. We listen to the Gospel of John every year, during the seasons of Lent and Easter. Right after Thanksgiving Day, Christmas lights were already flickering in some homes, Christmas songs were playing 24 hrs. on the radio, Christmas items were on display in the stores. Christmas is certainly different from the other holidays. But before I get excited for Christmas, let me first acknowledge and express my gratitude to those who have enhanced our celebration of our liturgy for Thanksgiving Day and Christ the King Feast day. To our Holy Name School Second graders who acted as pilgrims passing out thanksgiving cards and who sung beautifully and enthusiastically at the mass. Thanks to Mrs. Sharon Aymard, the second grade teacher, and to Sr. Esther as well. Thanks also to our Third graders who brought offerings at the mass on Christ the King Sunday. Thanks to Mrs. Melissa Eusebio, our Third Grade teacher. Food always unites us and thanks to the Fil-Am Club, we had enough food to share after the 11:30AM mass. Mrs. Naty Martin has kept the tradition of donating a cake for everybody to munch on. To continue with food, our Knights of Holy Name also had their Fellowship Breakfast last Wednesday after the 9:00AM mass. Although their numbers are declining, they continue to serve the church in every way. Those were the light and happy moments in our parish. We also had some dark and sad moments with two funerals for two parishioners, Romeo Palarca and Louis Sacha. Louis wife, Dolores, is one of our Eucharist Ministers, and was a teacher at our school. My heart and my prayers go out to them and their families. There were a lot of tears shed, but we always live in the hope that God will wipe away our tears. Christ comes to give us hope, peace and joy. Back to getting ready for Christmas, I saw this Holiday Office memo: To: All Employees From: Management Subject: Rules for Office Conduct During the Christmas Season The following rules which originate from FROLIC (Federal Revelry Office and Leisure Industry Council) are to be implemented immediately. Continued on column on right... WHAT S YOUR CATHOLIC IQ? A Self Assessment for your fun and Enlightenment By: Joe Paprocki Use this exercise as a fun review. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for justice, we usually want someone to get his or her comeuppance. God s justice is something other than this, of course. God s justice comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind. Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a time when a just one will sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah s time. Israel s kings held the promise of God s fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God s promise could be realized through them. Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke s Gospel echoes that announcement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. And so Advent begins with a promise. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. FAZtor s Notes continued. Company cars are not to be used to go over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house. "Jingle Bells"is not to be played on the push button phones. It runs up the long distance bill. Work assignments are not to be filed under "Bah Humbug." Running aluminum foil through the shredder to make tinsel is not allowed. Eggnog is not to be dispensed from the vending machines. All fruitcake must be eaten before July 1. P.S. Have an enjoyable Christmas season.

5 HOLY NAME SCHOOL Dear Holy Name Families, Thank you to all the families who helped in any way to make our traditional Thanksgiving luncheon a huge success. Students, parents, teachers and staff members were able to choose from a variety of different foods and enjoy each other s company. It certainly was a good beginning to the holiday season. God bless you as we enter into the Advent Season this Sunday, December 2. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos OPEN SCHOOL KINDERGARTEN TOUR There will be another Open School for kindergarten on Wednesday, December 5, at 9:00. Please tell your friends, co-workers, and family about this event. Interested families will meet Mrs. Cosmos, the school Principal, tour the school and listen to Miss Dodds, as she shares the activities of the kindergarten routine. HOLY NAME SEASON OF GIVING Holy Name School has a long tradition of community service. There are people who need assistance. Please see the many ways in which you can participate and talk with your children about how we can make sacrifices and give a little back to others during the Advent Season. CHRIST CHILD LAYETTE DRIVE We welcome donations of new, newborn size clothing. All of the items will benefit needy mothers and their newborns all year long. Come and see the crèche set up on the main floor of school. CLOTHING DRIVE We are again collecting clothing for our annual clothing drive. Any usable clothing is appreciated. This collection will begin on Monday, December 3, and end on Friday, December 14. FOOD BANK Please support Holy Name Preschool in their food drive for the SF and Marin Food Banks. Please drop off your canned goods, cereal and granola bars into the food barrel outside the school office. Your food donations ensure that no one in our community goes without a meal this holiday season and beyond. The preschool thanks you for your support. THE THREE COMINGS OF ADVENT There are three distinct comings of the Lord of which I know: His coming to humankind, His coming into humankind, and His coming against humankind. St. Bernard: Third Sermon for Advent BOOK SIGNING EVENT You are cordially invited to A Book Reading/Signing event for Robert Diemer and his first novel, The Widow s Son, on Thursday, December 13. Robert (Bob) Diemer is a Holy Name parishioner and parent (Jean-Pierre 3 rd Grade). Light refreshments will be served from 7:00 to 8:00 pm in Flanagan Center. A reading and book signing will follow. For a lawyer practicing in paradise, Drake Burnham has a betel nut basket packed with problems. Against his better judgment, Burnham agrees to defend a nightmare client, Jangle Elwell, before Super Max Coleman, a hanging judge who has it in for both attorney and client. Jangle soon turns the Frost & Burnham law office inside out, courting Drake's secretary, punching out the office investigator, and making any defense to the charge of bank robbery all but impossible. But Burnham's initial troubles pale when Jangle is murdered. 15% of net sales (from this event) will be donated to Holy Name. If interested in attending. Please RSVP to siovonne@gmail.com or call Answers to WHAT S YOUR CATHOLIC IQ on page 4: 1. B. Scapulars worn by the laity are a miniature imitation of the garment worn by monastic religious orders. 2. C.
