3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora People don t want to hear the word fat much more, or to be called as such. But I heard a lot of that word last week, in a good way though. They greeted me Gung hei FAT choi on Chinese New Year. Then the next day, just before Ash Wednesday, people also greeted me with Happy FAT Tuesday or Mardi Gras. And after all the food and celebration came Ash Wednesday, when they turned to me and greeted me: Happy Birthday, FATher Arnold! It was my birthday when the season of Lent started this year. It was a good day to reflect that my life and yours too, are but lent from God. Our life belongs to Him. He owns us. He made us, we belong to Him. Lent comes from the German word meaning spring. We observe 40 days of preparation for a renewal in spring. The number forty has much significance on Jesus 40 days in the wilderness before undertaking his public ministry and his 40 hours in the tomb before his resurrection. On this First Sunday of Lent, we will greet each other with a different but lovely Lenten greeting too. It s Happy VaLENTines Day! What a good way to start our Lenten journey as we reflect on the love God has given us and the love we have to give to Jesus. It s Heart s Day. As part of our Lenten preparation let us look what s in our hearts. Is our heart full of H.E.A.R.T.? These are the sins of the heart: H-Hatred, E-Envy, A=Anger, R=Resentment, T=Timidity (or the lack of courage to correct a mistake). It s time to take away the H.E.A.R.T. in our hearts. Roger, who was 19 years old, was buying an expensive bracelet, to surprise his girlfriend on Valentine's Day, at a very smart jeweler's shop in Hatton Garden, London. The jeweler inquired, 'Would you like your girlfriend's name engraved on it?' Roger thought for a moment, grinned, then answered, No, instead engrave To my one and only love. The jeweler smiled and said, 'Yes, sir; how very romantic of you.' Roger retorted with a glint in his eye, 'Not exactly romantic, but very practical. This way, if we break up, I can use it again. May we celebrate this day with the ones we love and the ones we should love or better yet, with the ones in need of our love. May we journey this season of Lent with the One who loves us and the One to whom we give our One and Best Love. Let s have plenty of Love this season! PARISH MISSION LENTEN REGULATIONS: As in the past, the following regulations are in place for Abstaining and Fasting during Lent: ABSTINENCE: Everyone fourteen years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on ASH Wednesday, the FRIDAYS of Lent and GOOD FRIDAY FAST: Everyone eighteen years of age and older but under the age of sixty is also bound to fast on ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRI- DAY. On these two days, the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute a full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast and abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not likely excuse themselves from this obligation.

We hope you all had a wonderful celebration and enjoyed the long weekend. Thank you to all of the parents who helped with the many celebrations today- our students are so appreciative of your labors of love! Fourth graders returned safely from Gold Camp last Friday, and what a wonderful experience it was. Thank you to all of the parent chaperones- it truly would not have been possible without you. 5 Preschool-The Red Fish students learned about the letter of week "J" and about Lunar New Year. They worked collaboratively on a dragon's head and paraded around the classroom today! The Blue Fish students made Chinese drums and lion heads for the arrival of Chinese New Year. The BF students also learned a great deal about Rihya and her family during her share-shelf week. The BF students learned that Disneyland was Rihya and her family's favorite family destination and were able to decorate their own Mickey Mouse rice krispie treat made by Rihya's family. Kindergarten- Kindergarteners had a very busy and fun week as they celebrated two special days last Tuesday- Groundhog Day and the 100th Day of School. In the language arts' station, students wrote about someone they loved and how they show their love. They worked with the letter h. 1st Grade- Last week in first grade the students were able to attend an assembly about recycling and composting. The presentation was very informative. First grade read stories and made special hats for Groundhog Day. The students came to school as 100th Day super heroes! Each child created their own cape decorated with 100 items of their choice. During our 100th day of school the students made Fruit Loop necklaces counting out 10 fruit Loops at a time. The children enjoyed writing stories about when they turn 100 years old! They also enjoyed making a 100th day books about their likes and dislikes! The students finished off their week by making terrariums in science class. They are very excited to observe any changes that may occur. 2nd Grade- Last week the second graders worked on the oi, oy sound in phonics and spelling. For Reading, the children read a story about a girl who learned that she was equally important in the family as her baby brother. In Math, the students worked with three digit addition problems regrouping the ones and the tens. In Science, the second graders began working on twirlers to help them answer the focus question: What causes twirlers to rotate? The children read about scientists and inventors in their Social Studies books. The second graders finished chapter 8, We Say We Are Sorry, in their Religion textbooks. 3rd Grade- For math, the students continued with the multiples and divisors of 11 and 12. Third graders learned that they use smaller known facts in order to solve the larger numbered equations. For reading, students recognized the relationship between an effect and a cause by looking for clue words such as so and because. Students will relate the subject of cause and effect with inferences in the future. For grammar, third grade worked on adverbs and how it described the verb in a sentence. The students learned that adverbs usually ended with -ly, but it also explained the how, when, and where of a verb. In social studies, students concentrated on how early Native Americans used natural resources for their food, clothing, and shelter. Students also learned what a cut-away diagram is and understood how it can help them see both the inside and the outside of objects at the same time. 4th Grade- The 4th graders were on an overnight field trip to Gold Country where they learned all about what life was like for people during the Gold Rush. Students went on several hikes, learned how the Miwok Native Americans lived off of the land, sang songs by a campfire, and panned for real gold! They also got to explore the Gold Rush downtown area, tasted ice-cold sarsparilla, and learned about the people and their ancestors that first lived in Gold Country. To cap things off, fourth graders went to the Moaning Caverns and walked down a 463 foot spiral staircase and saw amazing rock formations with unique shapes due to the lack of light for hundreds and thousands of HOLY NAME SCHOOL years. Gold Camp was a wonderful experience! 5th Grade- In reading, the students read "The Marble Champ" by Gary Soto. Student story reviews were all thumbs up. Students also studied the plot of "The Marble Champ" and will complete a project this week based on the conflict, rising action, climax and outcome. In math, students continued their study of the multiplication of decimals in expanded form, modeling, and detecting patterns in the multiplication of decimals. Finally, students participated in the Food to Flowers! Lunchroom Composting Program presented by the San Francisco Department of the Environment. 6th Grade- In English, students began writing their research papers, focusing on outlining their ideas, writing introductions with hooks and thesis statements, and including citations. In literature the students read "Cricket in the Street" about a sad argument between 3 friends and the power of forgiveness. Students worked on understanding the dialect of "Trinidanian English", and how it compared to our standard English language. In math, students began a new chapter on ratios and rates. They also learned to make equivalent ratios. In Science students studied Era and Periods in the Geologic time scale and the range of fossil evidence over the past 3.5 billion years. In religion, students used the Holy Scripture to study the transition of Israel from a collection of tribal settlements to a true kingdom. In history, 6th graders continued to learn about Ancient Egypt by studying the rule of Hatshpetsut, the most powerful and dominant female pharaoh. 7th Grade-In English, students began a unit on verbs. They studied action, being, and helping verbs, including learning a song to help them remember helping verbs. In literature students continued their class book The Greek Gods, reading myths about Apollo and Artemis, and their talented children. In Math, 7th graders are learning about ratios, rates and proportions. Students have learned what a ratio is as well as how to find the unit rate of a ratio. Students also learned how to tell if ratios are equivalent by cross multiplying. In Science students examined plant structures including aspects of seeds and flower structure. 8th Grade-In English, students wrote persuasive speeches which they will be delivering this week. In literature students continued their class novel To Kill A Mockingbird. Students discussed the famous quote about "never really understanding a person until you climb inside their skin" as they studied empathy. Students continue to work on their understanding of Southern life in the 1930's and how it relates to vestiges of the Civil War. In Math, 8th grade students continued their work on linear equations. Students learned about point-slope form and slopeintercept form. In Science, students. A MESSAGE FROM FATHER ARNOLD Welcome to the "Year of the Monkey!' New Year means new life and so is LENT, a new season of the Church, starting also this week on Ash Wednesday. Remember, our life is LENT from God. We may not know what the future holds for us but what matters most is that we know who holds our future in His hands. As we attune ourselves to the spirit of Lent, let us remember that God never made a fish with fins until He made an ocean for it to swim in. God never made a bird until He made an atmosphere for it to fly in. And God never put the longing for immortality in a soul until He made a heaven to satisfy these longings. Have a blessed week! -Fr.
