3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Congratulations to our parishioners Gerry and Sally Cassidy, who are celebrating their 50 th Wedding anniversary this weekend. Gerry and Sally are longtime and very active parishioners and former School parents at Holy Name, whom we can consider as some of the pillars of our church. This wonderful couple have shown us the Stewardship way of life of giving your time, talent and treasure. Gerry acts as the captain of the Ushers, in charge of the church collection, at the 9:30AM mass every Sunday. As a member of the Knights of Holy Name, he offers his time watching our church and making sure it is available for those who want to pray. Sally, on the other hand, has been active for a great many years in supporting our parish St. Patrick s Dinner by selling tickets. They give witness to the recent Encyclical of the Holy Father Pope Francis, Amoris Laetitia - The Joy of Love, about the importance of family and the sacredness of the Sacrament of Marriage. They are an inspiration for all the married couples, to those intending to get married or to any family. This Sunday at St. Mary s Cathedral, Brother Arthur Lee, SJ, is celebrating his 50 th anniversary as a Jesuit. Brother Artie Lee is an outstanding personality and an icon at Saint Ignatius College Preparatory. If you were at S.I. anytime since the mid-1970s, chances are you had your life enriched by Brother Artie Lee, S.J., Fr. Sauer wrote on Brother Lee s biography. Brother Lee goes to our Sunday 7:30AM mass. During my first years at Holy Name Brother Lee invited me to play tennis at SI where he taught me and another priest the proper way to serve the ball and to become a better player. Now at age 90, he still plays tennis and coaches tennis players at SI. He has long since retired, but not from God s work as he continues to go St. Anne s homes to help the residents at mealtime and offer a smile and friendship. Congratulations Brother Lee! You are an inspiration! They call 50 years the Golden Anniversary or Golden Jubilee. Gold is the highest award you can get at the Olympics. You are bringing us gold with your exemplary lives, either as a married couple or a minister of God. Thank you Gerry and Sally and Brother Lee and those who have celebrated their Golden anniversary for a great example of faithfulness and love. Did you hear about the married couple both 70 years old, celebrating their 50 th anniversary? That night, God appeared to them in prayer to congratulate them for their faithfulness and grant them each one wish. The wife wanted to travel around the world. Poof! The wife had tickets in her hand for a world cruise. Next, God asked the husband what he wanted. He said, I wish I had a wife 30 years younger than me. Poof! The husband became 100 years old. ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL APPEAL 2016 Thank you to all who have already sent in their generous donation to the 2016 Archbishop s Annual Appeal. To date, we have completed 43% of our assessed goal. I humbly ask those of you who have yet to participate in the Annual Appeal to do so soon. You may want to consider a donation of $ (or more) which qualifies you for the 1% Club. All 1% Club Donors for the 2016 Annual Appeal will be treated to a catered Thank You Dinner (date to be announced). You may use the brochures available on the pews, or if you prefer to do online donation, please log onto our parish website holynamesf. org and click on the archdiocesan annual appeal link on the home page. CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS COLLECTION Many dioceses right here in the United States do not have enough priests and trained lay ministers to serve their parishes. These dioceses are known as home missions. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal, which will take place this weekend in the second collection, supports these dioceses by funding essential ministries, including seminary education and lay ministry training. Please be generous in this appeal this weekend and share your resources to strengthen the Church at home. Next weekend, April 30/May 1, our Second Collection is the ACE COLLECTION for the benefit of our Parish School. CATHOLIC CHARITIES SUNDAY SECOND COLLECTION On the weekend of May 7 & 8, is Catholic Charities Sunday. This annual second collection asks parishioners to live their faith by generously supporting the good work of Catholic Charities, the social services arm of the Catholic Church in our local area. Your contributions directly support programs and services that provide relief for homeless families, frail seniors, immigrants, the working poor, children and youth, and many of our most vulnerable neighbors who are struggling to meet even their most basic needs. Put your faith into action and change a life for the better today by contributing to Catholic Charities. Together we are Catholic Charities! For more information on the work of Catholic Charities and how you can help strengthen families and reduce poverty locally please contact Jane Ferguson Flout at or MOTHER S DAY CARDS Members of the Holy Name Ladies Aid will be selling Mother s Day Mass Cards on the weekends of April 23/24 and April 30/May 1. As always if you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to reach out. Enjoy the rest of your week! Thanks, Natalie Cirigliano, Principal Classroom Updates Preschool-Thank you to our preschool families for attending our first Family Fun Day last Saturday! Everyone had fun! The Red Fish students were very excited about making shapes and writing letters with shaving cream last week as the letter of the week was "S". They also enjoyed the fruit smoothies they made with bananas, blueberries and strawberries. The RF students ended the week with a trip to the Ortega Playground. The BF students went on a nature walk and brought back insects they had found. They also created many drawings and collages about insects in class. The BF students observed the changes occurring with our caterpillars and learned about their life cycle. Kindergarten- In Language Arts, Kindergarten focused on the letter sound u. The students created a list of words using word families -un, -ug, -uck, -ump. They also read books where they had to solve several riddles using these word families. During the language arts station, students made umbrellas raining -un and -ug words. For Art, students worked with oil pastels and tissue paper in order to create sunflowers. In Math, Kindergarten started a new chapter on position words. They turned and talked with their neighbors using unifix cubes to describe the position of an object using their new vocabulary words. In religion, we read and re-enacted the Bible story "The Good Man From Samaria." We then had a discussion about the times students helped people who were hurt, just like the good man did in the story. 1st Grade The students read a Frog and Toad story called The Garden. After reading the story the students discussed what happened in the beginning, the middle, and the end of the story and their favorite parts of the story. The students worked with words containing the /ar/ sound as in "car" and "jar". They also focused on making new words by adding /ly/ such as, "lovely" and "slowly". In math the students took their chapter 8 test which evaluated the children on their knowledge of telling time to the hour and half hour, as well as comparing length, and measurement.

5 1st Grade continued: The students continue to learn about our country's symbols in social studies as they gathered information about the White House and the American Flag. They were able to take notes and add illustrations in their notebooks. In religion class, the students showed their knowledge of prayer by taking a Unit 3 wrap up assessment. They also have begun a new chapter in which they are beginning to learn about the Holy Spirit. To end the week, the class went on a field trip to the Botanical Gardens in Golden Gate Park. It was a beautiful day! The students were able to see where different kinds of plants live and grow. They also learned how we use plants for food, clothing, furniture and household decorations. Thank you to all the parents who were able to join us on this trip. You are greatly appreciated! They also have begun a new chapter in which they are beginning to learn about the Holy Spirit. You are greatly appreciated! 2nd Grade began Language Arts by writing jellyfish stories. Each child had to describe the facts about the jellyfish in his/her story. In Phonics, the children used the prefixes un, dis, and re adding them to base words. Before reading the informational text about dinosaurs, the children discussed why dinosaurs disappeared from the Earth. From the story Let's Go Dinosaur Tracking, the children learned that several facts can be discovered about dinosaurs from their tracks. In Grammar, the children demonstrated their ability to write contractions. During Math, the children used logical reasoning to solve problems. They also used a centimeter ruler and meter stick to measure objects. In Social Studies, the students reviewed vocabulary for city and state governments and also worked in the Social Studies practice books. In Religion, the Catholic children received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the second time. The second graders were able to experience the confessional. After Reconciliation, Father Arnold invited the second grade class around the altar where he explained the Mass, the items he uses during Mass, and his vestments. The children wrote notes to Father Arnold thanking him for the time he spent with them and for explaining the Mass. 3rd Grade students collected and recorded data in math. Students analyzed graphs that represent data. They learned to make line, plot, and scaled graphs. For reading, they concluded a unit with a week long test. Students studied the use of conjunctions with words and sentences for grammar. In social studies, students enjoyed another wonderful game of Jeopardy where they reviewed California Indians today as well as the government. Also, the students will be doing an intensive presidential biography research project with partners over the next month which they are excited about. For religion, students presented grouped oral reports on saints which included Edmund Rice, Dominic Savio, Dorothy Day, Iwene Tansi, Scholastica and Benedict, and the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Students started their unit of water in science with the water cycle. 4th Grade- In math, students learned the relationship between decimals in the tenths and hundredths places and their fraction forms. They have been working really hard to understand how to add and subtract decimals and how to rewrite fractions into decimals and money form. Students got into small groups and did a chain writing exercise where one person writes for a few minutes then passes the story to the next person who continues the story, and so on until the story is finished. HOLY NAME SCHOOL The last person writes a cliffhanger-style ending and each person individually writes their own ending. In history, students learned about The Great Depression and how it affected California by practicing their note taking skills. They use a simple, organized bullet and dash format wherein a bullet denotes titles or headings and a dash represents a short summary of a paragraph. Students write new vocabulary terms in a different colored pencil or pen in order to highlight it in their notes. 5th Grade students began their studies of the human body systems. They studied the connection between the heart and lungs. They learned how to take their pulse and to calculate resting and active pulse rates. In English, students began their final draft of their persuasive letters. They will be reading their letters aloud this week and will attempt to convince their classmates to support their topic. In religion, students completed their chapter test which focused on the importance of Jesus as a healer and the origin of the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Finally, students finished their social studies group gameboards and enjoyed several rounds of American Revolution trivia! 6th Grade- In literature the students began reading their class novel Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry. This Newberry award winning book is about two friends, Annemarie and Ellen, and takes place in Denmark during WWII. The students did pre-reading activities by predicting different elements of the story and learned background information about the Nazi and the Resistance in Denmark. In English, students finished up their poetry books and began a unit on modifiers- adjectives and adverbs. In Science, students have been working on a report on Climate Change. Students have reviewed aspects of ancient climates, evidence for climate change as well as gaining some insights into the United Nations Conference on climate change held in Paris th Grade- In history, students learned about the Olmec Civilization and the many gifts they brought to the world. In Religion the students completed a unit focused around trusting others and God. In Scripture the students broke down the meaning of trust with the story of raising Lazarus. In literature students continued reading their class novel When You Reach Me. Students discussed the difference between "relative" and "absolute" statements, and learned a bit about Einstein's theory of relativity. In English, students finished up their research on their environmental problems, wrote thesis statements, and created outlines to help them in writing their research papers.
