2 St. Francis of Assisi (1226) Founder of the Franciscan and Poor Clares October 4, 2015 St. Francis is one of the most famous Saints of the Church. The son of a wealthy merchant, he spent his early years in extravagance. While Francis was praying in the church of San Damiano, near Assisi, Jesus Christ spoke to him from the crucifix, telling him to repair His house. Believing at first that God wanted him to repair the dilapidated church of San Damiano, Francis embraced a life of poverty and set to work begging alms to purchase building materials. Francis father, humiliated by his son, denounced him. Francis began to preach, and his holiness, simplicity, love of nature and joyful embrace of Lady Poverty attracted many followers. This was the beginning of the Franciscan Order. Francis was never ordained, but he sent his brothers to preach in far-off places. With St. Clare he co-founded the Poor Clares, who follow the Franciscan spirituality. Fervently desiring to convert the Mohammedans, St. Francis went to Egypt and met with the Sultan, but he was apparently unsuccessful. In September of 1224, while praying on Mount Alverna, St. Francis received the stigmata, the five wounds of Christ. Arnold Zamora After a week of Pope Francis, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Principal Co- Patron of the Archdiocese and City of San Francisco, this Sunday, October 4 th. This Sunday is supposedly the 27 th Sunday in Ordinary Time in our Church Liturgical calendar but instead we will be using the liturgies for the Mass for the Solemnity of St. Francis. This is due to the Solemnity of the Patron of a diocese having a higher precedence than a Sunday in Ordinary Time in the Table of Liturgical Days. October is the month of Our Lady of Rosary. Our Rosary Brigade group led by Carmen and Domingo Palarca will be praying the Rosary everyday at 6:30 PM at our Pastoral Center Chapel. Everyone is invited to join the group to reflect and pray the Holy Rosary. October is also Columbus Holiday month. I am happy to announce to you that we will be starting the formation of the Knights of Columbus in our parish. Active members will be present the whole month of October as they will be recruiting new members so we can form our own council. Members of the Knights of Columbus will be at every Mass. We are so blessed that we also have the Knights of Holy Name who, despite the fact that their members are decreasing and their ages, increasing, they have maintained their valuable presence in the church. Because of them, we are still able to open the church in the afternoon for people who may want to visit our church and pray. The Knights of Columbus will bring another color and vigor to our community. Join either group! Jack was in front of me coming out of church one day, and the pastor was standing at the door as he always is to shake hands. The priest grabbed Jack by the hand and pulled him aside. The Pastor said to him, 'You need to join the Army of the Lord!' Jack replied, 'I'm already in the Army of the Lord, Father.' Pastor questioned, 'How come I don't see you except at Christmas and Easter?' He whispered back, 'I'm in the secret service.' As some of you already know, I am reorganizing and restructuring our organizations and ministries in the parish starting from our Parish Pastoral Council. I have suspended any meetings until the new council is formed from these categories or committees: a) Spiritual Life, b) Education, c) Outreach, d) Social/Cultural, e) Youth, f) Temporal Affairs. We hope that the council will be well represented, two from each category. Meanwhile, please pray for me! That s how Pope Francis usually ends his speech by asking people to pray for him. At the UN staff audience he added: For the unbelievers, just wish me well. Well, I need both the prayers and well wishes though you are all believers. 5 HOLY NAME SCHOOL PRINCIPAL'S LETTER September 29, 2015 Dear Holy Name Families, I hope your week is off to a great start! Last week was very exciting for our faith as the Pope was visiting in America. Our own Pastor, Father Arnold, was able to concelebrate with Pope Francis last Friday which was very special for our Holy Name community. Last week was an exciting week for our K-2nd students who ended their Johnny Appleseed units with some baking of pies and applesauce. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered their time to help. Thank you also to our Preschool who hosted a wonderful Movie Night last Friday. What energy there was in the Flanagan Center last Friday! We really do love having our preschoolers in our community and enjoy seeing them in our weekly Masses. Last week our 2nd-8th graders were busy with their IOWA testing, and we know they did well. Please remember that homework will pick back up now that testing is over. Our student tours do begin this week. If you know of any interested families who are interested in looking at our school please have them contact the main office. Please see below for our class updates: Preschool - The Red Fish students created yellow star paintings and made a giant sun to celebrate the color yellow. They went for a neighborhood walk and pointed out yellow houses, flowers and insects. They also took turns cutting up bananas, measuring flour and milk and made delicious banana pancakes! The Blue Fish students continued with their Apple theme and created a diagram about the different parts of an apple. Their Dramatic Play area turned into an Apple Orchard and Pumpkin Patch where the students learned about the path from farm-to-table in the growth cycle of apples, pumpkins and winter squash. They ended the week with baking apple turnovers! Kindergarten - Kindergarten baked apple crisps last week and then ate them with their 5th grade buddies for Johnny Appleseed Day. As part of their creation unit they planted green beans and talked about how we are all responsible for helping to take care of the Earth. Kindergartners were also introduced to less than, more than, or equal to through an art project and game that used dice. 1st Grade - First Grade is continuing their study on communities. They made individual books that stated how they could each help their school, city, state, country, and Earth. On Johnny Appleseed Day our first graders made apple pies which they enjoyed eating! 2nd Grade- This was a very busy week for the second graders! They took the IOWA Tests for the first time and did a fantastic job. On Monday the second graders went to our preschool to read them sentences that they had written about friendship. The students also made moccasins and a necklace for Native American Day. During the afternoon on Wednesday, the children watched Pope Francis in Washington D.C. on TV. Father Arnold visited the second graders, taught them a song, and blessed their religion books. On Friday, the children made applesauce and wrote about their experience in honor of Johnny Appleseed. 3rd Grade- 3rd grade concentrated on the IOWA test most of the mornings last week. The students learned to fill in the bubbles on the answer sheet folder and not mark the booklet with the questions. We learned about the Pope's first visit to the U.S. and how Fr. Junipero Serra was canonized last Wednesday. The class did a wordsearch and coloring worksheet about Fr. Serra. The students also studied cause and effect while working in groups and learning about historical events. 4th Grade- In 4th grade last week the students successfully finished all of their IOWA testing. They put on skits in History class to learn about a few different tribes that lived in the northern coastal region of California. In religion class, 4th graders discussed the importance of our conscience and how to use it to avoid temptation by role playing several scenarios and making good choices. 5th Grade- Our fifth graders were busy with their IOWA testing last week. They also began their Mathletics work. In religion class they learned how to locate chapter and verse in the Bible. 6th Grade- In science class 6th graders completed their study of the Scientific Method. In English they learned the difference between show and tell in writing. They found a cartoon monster, wrote a descriptive, showing paragraph about their monster. They then traded these writings and tried to draw each other's monsters based on what they read. The students ended this assignment with a reflection on the importance of showing and telling an audience when writing. 7th Grade- In science class the students started their new chapter that introduced human cells, and they are excited to dive deeper into their understanding of the human body. In religion our students reflected on Pope Francis' visit and the characteristics that make him so Christ-like. 8th Grade- 8th grade also watched Pope Francis' visit and his address to Congress. The students reflected on the meaning behind the Pope's actions and words throughout his visit. In history class the 8th graders studied the southern colonies and focused on the how and why behind the question of slavery. They also discussed the Confederate Flag and what it represents today.
