4 FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora A concerned mother told her 8 year old son to go to church with his dad and advised them not to be late for mass. Whereupon the little boy responded: Its ok mom, the priest said it s Late-are-we Sunday this weekend. Correction: It s Laetare Sunday! It is the Latin word for Rejoice. In this Fourth Sunday of Lent, the church asks us to rejoice. This Sunday is really a reminder for all of us that amidst our Lenten preparation of penance, sacrifice and abstinence, there is that joy and glory that await us at Easter. It is a kind of like giving hope and offering some refreshment. That s why this Sunday is sometimes called as Refreshment Sunday and also Rose Sunday, as reflective of the pink or rose colored vestments the priests wear for the mass. Advent season has its equivalent called Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete is another Latin word for rejoice. The entrance antiphon taken from Isaiah 66:10-11 starts with these words: Laetare, Jerusalem ( Rejoice, O Jerusalem. ) Last Tuesday, March 25 th was the solemnity of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and in my homily I was showing off my little Latin by saying: Fiat mihi in secundum verbum tuum ( Be it done to me according to your word ). These are Mary s words to the angel. I had two years of Latin in High School, two years in College and another two years of Latin in Theology. Latin helped me in the understanding of English grammar and its construction. But like any other language, if you don t use it, you lose it. But I still remember few phrases and some vocabulary. Somebody ed me this joke. Don t take it seriously; it s just for laughs and not to offend anyone. I would never use this in my homily. The Pope was finishing his sermon. He ended it with the Latin phrase, "Tuti Homini" - Blessed be Mankind. A women's rights group approached the pope the next day. They noticed that the Pope blessed all Mankind, but not Womankind. The next day, after his sermon, the pope concluded by saying, "Tuti Homini, et Tuti Femini"... Blessed be Mankind and Womankind. The next day, a gay-rights group approached the Pope. They said that they noticed that he blessed mankind and womankind, and asked if he could also bless gay people. The Pope said Sure. The next day, the Pope concluded his sermon with, "Tuti Homini, et Tuti Femini, et Tuti Fruiti." Today s Second Collection if for St. Vincent de Paul Society. The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Editor s Note: Take a deep breath and pat yourself on the back. We have now gone through three of the four Apostolic constitutions resulting from the Second Vatican Council: Lumen Gentium (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church), Dei Verbum (Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation), and Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy). Can you believe we began this journey back in December of 2012? The purpose of this retrospective has always been to present the Second Vatican Council and its teachings in unfiltered, bite-sized pieces over time so that one can learn directly from the divinelyinspired source. I hope you ve enjoyed the journey as much as I have. So where do we go from here? Well, there is the fourth constitution yet to be covered. It is called Gaudium et Spes (the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World). Gaudium et Spes means Joy and Hope in Latin and was the last document to be promulgated by the Second Vatican Council. It was approved by a vote of 2,307 to 75 of the bishops assembled at the council and was promulgated by Pope Paul VI on December 7, 1965, the day the council ended. Gaudium et Spes presents an overview of the Catholic Church's teachings regarding humanity's relationship to society, with special emphasis on economics, poverty, social justice, culture, science, technology and ecumenism. Are you ready to journey a little farther with me? If so, please read on and God bless. Question: To who is Gaudium et Spes directed and written? Answer from Gaudium et Spes: The joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ. Indeed, nothing genuinely human fails to raise an echo in their hearts. For theirs is a community composed of men. United in Christ, they are led by the Holy Spirit in their journey to the Kingdom of their Father and they have welcomed the news of salvation which is meant for every man. That is why this community realizes that it is truly linked with mankind and its history by the deepest of bonds. Hence this Second Vatican Council, having probed more profoundly into the mystery of the Church, now addresses itself without hesitation, not only to the sons of the Church and to all who invoke the name of Christ, but to the whole of humanity. For the council yearns to explain to everyone how it conceives of the presence and activity of the Church in the world of today. HOLY NAME TREE OF LIFE The Holy Name Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves is located at the back of the Church. Donors can have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. The MAXIMUM number of characters per leaf to 5 lines, 25 characters per line including spaces. Leaf color choices are Gold, Silver or Bronze. Students participated in various parts of the Mass and sang along with the music ensemble. Thank you to Mr. Fritz Adarne, on piano, Khail, on clarinet, and Gabryl (6A), on violin for your gifts of music and song, which added immensely to the beauty of our Mass. Thank you also to Gabryl for playing the piano and leading us in song during last Thursday's school Mass. We appreciate your talents that you share with us. He had never seen a sunrise or marveled at a sunset. His world was one of perpetual darkness and dependency. For all of his life he had been a burden to his family unable to shepherd the flock or do any work. As he grew to manhood he began to sense his family s thinly veiled resentment of him. Sobs of anguish would silently well up as he realized he had been a curse upon them. When he was old enough and brave enough he left home. He made his way into the city and now was on his own. Becoming a beggar had given him his first small measure of independence. He jingled the coins in his hand and called out to attract the attention of the approaching group of voices. The blind beggar s sharp ears heard one of the men say: Rabbi, was it his sin or his parents that caused him to be born blind? The men were now standing directly in front of him and the beggar pocketed his few coins and cupped both hands together, holding them up in supplication. Alms? he begged, using his most hopeful tone of voice. Jesus looked down into the unseeing eyes of the beggar and felt all his sorrow. This man was born blind to let the works of God show forth in him, Jesus said, reaching out to touch his face. The disciples watched in silence as Jesus stooped down to crouch next to the beggar. He scooped up some dirt and spit on it to make mud. With his fingertips Jesus carefully smeared the mud on the man s eyelids. The beggar sensed something wondrous was taking place and he began to tremble, his breath coming in expectant gasps. Jesus stood away from him and ordered Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam the one who has been sent, The beggar uncupped his empty hands and carefully touched his eyelids. He felt the mud. The gathering crowd escorted the blind man to the pool and watched him kneel at the edge. Dipping his hands into the cool water the blind man bowed forward to wash. He scrubbed at the mud and plunged his face in the water to rinse. The coolness was always refreshing and he let his face float like a boat bottom in the dark water. Suddenly a bright green light exploded in his head. The shock of it made him splash out to protect himself. The green light swirled into a rainbow and then rained down in crystals of color. Gasping and sputtering he lifted his joy-filled face from the water and clutching at the robes of the man at his side, the beggar opened his eyes to behold the smiling face of Jesus. Jesus Christ, God on earth, finds a blind beggar and changes him in an instant. Jesus takes the man from despair to exquisite joy. He gives the man the gift of sight, the gift of light. The blind man did let God s works show through him. He teaches us that Jesus brings us a gift of light too. It is the light of understanding; that Jesus is the light of the world. Many are blind to this truth. To be able to truly see this we must receive his anointing and go wash the mud of sin away from our eyes. Having done this, we can open our new eyes of understanding and behold the smiling face of Jesus.
