Arnold Zamora Palm Sunday is April Fool s Day? No, I am not doing a definition here. It just so happen that this year, we celebrate Palm Sunday on April Fool s Day, a day when many people make all kinds of jokes and act foolish. But don t be fooled and don t be a fool. This Sunday is not time for practical pranks, hoaxes and funny tricks. It is the start of the holiest week of the year. Palm Sunday is the start of Holy Week. Entering Holy Week does not mean you cannot smile or make jokes and have some fun. In fact, we still greet each other Happy Palm Sunday! We join the happy crowd shouting Hosanna to the King of Kings. Holy Week is in fact a Happy Week. Even on Good Friday, we can still greet Happy Good Friday! That greeting on Good Friday is certainly an odd greeting. Calling the Friday of the Holy Week good is already odd. Calling it happy is like adding more insult to injury. For what is really good when you cannot eat meat and even if you are vegetarian, you are still asked to fast on this day. That Friday, Jesus died. The Son of God was brutally murdered that day by His own people. This Friday itself is good. Why is it called Good? It is because we see the ultimate goodness of God. As St. Paul said, God died for us not when we were His friends, but when we were His enemies. God loves us even when we do not love Him, even when we are not lovable, even when we do not love. Only God can love this way naturally. Only God can knock us out of our seats with this surprise. This Friday is called good because good triumphed over evil. The Lord turned the evil done to Him into the source of our ultimate good, into our redemption from evil, into our freedom from death. The cross became the source of grace. This Friday is good because we, who follow the crucified and risen Lord, are commissioned to be good people and to do good deeds to others. The Lord showed us how to live by showing us how to die. Goodness should never shy away from persecution. Goodness should not cow in fear before death. Goodness is the path from life to death to life eternal. There are good reasons then to be happy on Good Friday. May this Good Friday make us Good persons because we have received the ultimate goodness from the loving and merciful God. Two parishioners were proud of the goodness of their respective pastors. Clara: My pastor is so good he can talk on any subject for an hour. Sarah: That's nothing! My pastor can talk for an hour without a subject!

4 COMING UP: GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION During this season of Lent, every Christian thinks of the Holy Land, but the reality of the Holy Land today often does not always match the scenes in our imagination. The Holy Father reminded us in his 2010 postsynodal apostolic exhortation Verbum Domini, The more we appreciate the universality and the uniqueness of Christ s person, the more we look in gratitude to the land where Jesus was born, where he lived and where he gave his life for us. Christians who dwell in the land of Jesus are called to serve not only as a beacon of faith for the universal Church, but also as a leaven of harmony, wisdom, and equilibrium in the life of a society which traditionally has been, and continues to be, pluralistic, multi-ethnic and multi-religious. During Pope Benedict s visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, he said, The Gospel reassures us that God can make all things new, that history need not be repeated, that memories can be healed, that the bitter fruits of recrimination and hostility can be overcome, and that a future of justice, peace, prosperity and cooperation can arise from every man and woman, for the whole human family, and in a special way for the people who dwell in this land so dear to the heart of the Savior. Each year, Catholics from around the world are invited to support Christianity in the Holy Land by making a donation to the Good Friday Collection. The Collection everywhere remains the ordinary and indispensable means of promoting the life of Christians in that beloved Land. Please be generous. Holy Land Christians, along with all the clergy and religious working there, deeply appreciate your help. May God bless you and your families, and keep you always in His loving care. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend George Niederauer Archbishop of San Francisco HOLY NAME TREE OF LIFE The Holy Name Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves is located at the back of the Church. Donors can have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. We suggest setting a MAXIMUM number of characters per leaf to 5 lines, 25 characters per line including spaces. Leaf color choices are Gold, Silver or Bronze. Please send engraving request with check payment (payable to Holy Name Parish) or drop by the church office, th Ave. San Francisco, CA For more information, please call (415) PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD S PASSION WE DON T GO ALONE We aren t fond of the words humble and obedient. When was the last time you read an obituary saying the deceased was a humble and obedient person? No, we tend to list degrees, titles, achievements, and so on. By all accounts Jesus was not successful in the way we generally mean it. He had enough education to be able to read the scriptures in the synagogue (Luke 4:16 20), and he was just a village carpenter by trade, trained by Joseph. He came from Nazareth, not an important city like Jerusalem. Jesus wandered around the countryside preaching, following in the tradition of Jewish prophets. The crowds were mostly ordinary people, not the rich and the powerful. A moment of apparent triumph came on Palm Sunday, when the crowds in Jerusalem acclaimed him as king. Many were probably hoping he would be a new military leader who would overthrow the Romans occupying the land, and restore Jewish life and pride. This triumph was brief. In a few days the same crowds turned on him in bitter rejection. He wasn t what they wanted. Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, didn t know what to make of him. Jesus was obviously no common criminal. He spoke with truthfulness and was not cowed by Pilate s power. Yet to keep the rabble quiet, Pilate finally washed his hands of the whole business and put Jesus to death. Ever since that first Good Friday, those who pass through the darkest nights know they don t go alone. For each of us Jesus willingly entered the pain and sorrow of humanity. For us he allowed himself to fall into the abyss of death. The Father let his Son count the milestones along the way of despair. There are no dead-end streets anymore. For us, at the end of every road, there shines the light of Christ. Copyright 2011, World Library Publications. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although the procession with palms has an unforgettable grip on our imagination, the real emphasis of this day s liturgy is contained in its name: The Sunday of the Lord s Passion. Since 1955, the old custom of a blessing of palms with procession of the people has marked the entry of the Church into a time so rich that it is called Holy Week. The center of today s liturgy, however, is the solemn reading of the Passion, this year taken from Mark s Gospel. Our community is to be transformed by its celebration of Easter, and so this week everything is made new. Soon, the bishop will celebrate the Chrism Mass when the holy oils for the sacraments will be completely replenished and blessed, and transported from the cathedral to every parish. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon of springtime. Be on the lookout later this week for this paschal moon, rising in the east at the precise moment the sun sets in the west. Imagine: a day when there is not a single moment when the earth is not bathed in light from the heavens. We are on the threshold of the three great days (Triduum): Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, beginning at sunset on Thursday when the parish gathers in response to the Lord s command: Do this in memory of me. 5 When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity, and he told his followers: ÂZ äx à{xå áéåx yééw çéâüáxääxáaê - Mark 6:37 ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN FRANCISCO 2012 ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL Each year at this time, our Archbishop asks us to join his efforts to provide programs and ministries to the people of the Archdiocese of San Francisco through our participation in the Archbishop s Annual Appeal. We are called by God to be good stewards of all that He has given us, and this Appeal is an excellent way to respond to that call. We are all missionaries to proclaim and witness the Gospel. St. Paul urges us: Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good (Hebrew 10:24-25). We are disciples echoing the words of the Jesus: "I am the bread of life; he who comes to me will never be hungry; he who believes in me will never thirst". When we reach out to help others, we gain the bread of life. As good stewards of the mysteries and gifts of Jesus Christ, I humbly ask you to join me in making a generous gift to the 2012 Archbishop s Annual Appeal and to be the light for so many in our community. A brochure with more information about this year s Annual Appeal was sent to you by mail. I encourage you to use that brochure to send in your donation or simply cut and fill out this form, attach your donation check, and mail or drop off to: Holy Name, th Ave. San Francisco, CA To date, we have received $14, (25%) in pledges towards our goal of $55,400. Thank you for your generosity and continued support. - Fr. Arnold E. Zamora CUT HERE Name: Address: Phone No.: Pledge or one-time donation amount: For More Information regarding the Archbishop s Annual Appeal: Please contact the parish office at (415) or the Archdiocesan Office of Development at (415) or development@sfarchdiocese.org ABOUT OUR COVER: Palm branches have been used by all nations as an emblem of joy and victory over enemies; in Christianity as a sign of victory over the flesh and the world according to Psalm 91:13, "Justus ut palma florebit"; hence especially associated with the memory of the martyrs. The palms blessed on Palm Sunday were used in the procession of the day, then taken home by the faithful and used as a sacramental. They were preserved in prominent places in the house, in the barns, and in the fields, and thrown into the fire during storms. Lent is a chance to take stock and imagine a changed world Private spiritual discipline during Lent means little without the desire to transform the world for the good of all. Lent begins with a man in a desert. This man has extraordinary powers and knows himself to be of special importance to his God. In the desert, he is facing choices about what that means for the rest of his life. He is alone, and in a semi-starved, almost hallucinatory condition, but the choices he makes here will not be dismissed when he returns to "normal" life. He chooses not to use his power for his own gratification. Instead, he chooses to put himself and his power at the disposal of God, for the use of others. He faces three temptations, like in all the best stories. The first is to turn stones into bread, to satisfy his gnawing hunger. The second is to get power over people, and the third is to make himself invulnerable. All of these things, he rejects. Later on in life, we see the consequences of these choices. Jesus can produce miraculous food but for others, not himself. He can influence people, but only if they choose to believe in him; and he accepts the death on the cross that brings the presence of God into all those situations of unavoidable human vulnerability. This is how the New Testament tells it, and that's why Jesus's followers "do" Lent. For a few weeks, we try to see that the world doesn't crumble if we don't have everything we want; we try to make ourselves and our resources that little bit more available for ends other than our own. Whether you're a Christian or not, this choice that Jesus makes in the desert has to be made. Are we going to live our lives simply trying to get as much of what we want as we possibly can, whatever the cost to others, or are we going to imagine a different way? It's a particularly apposite question at the moment, when we hear daily about people who are "giving things up" because they have no choice: parents giving up meals so that their children can eat, for example. These hard times are going to last much longer than Lent, but this is a chance to take stock and imagine a changed world, in which, perhaps, the rich can actually manage with far less than they thought they needed; in which, perhaps, poverty is not treated as a misdemeanor on the part of the poor, but as a failure of society, to be remedied by all of us. Jesus's decision in the desert led him into several years of working with and speaking out for the people his society and ours thought unimportant: sick people, poor people, women, children. The people in power didn't like to be challenged in Jesus's day, any more than they do now, and so Jesus faced scorn, derision and, ultimately, death, for his choice to live by different rules. That's a far cry from giving up chocolate or coffee for Lent, but there is really no point at all in a Lenten discipline that isn't about reimagining the world so that it revolves less about our own desires and more about the good of all. When Lent ends, that vision of the world doesn't. It's a world that is less about what I want, and more about what we all need, in which the good life for me is unimaginable unless it is also the good life for you.
