3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora There are two wonderful things happening in our parish this weekend. First, on Saturday evening is our New Parishioners Dinner. This is something new to our parish that we hope to keep as a tradition of welcoming new members to our community each year. We have invited new parishioners who registered within the last three years to this potluck dinner hosted by the different Ministries of our parish. The new parishioners will be introduced to our parish leadership and to the different ministries. I truly believe that welcoming new parishioners can have a tremendous impact on the success of the stewardship educational efforts in our parish. New parishioners can bring gifts to the parish that had never been present before new talents, new experiences, new ideas and new commitments. In welcoming new parishioners, we have the opportunity to grow into a new and better parish. They are like new gifts to our parish that God sends us. We thank the members of our ministries for their support and special thanks to Carl Vengco, Ricky Inting and Maria Sabater for coordinating this event. The other big thing this weekend is of course our Stewardship Renewal this Sunday. We have a special Mass at 10:29 AM to coincide with the date October 29 th. Parishioner Bill Bogdan will give a talk before the Mass and after my short homily. We are asking everyone to commit their time, talent and treasure to our parish and Mr. Bogdan will tell us how to do it. From Monday to Friday, before the priest opens the Pastoral Center at 7:00 AM for the 7:30 AM Mass, sisters Amy and Tina Tong are already sweeping the fallen leaves around the Grotto of our Lady and the St. Francis Garden. After the Mass, they go straight inside the church to clean the candle receptacles that have been used and replenish them with new votive candles. Tina and Amy even in their advanced age are showing us what Stewardship is all about. I know there are still some other parishioners whose deeds go unnoticed and yet they continue to live the Stewardship way of life. Let me say this again, Stewardship is not about money. Well, it is partly about money, but it s not all about money. I remember a story of a little girl who became restless in church as the priest s homily dragged on and on. Finally, she leaned over to her mother and whispered, Mummy, if we give him the money now, will he let us go? Stewardship is giving what you owe to God. We owe God not money but our hearts. It s not what the popular commercial what s in your wallet? asks. The question is What s in your heart? MEMORIAL MASS FOR THE HOLY SOULS Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery invites you to remember all the faithful departed in prayer at Holy Cross Mausoleum Chapel in Colma, Saturday, November 4th at 11 AM. This Mass begins our month-long commemoration of the Holy Souls. Rev Arturo Albano, Pastor of St. Mary s Cathedral, will be the main celebrant. Please join us for refreshments and fellowship following the Mass. St. Peter s Annual Alumni Memorial Mass will be held on Sunday, November 5th at 2 PM at St. Peter s Church at 24th and Alabama Streets. The Mass will be celebrated by Father Agudo. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Schoolyard parking available. 5 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Nguyen Van Mah is one of eight sons. In 1978 his poor farming parents had to decide which one of their 12 children would be sent on a boat from Vietnam. They knew there was a great risk that they would be sending their son to his death on the South China Sea. At 4.00 am a knock on the door of the family home came and Mah said his goodbyes. He has not seen his parents since. Mah was blindfolded and traveled in the back of a truck for eight hours. He was led through the jungle to a beach where the blindfold was removed. Mah told me that sometimes at this moment people are shot by evil traders who collect the money without any intention of dispatching a boat. That families never hear from their children is no surprise. Mah told me, "We were lucky, we made it off the beach." There were 29 adults in a boat built for 10. Inadequately prepared for the two week trip, all the boat people were sick, hungry, and exposed. Thai pirates attacked their boat, executed three men and raped all the women on board. They were to bury another six people at sea who died from the effects of the journey. On sighting land, the remaining 20 people in Mah's boat thought hope had arrived. But the Malaysian navy, under orders to fire on all Vietnamese boats, forced it to return to international waters. Mah told me, "At this point I almost lost my faith in God and human beings. I was going to die." The boat began to take water and was noticed by a Dutch trading ship which rescued them and deposited them in the Philippines. Mah migrated 12 months later and is now the local doctor in a country community that could not get a doctor for two years. Isaiah tells us today "You shall not wrong or oppress a resident alien for you were aliens in the land of Egypt." Jesus tells us in the Gospel that the love of God is fulfilled precisely in as much as we love our neighbor. For many in the Western World immigration is a difficult issue. Until recently, most western countries have been good in offering hospitality to people who have chosen to leave, or have had to flee their country of birth. Given our comparative wealth this hospitality is entirely appropriate. And it is also appropriate for our countries to have a threshold number for the sake of the common good. In today s Gospel, however, Jesus does not promise us that the love of God and neighbor is going to cost us nothing. Jesus law of love involves sacrifice for us individually and as a nation. Through the acceptance of this teaching we are committing ourselves to being our neighbor's keeper. In another part of the same Gospel, Jesus tells us that those to whom much has been given, much will be required. Sadly, many of us want the good life for ourselves, while doing very little to help other countries become more livable, and then we can reject people who want to share in the blessings we have worked for and inherited. The Gospel of Matthew gives us the story of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus being forced to flee Israel for Egypt as refugees. If the Holy Family were coming our way these days, they might be sent back to King Herod. May this Eucharist see in us a change of heart that enables our faith to act justly toward all people everywhere. May our goodness and hospitality mirror on earth the welcome we hope to enjoy from Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in the kingdom which is promised to all, irrespective of where any of us has been born. The big-spending sugar shock holiday is a long way removed from Thursday s grateful remembrance of the souls who are hidden from our sight, but alive to Christ. Old pagan superstitions might find us holding our breath when going by the graveyard, whereas others might actually go to the cemetery to tend the family graves, to share good food, and remember dear ones. Nowhere does a culture embrace this day as fully as in Mexico. The Day of the Dead is a national holiday that unfolds over three full days. For three thousand years, the indigenous people of Mexico have been mocking death in an annual festival, and the invading Spaniards were shocked at the spectacle. To the Aztecs, life was a dream, and death was the entry into full life. Skulls were thus a symbol of joy and release from life s sorrows. The missionaries found all this a bit creepy, but they moved the three-day feast from August to synchronize it with the Christian calendar. So today, graves are decorated, altars are built in the home to honor the family dead, children feast on candy skulls, and people dress up in elaborate skeleton outfits. The devout spend hours in the cemetery, and there is a lively sense of the communion of saints, the living and the dead. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
