While the Council was in session, the Servant of God, Paul VI, instituted this day of worldwide prayer to God the Father, asking him to continue to send workers for his Church (cf. Mt9:38). The problem of having a sufficient number of priests, as the Pope stated at the time, has an immediate impact on all of the faithful: not simply because they depend on it for the religious future of Christian society, but also because this problem is the precise and inescapable indicator of the vitality of faith and love of individual parish and diocesan communities, and the evidence of the moral health of Christian families. Wherever numerous vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life are to be found, that is where people are living the Gospel with generosity (Paul VI, Radio Message, 11 April 1964).

In the scriptures Jesus comforts those who mourn, as in Matthew 11:28-29: Come to me, all of you whoare tired from carrying heavy loads, I will give you rest...and you will find rest. In the same Gospel, Jesus reassures us of God s solace: Happy are those who mourn; God will comfort them! (5:4). We as Christians follow this example. CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS Next Sunday s Second Collection is for the Catholic Home Missions. One way the Catholic Home Missions Appeal works to support home mission dioceses in the United States is by supporting seminarian formation in poor dioceses. Often home mission priests and lay ministers require special training to attend to the unique needs of their faith communities. Your support is needed. We belong to the Shepherd. His life is the source of our life. One part of this relationship is firm God s part. The Father has entrusted us to the Son, and the Son will not let go of our hand. The other part of this relationship depends on us, of course. In today s Gospel, Jesus assumes our open-hearted good will. My sheep hear my voice... and they follow me. This hearing and following is a daily undertaking that implies responsibility. Take Paul and Barnabas, for example. They moved ever closer to the reality that salvation was also meant for those members of the flock who did not yet know God s saving power. The Gentiles were the sheep known by the Shepherd. Paul could finally see that now was the acceptable time for them to know the Shepherd. Now the circle could be completed. Finally, those who were known and loved by the God of Jesus could know and follow the God of Jesus. There will never be a last chapter to this story of salvation. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

4 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Our thoughts and prayers go to the victims of the Boston Marathon explosion. It s unimaginable that such display of terror happened in the midst of a fun run at the finish line of glory and jubilation. The fun day turned into a sad day. For some of our parishioners, their joyous time of Easter turned into a moment of sadness and grieving with the passing away of their loved ones right after Easter. We express our sympathy to them as we remember the departed souls and their relatives in our weekend Mass intentions. They were Mattias Orque, Antonio Pilapil, Poy Pauline Wong and Mary Forese, a member of the Senior Club and a long time parishioner of Holy Name. You may not know here name but it s hard for you to miss her face because she was always present in many church activities as well as at social functions like square dancing. In the midst of death, we also welcome the gift of new life. We welcome Kylie Wong who was baptized last April 6. And we most especially welcome the birth of Cres Payumo s twin grandbabies. With this excitement and new role as a grandmother, Cres has temporarily given up her responsibilities as our Environment Committee chairperson. Stepping in for Cres is our architect Eris Rodriquez. Eris together with our other faithful ladies: Cecilia Bermudez, Pat Relampagos and Lina Hidalgo and with the occasional help of Norma Aguirre and Maria Rubino continue to work on beautifying our church environment. I acknowledge and admire their dedication in providing flower arrangements for the church and even waking up early in the morning on Saturdays in order to pick and buy the nicest flowers they could find. It reminded me of a flower vendor who was normally quite successful at unloading his last few bunches of flowers. I happened to pass by his shop on my way home from my dayoff. The vendor said, "How about a nice bunch of roses to surprise your wife?" "I don't have a wife," I replied gruffly. "Well then, how about some beautiful carnations for your girlfriend?" suggested the vendor, without missing a beat. "I don't have a girlfriend," I snapped. "You lucky fellow!" the vendor said, as he broke into a big smile. "Buy both bunches to celebrate!" It s just for a laugh. It s not a true story. I just adapted it. Your wife and girlfriend deserve a bunch of flowers and some kind words of love. As one the old mantra goes, I would rather have one rose and a kind word from a friend while I m here than a whole truck load when I m gone. LEGACY We want to give our children what we didn t have; but let s make sure we give them what we did have: our faith. IGNATIUS SPEECH TOURNAMENT Last Saturday, the following nine 7th and 8th grade students attended the annual St. Ignatius Speech Tournament: Raina Ng, Katarina Spisz, Veronica Mei, Brandon Leung, Tianna Siu, Tomas Palpallatoc, Alexa Lim, Alisa Nascimento and Jack Miller. Each student participated in three rounds of speeches, and 8th grader Alisa Nascimento made it into the final round. She won a finalist trophy in the Dramatic Interpretation division! The Holy Name Speech Team has practiced weekly, with their team coach Mrs. Nolan, for several months. We congratulate them for their hard work and success.
