3 COMING UP! All Saints Day - Masses will be at 7:30 am, 9:00 am and 7:30 pm, all in the Church. This is not a Holy Day of Obligation. All Souls Day - Masses will be at 7:30 am and 9:00 am in the Church. Families may bring a picture of their deceased loved ones to be displayed during the Mass, and can take the pictures home immediately after. November - A Special Mass will be held for those Deceased Parishioners from this past year (Nov Nov. 2010) on Saturday, November 13 at 11:00 am in the Church. Families may bring a picture of their recently deceased loved one to be displayed during the Mass, and can take the pictures home immediately after. LEGION OF MARY All Auxiliary members are invited to the 9:00 am Mass for the Deceased Legionaries in the Chapel on Saturday, November 13. At 9:30 am there will be an Auxiliary Function in the Pastoral Center Meeting Room. We provide comfort and aid to persons who come to the Pastoral Center seeking assistance with food, shelter, clothing, or travel needs. We provide financial help to SVDP Programs and other conferences dealing directly with persons in need. Through the SVDP twinning program, we also provide financial assistance to SVDP conferences in the Philippines and Holy Land. If you know of any parishioner who may need our assistance, please notify the staff at the Pastoral Center so we can provide the assistance needed. 4 HOLY NAME OF JESUS TREE OF LIFE PROJECT To mark Holy Name of Jesus Church s 85th Anniversary, a Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves was installed at the back of the Church. Donors will have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. It is well known by all who gather here that we are constantly dealing with many repairs needed in our aging buildings (circa 1941, 1949 and 1964). We are confident that the funds raised from the Tree of Life will provide for some of the necessary expenses that we anticipate for the future. The Holy Name Tree of Life was unveiled and blessed last Sunday at the October 10, 2010, at the 85th Anniversary Mass and Pastor s Installation presided by Most Rev. Robert McElroy. (415) Dear Holy Name Families, So many of our families had a wonderful time last Saturday, October 23, at our annual Fright Fest. From 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., the gym and Flanagan Center was a bevy of activity. Adults and children played games, won prizes, ate a variety of food including a delicious spaghetti dinner, danced, played Bingo led by Bingo Master, Glenn Leong (Matthew 7B) and watched the Giants win the National League Pennant. This event was so successful because of Norma Tse (Adam 2 nd gr), Myra Alcaide (Marisol 7B & Gabriel 2 nd gr), and Lily Hui (Katelyn 2 nd gr & Kelsey K ). They had a fabulous team of chairpersons who organized and ran all of the booths and activities with barely a hitch. In spite of the weather and last minute changes, all of these parents joined forces to make it a huge success. Thank you each and every one of you for your hard work and effort. On Monday, October 25, the students welcomed Father Arnold Zamora as our Pastor. Thank you to Mr. Eiras who practiced with each class and with the whole student body before Father Arnold was led into the gym for his celebration ceremony. Students sang to Father Arnold, and he reciprocated by singing to them. After school, the teachers and staff members continued the celebration in our Art Room. Thank you Ms. Nora Murphy and Mrs. Babs Kleinhenz for the lovely decorations and display of food, which was made by teachers and staff members. Last Friday, October 22, both 5 th grade classes went to the Museum of Modern Art. Later in the day, I received a call from one of the docents. She actually called me to tell me that our 5 th grade students were just delightful. She said they were engaged, listened to each other, asked good questions and made good points. When our students left MOMA, the docents who had led the groups, got together and talked about our wonderful Holy Name students. Thank you, Mrs. Carr, Miss Gallagher and 5 th grade students for representing Holy Name School so well. God bless you. 5 GETTING TO KNOW US FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora It s Halloween weekend! When you think of Halloween, you immediately think of trick or treat and people especially kids wearing different costumes. When you hear the word Halloween, you think of a day of being scary and spooky. I m glad it falls on a weekend to remind us that it is also a day to be holy. In fact, Hallow means saints and een is a contraction of eve of evening. Halloween is the eve of All Saints Day, November 1st. We are called to be saints, to be holy. We are called to be parishioners of Holy Name of Jesus Parish. And remember, charity is the perfection of holiness. The more loving you are, the more holy you become. A cabbie picks up a nun. She gets into the cab and the cab driver won t stop staring at her. She asks him why he is staring and he replies, I have a question to ask you but I don t want to offend you. She answers, My dear son, you cannot offend me. When you re as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about everything. I m sure that there s nothing you could say or ask that I would find offensive. Well, I ve always had a fantasy to have a nun kiss me. She responds, Well, let s see what we can do about that: #1, you have to be single and #2 you must be a Catholic. The cab driver is very excited and says, Yes, I am single and I m Catholic too. OK the nun says Pull into the next alley. He does and the nun fulfills his fantasy with a kiss But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts crying. My dear child, said the nun, why are you crying? Forgive me sister, but I have sinned. I lied, I must confess, I m married and I m Jewish. The nun says, That s OK, my name is Kevin and I m on my way to a Halloween party. Our life here on earth is a journey towards the grand Halloween party, our party with the Hallows, our communion with all the saints in heaven. Enjoy the party! Many of us, if we were asked whether or not the goal of our prayer and spiritual life was to get to know God better, would most likely answer, Of course. But how many of us would think that another purpose of our prayer and spiritual life was for God to get to know us better? We think of God as the One who views the whole universe as a grain of sand. How can God get to know us better? The author of Wisdom reminds us that the Lord is a lover of souls (Wisdom 11:26) and lovers, if they do nothing else, are always seeking out their beloved, wanting to know them better, knowing yet overlooking their faults, wanting nothing but to love them more and more. In today s Gospel Jesus embodies this God whose imperishable spirit is in all things. Not only does he allow the extreme sinner Zaccheus to speak with him, but Jesus seeks him out, up in a tree. And then losing his head with love for his brother in the faith of Abraham Jesus becomes a part of his life by insisting that Zaccheus take him into his own house, the house he lived in through ill-gotten, sinful gains as a tax collector. Wisdom and Luke both tell us that God is willing to walk right into our frail sinfulness in order to know us better, love us more, and bring us in forgiveness to salvation. Zaccheus Copyright, J. S. Interfaith Vigil: A Call for a Vision of Hospitality & Liberty at the time of the Federal Court Hearing on Arizona Immigration Law SB 1070 On Monday, November 1 at 8:00 AM, the vigil will begin at St. Patrick s Church, 756 Mission St., San Francisco, (between 3rd & 4th Streets).
