3 FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora The story is told about a little girl who asked her mother: Mom, why is my hair black and your hair is gray? The mother responded: My child, every time a child misbehaves, the mother s hair turns gray! Oh, now I know why grandma s hairs have all turned gray! said the little girl. Happy Mother s Day! Mothers hairs turn gray because they worry so much about how they can take care of their children. They make a lot of sacrifices so that the ones they love will have a better life. Mothers make our world go round! Many of us were able to watch the movie Mary of Nazareth last Sunday that was sponsored by our parish. We saw the selfless sacrifice of Mary and the anguish and her endurance to see her son crucified to death. The movie ended with Mary seeing the Risen Lord again and Jesus saying the word Mother. I love the way the movie ended just with the word Mother because it said it all about Mary. Mary is the Mother of God and the mother of us all! The Gabriel Project of the Archdiocese of San Francisco is a program that provides services to needy new mothers and abortion-atrisk moms. I am happy to announce to you that our parish is one of the parishes in the Archdiocese that have participated in The Gabriel Project with Rose Lo Tang as parish coordinator and with new angels: Cecilia Bermudez, Alexandria Eshabarr, Cathy Gilmore, Nanette Ramos, Jerry Back, Eris Rodriguez and supportive parishioners. For any inquiry, ask Rose Tang or any of our angels. A man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away. As he got out of his car he noticed a young girl sitting on the curb sobbing. He asked her what was wrong and she replied, "I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother. But I only have seventy-five cents, and a rose costs two dollars." The man smiled and said, "Come on in with me. I'll buy you a rose." He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother's flowers. As they were leaving he offered the girl a ride home. She said, "Yes, please! You can take me to my mother." She directed him to a cemetery, where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave. The man returned to the flower shop, canceled the wire order, picked up a bouquet and drove the two hundred miles to his mother's house. HOLY NAME TREE OF LIFE The Holy Name Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves is located at the back of the Church. Donors can have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. We suggest setting a MAXIMUM number of characters per leaf to 5 lines, 25 characters per line including spaces. Leaf color choices are Gold, Silver or Bronze. Answer from Gaudium et Spes: Meanwhile the conviction grows not only that humanity can and should increasingly consolidate its control over creation, but even more, that it devolves on humanity to establish a political, social and economic order which will growingly serve man and help individuals as well as groups to affirm and develop the dignity proper to them. As a result many persons are quite aggressively demanding those benefits of which with vivid awareness they judge themselves to be deprived either through injustice or unequal distribution. Nations on the road to progress, like those recently made independent, desire to participate in the goods of modern civilization, not only in the political field but also economically, and to play their part freely on the world scene. Still they continually fall behind while very often their economic and other dependence on wealthier nations advances more rapidly. Question: While an increasing number of people have access to the fruits of a modern world, what ironies become present at the same time? Answer from Gaudium et Spes: People hounded by hunger call upon those better off. Where they have not yet won it, women claim for themselves an equity with men before the law and in fact. Laborers and farmers seek not only to provide for the necessities of life, but to develop the gifts of their personality by their labors and indeed to take part in regulating economic, social, political and cultural life. Now, for the first time in human history all people are convinced that the benefits of culture ought to be and actually can be extended to everyone. Still, beneath all these demands lies a deeper and more widespread longing: persons and societies thirst for a full and free life worthy of man; one in which they can subject to their own welfare all that the modern world can offer them so abundantly. In addition, nations try harder every day to bring about a kind of universal community. Since all these things are so, the modern world shows itself at once powerful and weak, capable of the noblest deeds or the foulest; before it lies the path to freedom or to slavery, to progress or retreat, to brotherhood or hatred. Moreover, man is becoming aware that it is his responsibility to guide aright the forces which he has unleashed and which can enslave him or minister to him. Catholics have the right to receive the sacraments if they opportunely ask for them, are properly disposed, and are not prohibited by law from receiving them. But with every right comes a corresponding obligation, and this right to receive the sacraments is no exception. Canon states that pastors of souls have the duty to ensure that those who ask for the sacraments are prepared for their reception. In the case of parents who present their infant child for baptism, it is the parents who must be adequately prepared, as they are asking for a sacrament on behalf of another person who is too young to request it for himself. Godparents must be prepared in order to fulfill their roles in the Baptismal Rite and in assisting the parents in their duties of raising the child in the practice of the Catholic faith. Holy Name Parish Baptismal Prep classes are held once a month every 1st Saturday of the month at 2 PM in the Pastoral Center, th Ave. (415) Pre-registration is required. A Prayer for all Mothers, Thank you, Lord, that you fill a mother s heart with love, that you have instilled in her very being the need to protect her children if at all possible, Thank you for giving her the gift of nurturing her children, of teaching them, of comforting them, for feeding them and making a safe place for them. For guiding them to be all that God has created them to be. Fill every mother with love, wisdom and endurance, with strength and patience and joy. Give them ability to forgive again and again. Enable her to rely on You and call upon You, because You will give her all she needs. In Your precious and all powerful name, Amen. Thank you, Mrs. Nolan and Sister Esther Ling, for practicing with them for the Confirmation Mass. Bishop Ignatius Wang, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of San Francisco, was the celebrant at the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Friday, May 2. Thank you to the Confirmandi who were wonderful. I hope you were touched by the Holy Spirit who will comfort you during life. Many of the non-catholic, 8th grade students supported their classmates by attending this beautiful ceremony. Thank you very much. Our parents were so pleased with the Mass and expressed their appreciation to Mrs. Nolan after the Mass. Alumni, Alisa Nascimento, designed the program, Confirmed in the Spirit. Thank you, Alisa. Last Thursday evening, at our Parent Guild meeting, the 8th grade students performed a few songs from The Wizard of Oz. Everyone seemed to be very impressed with the talent and enthusiasm of our students and are looking forward to the full production on Friday evening, May 16, and Saturday evening, May 17.
