4 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Everybody is talking about globalization: global economy, global warming, global market, global target, etc. But what about global prayer? This weekend on the Feast of Corpus Christi, Pope Francis will lead millions in a global Hour of Adoration as Churches all over the world will be synchronized with Rome, and will be for an hour in communion with the Pope in Eucharistic Adoration. The Worldwide Eucharistic Adoration will be broadcast from St. Peter s Basilica this Sunday, June 2 nd from 5:00PM -6:00PM in Rome which is 8:00AM-9:00AM local time. Its theme is: One Lord, One Faith, which was chosen to testify to the deep unity that characterizes this Year of Faith. According to Vatican Radio, dioceses worldwide will be synchronized with St. Peter s and will pray for the intentions proposed by the Pope. The first is: For the Church spread throughout the world and united today in the adoration of the Most Holy Eucharist as a sign of unity. That through her faithful announcement, the Word that saves may still resonate as the bearer of mercy and may increase love to give full meaning to pain and suffering, giving back joy and serenity. Pope Francis second intention is: For those around the world who still suffer slavery and who are victims of war, human trafficking, drug running, and slave labor. For the children and women who are suffering from every type of violence. Also, for all those who find themselves in economically precarious situations, above all for the unemployed, the elderly, migrants, the homeless, prisoners, and those who experience marginalization. That the Church s prayer and its active nearness give them comfort and assistance in hope and strength and courage in defending human dignity. (Vatican Radio/VIS) We, at Holy Name, are taking part in this one-hour Global Prayer and will unite ourselves with Rome in communion with the Pope right after our Sunday 7:30AM mass. Before I forget, let me say congratulations to our Kindergarten and 8 th Grade students who graduated this week. Graduation is not an end, but a beginning, that is why it is sometimes called a commencement ceremony. It is a start of another journey. Nevertheless, it is still an achievement, something to be proud of, and something to be thankful for. Kudos! It was graduation day and Mom was trying to take a picture of their son in a cap and gown, posed with his father. "I want a good picture, so try to make this look natural," she said. "Junior, put your arm around your dad's shoulder." The father answered, "If you want it to look natural, why not have him put his hand in my pocket?" Happy 27th Anniversary of Ordination Fr. Arnold!! The Second Va can Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospec ve By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Ques on: What was God s purpose for crea ng the new covenant as revealed in the New Testament? Answer from Dei Verbum: The word of God, which is the power of God for the salva on of all who believe (see Rom. 1:16), is set forth and shows its power in a most excellent way in the wri ngs of the New Testament. For when the fullness of me arrived (see Gal. 4:4), the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us in His fullness of graces and truth (see John 1:14). Christ established the kingdom of God on earth, manifested His Father and Himself by deeds and words, and completed His work by His death, resurrec on and glorious Ascension and by the sending of the Holy Spirit. Having been li ed up from the earth, He draws all men to Himself (see John 12:32, Greek text), He who alone has the words of eternal life (see John 6:68). This mystery had not been manifested to other genera ons as it was now revealed to His holy Apostles and prophets in the Holy Spirit (see Eph. 3:4-6, Greek text), so that they might preach the Gospel, s r up faith in Jesus, Christ and Lord, and gather together the Church. Now the wri ngs of the New Testament stand as a perpetual and divine witness to these reali es. Ques on: What special place do the Gospels hold within the New Testament? It is common knowledge that among all the Scriptures, even those of the New Testament, the Gospels have a special preeminence, and rightly so, for they are the principal witness for the life and teaching of the incarnate Word, our savior. The Church has always and everywhere held and con nues to hold that the four Gospels are of apostolic origin. For what the Apostles preached in fulfillment of the commission of Christ, a erwards they themselves and apostolic men, under the inspira on of the divine Spirit, handed on to us in wri ng: the founda on of faith, namely, the fourfold Gospel, according to Ma hew, Mark, Luke and John. Editor s Note: Last week we looked into Dei Verbum s sec on on the Old Testament. This week it s the New Testament. What s concealed in the old is now revealed in the new! We o en find ourselves drawn to dig deeper into our Catholic faith. You are encouraged to explore more at: h p:// can.va/archive/ At the Va can s website, you ll find a wealth of free and complete Catholic resources including the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Code of Canon law and the en rety of the Second Va can Council.

5 Reflecting on God s Word I came across a little book not too long ago that offered a selection of B and Bs ( Bed and Breakfast residences) where travelers could stay in a certain state. The promise of a good B and B is a clean place, a good night s sleep, and a good meal to begin the day. In short, rest and sustenance. Is it too irreverent to propose that today s feast is a reminder that we believers have available the B and B of all B and Bs in the Eucharist? This sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ offers an ongoing opportunity for rest and sustenance with the Lord. Today s scriptures all deal with offering sustenance, beginning with Melchizedek presenting Abraham a little bread and wine along with a blessing. Then there is Paul reminding the fractious Corinthians how eating the bread and wine sustains them as they proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. Finally, Jesus provides rest and sustenance for his disciples, along with five thousand others who show up. My late stepfather worked off a truck, checking gas meters and doing repairs for the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company. He used to stop in a church and have his lunch there. He said it provided him a chance to talk to the Lord and rest for a few moments in the Lord s presence. It sustained him over the years. Again, rest and sustenance. God s ongoing hospitality in the Eucharist has continued over generations to offer rest and sustenance. What could be better than having the Lord coming to dwell within us, giving us the nourishment necessary to sustain us on our journey? James A. Wallace, C.SS.R. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We owe today s beautiful feast to a valiant woman who suffered a great deal to establish a feast out of her love for the Eucharist. Juliana was a nun in Belgium in the thirteenth century. She served in a hospital for lepers. She became convinced through her prayer that the liturgical year was incomplete because it had no feast for the Eucharist. Her efforts were not welcome, and a supervising priest sought to punish her for promoting a feast that nobody wanted. He even had her accused of financial mismanagement and banished her from her convent. Shortly after she was exiled, the bishop approved the feast. It quickly spread through Europe. In those days, people very seldom received Holy Communion, and so the processions through the streets with the eucharistic bread not only led to an awareness of Christ s hunger to be with us, but prepared the way for a deeper desire to receive Christ s Body and Blood in more frequent Communion. The feast grew rapidly, but Juliana disappeared into poverty and a hidden life. She ended her days as an anchoress, a woman living in seclusion in a room attached to a parish church. Imagine her delight at seeing us gathered at the table of the Lord on this day, aware of Christ s presence in our midst, sharing fully in Christ s Body and Blood. Our celebration today invests her struggle and sorrows with dignity and meaning. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. THE EUCHARIST Just as the bread, which is made from the earth, when God is invoked is no longer common bread but the Eucharist, both earthly and heavenly, so our bodies, after we have received the Eucharist, are no longer corruptible, since they hold the hope of the resurrection. St. Irenaeus HOLY NAME SCHOOL Dear Holy Name Families, We held our annual Chinese Language Class Award Ceremony on Thursday, May 23. Many parents, grandparents, siblings and friends gathered in the gym to listen to the students read or sing in Cantonese or Mandarin. Some of the girls entertained us with beautiful, graceful dancing. Students work was displayed around the gym for people to admire. Everyone had an opportunity to visit with each other and enjoy some tasty snacks. Thank you Sister Esther Ling for continuing to offer our students a wonderful Chinese language program. Your teachers work so hard to prepare their lessons so that their students benefit from each day of class. I would like to thank all of our language teachers for a job well done. God bless you. Mrs. Jean Thompson (Austin 7B & Garrett 5 th gd) and Mrs. Bridget Michaels (Justin 7B & Shawn 3rd gd) have been working with twenty-one 7 th grade girls to prepare them for cheerleading tryouts. The big day was last Wednesday, May 23. Some teachers, staff members and parents agreed to judge the tryouts. The girls were so well prepared and demonstrated ability, confidence and cheerfulness. It was decided to keep all of the girls as cheerleaders and have two teams. Thank you so much, Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Michaels, for working with our girls and congratulations to each and every one of you. Please see a list of our Holy Name Cheerleaders in this bulletin. Thank you to all of our 8 th grade and Kindergarten parents who are working so hard this week to make sure your children enjoy this last week of school. God bless each of our eighth grade students as they graduate from Holy Name School and enter high school. God bless our youngest students as they graduate and go to the first grade at Holy Name School. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos HELPING TORNADO VICTIMS IN OKLAHOMA An Un-Free Dress Day was held last Friday for the Oklahoma community ravaged by the tornado.
