4 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Back to reality has been an expression to mean coming back from a vacation or from being away from home. That means you have to face your usual routine or work again. But if reality means work, then I would say I just came back from reality to reality. The reality is that my so called vacation is only a vacation away from the parish and not from work. I had an event to attend to upon my arrival in the Philippines but I missed it because my original flight was cancelled. Coming back here, I thought of writing this article from the airport but my flight was delayed and I arrived at the rectory close to midnight. There has been a standing joke on Philippine Airlines acronym s PAL. It means Plane Always Late. Lately, they added PAL, Inc. That means Plane always late, if not cancelled. We welcome the Philippine Madrigal Singers this weekend as they perform an evening of choral concert in our church. Their original flight was also cancelled by the same airline. I hope someday, PAL, Inc. will mean Punctual At Last. As the plane was about to take off, two passengers seated beside me made a Sign of the Cross. One paused in silence and made the Sign of the Cross again. I felt humbled by their religiosity. I, a priest, did nothing. The two unknown passengers reminded me to always pray and never be ashamed to express your faith. Disregarding the effects of jetlag, I met with families who recently lost their loved ones. Despite their loss, they have not wavered in their faith. I admire these parishioners and people like them always teach and encourage me to have a strong faith in God. Let s pray for our departed parishioners Billy Kreps, Karen Fitzgerald and Rose Dietzen who recently passed away and their families who loved them and have always felt the love of God and have kept their faith. Pope Francis once said that parents are the children s source of life. They are there to protect their sons and daughters and not to compete with them. That s why the family must be a place of life, not of death; territory of cure and not of illness; stage of forgiveness and not guilt. A man is in a bar and falling off his stool every couple of minutes. He is obviously drunk. So the bartender says to another man in the bar: "Why don't you be a good Samaritan and take him home." The man takes the drunk out the door and to his car and he stumbles at least ten times. They drive along and the drunk points out his house to the man. He stops the car and the drunk stumbles up the steps to his house with the man. The drunk's wife greets them at the door: "I thank you for bringing him home for me, but where's his wheel chair?" There is a coming home in heaven for our parishioners who recently passed away. I am finally back home in the parish and the Philippine Madrigal Singers are here despite the setbacks of our flights. But the show must go on and our work continues. Back to Reality! Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) will begin on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at 7:00-8:30PM in the Pastoral Center. The RCIA process is for people who want either to learn about Catholics or to become a Catholic. If you are in an interfaith marriage, you may want to understand your family s Catholic faith better. If you are not connected to any faith community, you are most welcome to inquire with us. We invite you or someone you know who will be interested to explore this opportunity by coming to our RCIA sessions. Our parish s RCIA Team is composed of Sr. Cristina, Terry Flaherty, Lucy Jacinto, and different invited presenters who will share with the Inquirers their expertise about topics in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Volunteers Needed Our parish ministry of visiting the sick and homebound parishioners is in need of volunteers for weekly Communion Service and social visits. Altar Linens Ministry: The Cleaning of Altar Linens involves washing and ironing the purificators that are used for wiping the sacred cup during communion, the corporals and the towels that are used on the altar by the Priests for washing their hands. The linens are taken home once a week and then returned to the sacristy before Mass the following week. Become a Member of the Altar Linen Team If you're interested in volunteering for this "behind the scenes" ministry of cleaning the Altar Linens, please contact Sr. Cristina after Summer break. 5 August 13, 2017 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Keep Rowing! I vividly remember as a young boy swimming on a coastal beach and being dumped in the surf. I was tossed around topsy turvy and was very aware of the power of the waves. I survived, but since then have always been afraid of turbulent water. This Gospel resonates with that experience, and it resonates with lots of experiences in our lives. Have you ever felt swamped with an event a traumatic accident, the death of someone we love, the loss of a job, failure in an exam which seems to leave us floundering? A sudden tempest storms into our life and we can t find our feet, can be quite literally gasping for air, we can feel we are drowning. That is when we can cry out in our individual distress Lord, save me and Our Lord will come alongside us and get into the boat of life with us and calm the storm. But, and this is very important, our Lord will not take us back as if by magic to the previous situation. The storm might be behind us, but we have to press on. The disciples had started off from the Jewish side of the Sea of Galilee, familiar territory. Jesus guided them through the stormy situation to the other side, the pagan side, unfamiliar territory where they would not have felt at home. It takes courage for us to move to a new situation, but with Our Lord s presence we need not be as afraid as we would otherwise be. But this Gospel is not so much about individuals as it is about the Church. It is about the disciples of Jesus around the figure of Peter. We are the disciples of Jesus gathered in the boat with the successor of St Peter, Pope Francis. When the Church is buffeted by storms, it is often because the Church is in the midst of a journey from familiar to unfamiliar territory. We can all list some of the storms of the past fifty years. There is a new attitude to authority. Rule by dictate or decree with unreflecting obedience is not possible except in a few remaining authoritarian or totalitarian regimes. Rome-based clerics and bishops have to get used to this new situation, and Our Lord says to them keep rowing to the unfamiliar shore. There is a new attitude to gender roles. The feminist movement has challenged many of the stereotypes by which women had been subjugated over the centuries. Males have got to get used to this new situation and Our Lord says to us keep rowing to the unfamiliar shore. Pope Francis is rowing in the right direction on that score. As he has said: The challenge today is this, to think about the specific place of women also in those places where the authority of the Church is exercised for various areas of the Church. [A Big Heart Open to God, America: National Catholic Review 30 Sept 2013] There is a new attitude to priests and bishops. There is anger and suspicion at sexual abuse and its cover up, transparency and responsibility are demanded. Clergy have got to get used to this new situation. Our Lord says keep rowing to an unfamiliar shore. Of course, throwing tradition overboard willy nilly is not a solution either. There is Tradition with a capital T which is the Spiritled experience of Catholic Christianity over two millennia. That is not to be jettisoned. But the grace of discernment is needed. In particular, Our Lord will not allow us the indulgence of nostalgic yearning for the safety of the past country inhabited by the Church. Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time Reflection continued... We must make our way to the other shore. Perhaps we are called to help build a new structure of the Church on that other shore. We know the preferred model put forward by the current successor of St Peter: I see the Church as a field hospital after battle.... Heal the wounds, heal the wounds.... And you have to start from the ground up. We can row with courage because we know we are in the same boat as Peter to whom our Risen Lord constantly extends a saving hand. Do not be afraid.
