3 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 18: 9-14 He who humbles himself... It was nine in the morning and the Pharisee Aram hurried up the steps of the Great Temple. Even though he was a large man, heaped in great robes, he looked small as he passed between the towering pillars of Boaz and Jachin and entered the sanctuary. Aram sighed, drinking in the peaceful serenity of this holy place. It was good to be there close to God. To get even closer he climbed the additional steps that led to the entrance to the room of the holy of holies. There, looking down on those on the sanctuary level he began to pray his first prayers of the day. He would be back at noon and again at three and today would be even more special because it was the day before the Sabbath and he would fast from everything, including water. Aram reflected on his goodness. Looking out at those praying in the sanctuary, he even felt a little sorry for them because they were all so filthy with sin. As Aram looked down he recognized Rabanius, a tax collector, huddled down on the floor in prayer. Aram snorted his contempt at the audacity of Rabanius to even come into the temple sanctuary. Pleased with the perfection of his faithful worship, Aram bowed his head and fervently gave God his thanks: I thank you God that I am not like the rest of men grasping, crooked, adulterous or even like this tax collector... From the cold stone of the sanctuary floor the tax collector Rabanius glanced up toward the room of the Holy of Holies. Standing near the entrance was a great Pharisee, head bowed in prayer. At such a sight of deep faith Rabanius realized how unworthy he was. He pressed his face down onto the floor and softly beat his chest in remorse. He whispered his prayer slowly and softly: O God, be merciful to me a sinner. The sound of wings echoed high above as a dove flew from the topmost ledge of the temple walls, five stories above the sanctuary floor. It spiraled down sweeping close to Rabanius and then flapped through the entrance and disappeared in the bright morning light. How easy it is for us to become like the pious Pharisee. Our highly competitive culture teaches us to strive for excellence. Our human scorecard recognizes only victories and achievements. Small wonder that we end up trying to get an A in our religion and faith class. Today s Gospel offers us a paradox Jesus words: For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, while he who humbles himself shall be exalted. 4 FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora It s our school Fright Fest this weekend (Saturday). Don t be frightened though; there will be more fun and enjoyment in this fundraising event for our school. What are frightening are the aftershocks that my town mates are still experiencing in my home province of Bohol, Philippines, after that devastating 7.2 intensity earthquake last week. The last time I heard there were already 1,300 aftershocks and more are still coming. So we have got to keep praying. A bishop, a priest and a deacon, were about to be executed for preaching the Gospel in a foreign land. They bring out the bishop first and the guard shouts, Ready aim and suddenly the bishop yells, EARTHQUAKE. When everyone looks around the bishop runs off. Next they bring out the priest. The guard shouts, Ready aim... and suddenly the priest yells, TORNADO. When everyone ducks, the priest runs off. By then, of course, the deacon had it figured out. They bring him out and when the guard shouts, Ready.Aim. Suddenly the deacon yells, FIRE. After the earthquake, somebody commented that it was an inevitable Act of God. But I beg to disagree. God is all good. He can never be the author of something bad or evil. And God is never wrong. A King, who did not believe in the goodness of God, had a slave who, in every and all circumstances, said: "My King, do not be discouraged, because everything God does is perfect, no mistakes!" One day the king and his slave went hunting, and along the way a wild animal attacked the king. His slave managed to kill the animal, but could not prevent his majesty from losing a finger. Furious and without showing his gratitude for being saved, the nobleman said "Is God good? If He was good, I would not have been attacked and lost my finger." The slave replied: "My king, despite all these things, I can only tell you that God is good, and he knows "why" of all these things. What God does is perfect. He is never wrong!" Outraged by the response, the king ordered the arrest of his slave. Later, he left for another hunt and was captured by an army of men who made human sacrifices. On the altar, ready to sacrifice the nobleman, the savages found that the victim was missing one of his fingers, so he was released. According to them he was not complete so he could not be offered to the gods. Upon his return to the palace, he authorized the release of his slave. Then, he received him very affectionately. "My dear servant, God was really good to me! I was almost killed by the wild men, but for lack of a single finger, I was let go! But I have a question: if God is so good, why did he allow me to put you in jail?" "My King, if I had gone with you on this hunt, I would have been sacrificed for you, because I have no missing finger; therefore remember, everything God does is perfect. He is never wrong." Often we complain about life, and negative things that happen to us, forgetting that nothing is random and that everything has a purpose. Every morning, offer your day to God, don't be in a rush. Ask God to inspire your thoughts, guide your actions, and ease your feelings The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Question: What were the aims given by the Second Vatican Council that guided any liturgical revisions to the Mass?Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: For this reason the sacred Council, having in mind those Masses which are celebrated with the assistance of the faithful, especially on Sundays and feasts of obligation, has made the following decrees in order that the sacrifice of the Mass, even in the ritual forms of its celebration, may become pastorally efficacious to the fullest degree. The rite of the Mass is to be revised in such a way that the intrinsic nature and purpose of its several parts, as also the connection between them, may be more clearly manifested, and that devout and active participation by the faithful may be more easily achieved. For this purpose the rites are to be simplified, due care being taken to preserve their substance; elements which, with the passage of time, came to be duplicated, or were added with but little advantage, are now to be discarded; other elements which have suffered injury through accidents of history are now to be restored to the vigor which they had in the days of the holy Fathers, as may seem useful or necessary. Question: What specific direction did the Second Vatican Council give with regards to the Liturgy of the Word portion of the Mass? Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: The treasures of the bible are to be opened up more lavishly, so that richer fare may be provided for the faithful at the table of God's word. In this way a more representative portion of the holy scriptures will be read to the people in the course of a prescribed number of years. By means of the homily the mysteries of the faith and the guiding principles of the Christian life are expounded from the sacred text, during the course of the liturgical year; the homily, therefore, is to be highly esteemed as part of the liturgy itself; in fact, at those Masses which are celebrated with the assistance of the people on Sundays and feasts of obligation, it should not be omitted except for a serious reason. Editor s Note: Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy) has as its central aim a focus on greater participation of the laity in the liturgy. We are now reviewing the constitution s second chapter, The Most Sacred Mystery of the Eucharist. Future chapters in Sacrosanctum Concilium will look at "The Other Sacraments and Sacramentals," "The Divine Office," "The Liturgical Year," "Sacred Music," and "Sacred Art." NEW SCHEDULE FOR THE VIETNAMESE MASS Starting today, October 27, 2013, the Vietnamese Mass is every Sunday at 5:00 pm, instead of 3:15 pm

5 Is God calling you to consider Consecrated Life as a Dominican sister? Come and join our Discernment Retreat [Single Catholic women (18-40)] Friday Sunday November 15-17, 2013 Friday 6 PM- Sunday 2:00 PM Mission Blvd. Fremont, California [Entrance on Mission Tierra Place] RSVP by Monday, November 11, 2013 vocations@msjdominicans.org or call for more information and directions TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Friday s Solemnity of All Saints and Saturday s Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed fit well at the beginning of November. The liturgical readings of this final month in the Church year are keyed to the end of time and the fulfillment of Jesus saving acts. Nowhere is this more fully celebrated than in Mexico, where November 2 is the Day of the Dead. Missionaries moved an ancient Aztec festival from midsummer to November, linking the festival to Christian themes. Today, it is a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity of life, principally by festive picnics in cemeteries. There are special foods and games, and people socialize with other families and tell favorite stories about their dear ones. The sweetness of life is honored by sugary desserts and treats. Flowers, music, lights, and feasting assure that the day is not at all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a procession to the cemetery, and a morning feast. Most families have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or bread of the dead. A toy skeleton is baked into the loaf, and the one who bites into it is considered lucky indeed. The dead are not feared, but deeply loved, and this joyful family feast points both to age-old customs and Resurrection faith. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
