3 FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora We say goodbye to the month of September and say welcome and hello to the new month of October, with special events to look forward to. October is the month of the Rosary and we will be praying the Rosary in our Pastoral Center Chapel every day at 6:30 PM. Join our Rosary group, led by parishioner s Carmen and Domingo Palarca. Mark your calendar for these special celebrations and feasts of the Church. Oct. 1- Saint Therese of the Child Jesus; Oct. 2 Feast of the Guardian Angels; October 4 Feast of Saint Francis, the patron of our city. (We will be having the annual Blessing of the Animals at 1:45 PM in the school yard.) Oct. 6 - Saint Bruno, priest, patron of St. Bruno s church and the city of San Bruno); Oct. 7 normally is the Feast of Our Lady of Rosary, but being a Sunday we will celebrate the 27 th Sunday in Ordinary Time; Oct. 9 St. Denis, bishop, patron of St. Denis Church in Menlo Park; Oct. 15 St. Theresa of Avila, a Carmelite sister and considered as Doctor of the Church. Oct. 16 -St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation sister who instituted the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus; Oct 18 St. Luke, the evangelist; Oct. 19 St. John de Brebeuf and Isaac Joques, members of the Society of Jesus or Jesuit order; Oct. 20 St. Paul of the Cross, a priest who founded the Passionist order; Oct. 23 St. John Capistrano - priest, patron of military chaplains; October 24- St. Anthony Mary Claret - bishop, founder of the Claretian order. Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II who were canonized at the same time are memorialized this month; October 11 th for St. Pope John XXIII and October 22 nd for St. Pope John Paul II. That s a lot to celebrate and help us develop in our faith and love for God. A lot of exciting things are happening in our parish, too. There s the Nightingales Concert and the October Fright Fest and many more. Starting this Tuesday, October 2 nd, and continuing until November 5 th, we will have another free NERT (Neighborhood Emergency Response Team) Training program from 6-9PM at the Flanagan Center. This is our second year to host this training for our neighborhood, provided by our beloved San Francisco Fire Department. A special thanks to Dick Morton, Lead Volunteer and Emergency Action planner/ advisor and Ramsey Ramos, our Parish Emergency Action Plan Coordinator and the rest of members of Holy Name of Jesus Emergency Action plan team. Finally, the diagonal parking lines in front of the church have been repainted. After a few phone calls and s to the City, I approached three candidates running for Supervisor in our district to follow up on this project. I guess, the intervention worked. There are 8 candidates for District 4 and you will be able to meet them in person and hear their political platforms on Thursday, October 4 th in our Flanagan Center. Come and join us so you will be enlightened about who is the best person to vote for this coming November 6 election. Be sure to cast your votes. Some people cross the ocean to fight for democracy but do not cross the street to vote. Those who walk with GOD will always reach their destination... Those who dream with GOD will always achieve their vision... Those who stand for GOD will always win the battle... and Those who serve GOD will always receive their reward! 4 FAITH FORMATION CATECHESIS PASTORAL OUTREACH Director: Sr. Cristina Ovejera, FdCC (415) REFLECTION: Hope As An Obstacle Hope is important, because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today. But that is the most that hope can do for us to make some hardship lighter. When I think deeply about the nature of hope, I see something tragic. Since we cling to our hope in the future, we do not focus our energies and capabilities on the present moment. We use hope to believe something better will happen in the future, that we will arrive at peace, or the Kingdom of God. Hope becomes a kind of obstacle. If you can refrain from hoping, you can bring yourself entirely into the present moment and discover the joy that is already here. -Thich Nhat Hanh, Peace Is Every Step, 1991 Thank You to the Lay Canossians for hosting the Coffee and Donuts on Sept. 16 th, giving an example of what Fr. Arnold requested every ministry to do. We appreciate the effort in preparing the information posters that were attractive and interesting. The photos of Lay Canossians activities, membership, events and the Canossian Sisters in Holy Name through the years. Parishioners got good information from brochures, bookmarks, prayer cards, and a mini-library of Canossian readings. Your presence at all the tables enabled the parishioners to inquire about the Association. Fr. Arnold, Sr. Cristina and Susan Logan hope that Coffee & Donuts Sundays will be this lively and a venue where new volunteers will come forward. Fr. Jeff and Fr. Ron were also impressed. We made them believe that this is a weekly happening. We intend to make it so! We are looking forward to similar experiences of hospitality and community building! HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH YOUTH MINISTRY MISSION STATEMENT We are EMPOWERED to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our community of faith. Sacrament of Confirmation of Adults If you have received the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion in the Catholic Church, but have not been confirmed. Our parish offers a class for adults, 18 years and over, to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation. Please contact Sr. Cristina in the parish office. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) We invite you or people you know to explore the Catholic faith and practices in an hour-long weekly session with Sr. Cristina and RCIA catechists. Lectio Divina Read: Look at the differences in reaction of Joshua and Moses towards those who were prophesying outside their group. See the same difference in reaction of John and Jesus towards the one ministering outside their group. It is the kind of attitude displayed by Joshua and John that perpetuates poverty, hatred, and misery in today s world as well. Reflect: If religion has a bad name today and people walk away in disgust, it is because we have used religion to build walls and fences based on presumed differences, and not bridges and roads linking people up. This will be both a prayerful gathering as well as community building. We will pray for the special intentions of Pope Francis and for the Catholic Church in this time of crisis, through the intercession of St. Francis of Assisi. He was instructed by our Lord Himself, to rebuild my Church. There will be sacrament of Reconciliation and Mass, a visit to the Portiuncula. Lunch will be at an Italian restaurant near the church.
