4 FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora I had a great privilege to celebrate a Mass at the Carmelite Monastery chapel in San Francisco last Tuesday participated by the cloistered nuns and few of our parishioners, Lorraine Macias, Margaret Costello, Brenda Petropoulos and our parish secretary, Colleen Durkin. The nuns behind bars sung beautifully as beautiful as the exquisite chapel of the Monastery of Cristo Rey. The chapel is open to the public for daily prayer and is located at 721 Parker Avenue (the corner of Parker and Fulton) in San Francisco. Right after the Mass, on our way to meet the nuns, my Pastor s instinct came in as I asked the question, how do they maintain the upkeep of the building? Translating the question in a more practical parlance - where do the nuns get the money to survive and take care of their property? Lorraine, who was instrumental in getting me to say Mass at the monastery, quickly responded without any hesitation: it s Divine Providence. Indeed, God truly provides. I have to believe in that as we face our ongoing Pastoral Center Fire Escape project that will cost us more or less $50,000. Most of the time, God uses human providence as an instrument to manifest his divine providence. Father O'Malley answers the phone. "Hello, is this Father O'Malley?" "It is" "This is the IRS. Can you help us?" "I can" "Do you know a Ted Houlihan?" "I do" "Is he a member of your congregation?" "He is" "Did he donate $10,000 to the church?" "He will". This reminds me of another priest who announced to his congregation: I have good news and bad news for you today. The good news is that we have enough money for our building project; the bad news is that they are still in your pockets. Yes, divine providence is with us too and we have a special prayer brigade praying for us The Carmelite Sisters at the Monastery of Cristo Rey. They know how and what to pray for us because they read our Sunday Bulletin. And of course, they enjoy my jokes too. Living Stewardship Now The saints and other heroes of faith are meant to inspire and encourage us on the path of discipleship. Let your discipleship bear fruit as the stewardship of your time, abilities, and resources, given freely and regularly. Copyright 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity, and he told his followers: Give them some food yourselves. - Mark 6:37 ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN FRANCISCO ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL 2012 The Archbishop s Annual Appeal is the method chosen by the pastors to fund the operation of the Archdiocese. Eleven pastors (the Archbishop s Stewardship Council) oversee the process and recommend individual parish assessments. This funding supports ministries provided by the parishes, provides direct ministry when the scope of that ministry is too large or complex for any single parish to accomplish, maintains centralized services and support for all the parishes and schools, provides continuing education and other services to priests and deacons, maintain communication with the California Conference of Bishops, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Vatican, and provide financial support to these entities to demonstrate once again that Catholic means universal and that our Church is bigger than any parish or diocese. The Archbishop s Annual Appeal helps individuals, the parish and the Archdiocese realize their respective opportunities as Christian stewards. To date, we have received $34,666 (62.12%) in pledges towards our goal of $55,400. Thank you for your generosity and continued support. PLEASE HELP US REACH OUR GOAL! 5 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The roots of this week s feast of the Assumption can be traced back at least to the fifth century, when it is noted in the Armenian lectionary. Celebrated in Jerusalem, the feast in honor of the Theotokos, the Mother of God, became the principal feast of Mary throughout the Christian world. The place of celebration was at the tomb of Mary in Gethsemane and was therefore known as the Dormition of Mary. In some cultures this feast is celebrated today with a resting statue of Mary, much like a wake service of modern times. The liturgy of this feast provides images of the place of your rest in Psalm 132, and reverence for the Ark of the Covenant that held the signs of the Promise. Like that Ark, Mary is for us the ark of the Savior, the one who bore the Son of God. When the doctrine of the Assumption was defined in 1950 the Gospel reading for the feast was changed to include the verses of Mary s song, the Magnificat. The scripture readings for both the vigil Mass and the Mass of the day speak to us of life after death as well as the path to be followed in order to reach it. The key to this promised immortality is found as we take to heart the words of the vigil s Gospel, Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Time for a new evangelization Today the proclamation of the Gospel, ever the same, is coming up against certain new social situations that call the Church into question and demand adequate responses if they are to account for the hope that is in her (cf. I Peter 3:15). These are the new challenges to evangelization in today s world, described in chapter two by various sectors. The Church is called to use discernment so that they can be turned into places for proclaiming the Gospel and experiencing the Church. They were already mentioned in the Lineamenta but the answers of the episcopates have contributed to their further elaboration. There are five sectors cultural (marked by secularization), migratory, economic, political, of scientific research and technological next to which, because of their effect in the life of the particular churches the communications and religious sectors have been developed in addition. Many of the responses highlighted the importance of the means of communications for the dissemination of the Good News, and in particular of the media and digital cultures. With regard to the religious sector, ecumenical and interreligious dialogue are becoming distinctly deeper, emphasizing the important progress in relations between the Catholic Church and other Churches and ecclesial communities but not disregarding the obstacles even in recent ones, in the journey marked by Jesus in his prayer that they may all be one (John 16:21), the timeliness of the dialogue with Islam and with the other great religions of the world is noted in particular: the positive aspects are pointed out and the difficulties, especially in those countries where Christians are a minority, are not forgotten. LOOKING BACK, ACTING FORWARD On an island in the Tiber River in Rome stands the small Basilica of Saint Bartholomew. In the year 2000, Pope John Paul II dedicated it as a shrine to all Christian victims of twentieth-century wars and persecution throughout the world. The side chapels in the basilica contain mementos of men and women who died for their Christian faith and their love of others. Some of them you will have heard of, some you will not. Many are Catholic, but Protestants and Orthodox Christians are also represented. In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI visited the basilica and spoke of the great love shown by those whose names we know, as well as that of countless more souls known only to God who have given their lives or suffered torture or detention rather than betray their faith in Christ. The basilica is in the care of the Community of Sant Egidio, which was founded in Rome by high school students in 1968 and now claims fifty thousand members in over seventy countries. Pope Benedict s visit celebrated the fortieth anniversary of the founding of the Community. Members are lay people who have decided to commit themselves to living the Gospel as fully as possible. They bond through Bible reading and daily prayer, and their stewardship is expressed in direct assistance to the poor, the elderly, and the homeless, and in medical care for people living with AIDS. They are also committed to an ongoing dialog with other Christian denominations and other faith traditions, and to peacemaking activities. Like the members of the Sant Egidio Community, we should observe and value the images of the saints in our church. They serve as a constant reminder of the value of a gospelcentered life, and challenge us to risk whatever it takes to follow Christ in our daily life. Copyright 2011, World Library Publications. In rhetorical speech, which includes preaching and teaching, three elements are important: the mythos, or the message; the logos, or the words used; and the ethos, or the qualifications of the speaker. The message may be clear, the words may be elegant and persuasive, but if the speaker is not seen as someone who is qualified to speak on the subject, the speech will not be convincing. In today s Gospel, the people are questioning Jesus credentials. Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? (John 6:42). He s a local boy, where did he get this knowledge? Jesus answers them with his teaching about God as true father. If you know who your teacher is, you know what your message should be. Jesus important words about the Eucharist are grounded in his self knowledge as the one who is from God (John 6:46). Those who are from God know God and listen to the word of God. They will recognize Jesus as speaking, doing and being that word. The ethos of the hearer is on the line as well.
