Originally intended as a temporary installation, the Eiffel Tower has become one of the most enduring symbols of France and the industrial age. In 1889, Paris hosted an Exposition Universelle (World s Fair) to mark the 100-year anniversary of the French Revolution. More than 100 artists submitted competing plans for a monument to be built on the Champ-de-Mars, located in central Paris, and serve as the exposition s entrance. The commission was granted to Eiffel et Compagnie, a consulting and construction firm owned by the acclaimed bridge builder, architect and metals expert Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel. While Eiffel himself often receives full credit for the monument that bears his name, it was one of his employees a structural engineer named Maurice Koechlin who came up with and fine-tuned the concept. Many regarded the massive iron structure with skepticism. Today, the Eiffel Tower, which continues to serve an important role in television and radio broadcasts, is considered an architectural wonder and attracts more visitors than any other paid tourist attraction in the world. 3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Hail to the King of Kings! We celebrate the feast of Christ the King this Sunday. It is the climax and conclusion of the church liturgical journey through the life of Christ and the Gospel message and provides a bridge to another new Liturgical Year of the Church. We end Year B this Sunday and begin Year C next Sunday, which is the first Sunday of Advent. We hope that when we end our life s journey here on earth, Christ will reign in us so we can truly begin a new life in Him, the gift of everlasting life. That gift of eternal life is what our longtime parishioner Rene Rodigou is now enjoying. A good 200 or so people attended his memorial mass last Tuesday evening. At 93 years old Rene was still serving Holy Name Church as one of our ushers/collectors until he was too weak to attend church. Rene was the on call plumber at HN for many, many years, and his lovely wife, Marguerite, was our Parish Secretary. He died at the age of 94. As a member of the Knights of Holy Name, he was also baby sitting (watching) the church on his scheduled days, even to the very last years of his life. Rene was also a member of the HN St. Vincent de Paul Society and a dedicated volunteer at St. Anthony s Dining Room for twenty years. Thank you Rene! Christ reigns in you, enjoy the gift of eternal life in heaven! To be a Knight of Holy Name is to serve to the very last end. No backing out! That s what I have discovered and admired so much about them. The Knights of Holy Name also had their annual Memorial Mass last Wednesday in honor of their deceased members, followed by breakfast at the Pastoral Center s Dining Room - named after our former pastor and my predecessor, Fr. Don D Angelo, who was in attendance at both the mass and breakfast. This Saturday is a special day for Knight of Holy Name Gerard (Gerry) Cassidy and his wife Sally as they celebrate the baptisms of their twin granddaughters. Baptism is also a kind of bridge to the reign of Christ. A child is officially called a Christian, a follower of Christ, through the Sacrament of Baptism. Congratulations! Indeed, there are so many reasons for us to be thankful. May we be filled with so much gratefulness when this Thanksgiving Day arrives on Thursday. We say thank you also to the Fil-Am Club Ministry for sponsoring our yearly Christ the King fellowship after the 11:30AM mass this Sunday. After attending the early mass on Christ the King Sunday, a member of the Knights of Holy Name and his wife went to breakfast to a new restaurant where the seniors special was two eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast for $5.99. Sounds good, said the wife. But I don t want the eggs. Then, I ll have to charge you $7.99 because you are ordering a la carte, the waitress warned her. You mean I d have to pay for not taking the eggs? the wife asked incredulously. Yep, said the waitress. I ll take the special then, the wife said. OK, how do you want your eggs? the waitress asked. Raw and still in the shell, the wife replied. She took the two eggs home and baked a cake!!! TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION THE CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT The collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) provides funding for groups that make lasting change and uplift the poor in the United States. He connected the increasingly denial of Christ as king to the rise of secularism. At the time of Quas Primas, many Christians (including Catholics) began to doubt Christ's authority and existence, as well as the Church's power to continue Christ's authority. Pius XI, and the rest of the Christian world, witnessed the rise of non-christian dictatorships in Europe, and saw Catholics being taken in by these earthly leaders. These dictators often attempted to assert authority over the Church. Just as the Feast of Corpus Christi was instituted when devotion to the Eucharist was at a low point, the Feast of Christ the King was instituted during a time when respect for Christ and the Church was waning, when the feast was needed most. ST. CLEMENT I (c.99) November 23 Pope, Martyr, Patron of Marble Workers St. Clement I succeeded Cletus as the fourth pope. It is believed that he was a freed man in the imperial household in Rome whom St. Peter baptized. He was elected to the papacy around the year 91. According to a tradition, Pope Clement I was banished to the Crimea by Emperor Trajan for converting over four hundred people, including the patrician Theodora and her husband. There while forced to labor in the quarries, he miraculously found a spring for the other prisoners and he preached to them so convincingly that it was said that 75 churches were needed; he was then sentenced to death. He was thrown into the sea with an anchor tied about his neck. There is a famous letter to the Corinthians written by St. Clement that shows the early authority of Rome over other apostolic churches. There was a schism in the church at Corinth, and St. Clement s letter served to reestablish peace among the Corinthians. In the letter he emphasizes that in our body, the head without the feet is nothing, neither the feet without the head. St. Clement is the first apostolic Father, and is mentioned in the Roman Canon of the Mass. Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds. Theodore Roosevelt

5 HOLY NAME SCHOOL NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 17, 2015 PRINCIPAL'S LETTER Dear Holy Name Families, Before anything I would like to welcome back Mrs. McCullagh. We are very excited to have her return from her maternity leave and are so happy for her family as they have welcomed Baby#2. Last week I was lucky to be able to be a part of our Fright Fest Thank You Dinner as well as the Preschool Mom's Night, and I couldn't help but think how lucky our school is to have such a strong parent community. Thank you all for that you continuously give to our school. We hope that your children are enjoying their classes. As always if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. Enjoy your week! Thanks, Natalie Cirigliano, Principal Preschool-Last week the Red Fish students created their own "thankful tree" with a rectangle trunk and added leaves that listed some of the things they are thankful for. The RF students planted popcorn kernels for their Thanksgiving "growing corn" activity. Some of their hypotheses on what will grow include: popcorn, flowers, a pumpkin and corn. The Blue Fish students continued working hard on their cutting skills. The BF students are learning and practicing patterns and sequencing in class, while writing daily in their journals. Their classmate Allison taught the class how to make "mochi" and brought some to share for snack. Kindergarten- During Language Arts time, Kindergarten sorted through books based on realism and fantasy. Students then discussed what strategies they used to figure out if a book was realistic or fantasy. Lastly, they created their own realistic drawings and fantasy drawings. Kindergarten had their first spelling test based on letter sounds we have covered in class so far. They also wrote sentences on what they are thankful for and why. During Math time, Kindergarten worked on numbers17-20 by counting objects, sorting objects in groups, and writing the numerals. In science class students wrapped up their leaf unit by creating their own leaf books. In social studies, students had a Veteran's Day parade in which they marched around school playing instruments and singing Yankee Doodle while waving American flags that the students created. In art class the students painted pictures of Indian corn using water colors. 1st Grade- Last week the first graders read a story about communities and the different jobs people have in our own communities. They also read an article from Scholastic News about veterans and why we celebrate Veterans Day. We were very lucky to have Cole's dad, Dr. Jabara, who is a doctor in the U.S. Army come into class and answer our many questions about being a part of the military. The first graders were very appreciative to have this experience! Lastly, the students shared their thoughtson God's creations and how to respect and take care of all he has created. 2nd Grade- Last week the second graders finished chapter 5 in Religion and chapter3 in Math, and they took the tests for these chapters. In Reading class they read a story about a mischievous spider who enjoyed playing tricks on his friends. The children also worked on singular and plural possessives. The second graders wrote stories about dreamcatchers and are making dreamcatchers using yarn and paper plates. On Friday in art the children made colorful snakes on desert backgrounds, and in class they wrote snake facts. In computer class the students used Google Maps to learn geography as part of Social Studies. They then found different cities in California and looked at the locations in relation to San Francisco. 3rd Grade- 3rd graders were busy concentrating on possessive nouns in grammar in both singular and plural forms. For handwriting, the students learned the lower-case cursive letters b and h. In science, students were paired up during the life cycle lesson where they had to do research and create a poster. For math, students continued with understanding division and learned another strategy for solving division problems by using repeated subtraction. In religion, students read St. Paul's letter to the Christians in Ephesus (Ephesians 4:25-32). 4th Grade- 4th grade students have begun creating Christmas themed art pieces with Mrs. K, starting with a beautiful, large Christmas ornament using transparencies and permanent markers. In reading class, students learned about the legend of John Henry and acted out key scenes from his life in mini skits. In religion class, students reflected upon the first of the Ten Commandments and created mini posters 5th Grade- 5th grade students began their non-fiction story powerpoint project in computer class last week. Students will include at least two pictures in their 8 slide project drawing inspiration from a prior reading story. Students learned how to play Square of Terror in P.E. class and had a great time. Students worked with fractions and decimals to solve word problems. Finally, students threw Mr. Rider a surprise farewell and thank you party on Friday afternoon. 6th Grade- In English, students took a test on their sentences unit, read the story "All Summer in a Day" and began an introduction to literature responses. In literature the students began a short unit on poetry by reading the poem "Another Mountain". They responded to it with illustrations of how they envisioned the "mountain" in the poem. Religion and history are aligned as we started to discuss God's call of Abraham, bringing the patriarch from Mesopotamia to the Promised Land. In art class students started creating reindeers by tracing their feet for the reindeer heads and their hands for the antlers. 7th Grade- In history class students began to learn about Central and Southern Africa. Working in pairs the students broke down content and interpreted maps. In religion class the students reflected on the Parable found in Matthew's Gospel and the students discussed what motivates people to help others in need. In English, students focused on mechanics and punctuation, learning correct comma, quotation, semicolon, and colon usage. In literature students continued reading Where the Red Fern Grows and compared the price of different objects then (1930's) and now. Students also studied the figurative language concepts of similes, metaphors, and personification. 8th Grade- In history class the 8th graders continued to study the Revolutionary War and looked at the various reasons for America's victory. Students also explored how France was our first ally and how we stand today with France while they are suffering tragic losses. In English, students were introduced to the progressive form of verbs, and spent the rest of the week mastering the concept of transitive/ intransitive verbs as well as direct and indirect objects. In literature students continued reading The Giver focusing on critical thinking questions like "why would there be no color in the community"? Students also discussed the merits of small vs. large families, and why the community would have rules about sizes of families. During religion class, the students identified and compared the different symbols of the Holy Spirit. The class was asked to relate to one of the symbols, and the overwhelming majority was the dove. TECHNOLOGY UPDATE Next year we will bringing a 1:1 ipad program to our junior high. We are finalizing the specifics of this program in terms of software, storage, and models. Information will be out in the coming weeks.
